I think it was, the change was probably (too) late into the process of finishing DOS. We saw Azog in Thranduil's kingdom in first trailer for the movie, back then Conan Stevens as Bolg was the torturer of Dol Guldur, and most likely Beorn's nemesis since there was that torture scene we all heard about. For some reason they decided to swap this Bolg with Azog, and make a new CGI Bolg to take Azog's place. Bad decision if you ask me. The only remaining part of that old plan is probably that short scene where we see the old Bolg tossing around Gandalf in his cage before Galadriel shows up in BOFA.

Makes me wonder if they shot any scenes of old Bolg at the Battle of Five Armies...possibly getting killed by Beorn on the battlefield like in the book?

Based on how awkward that scene is edited, I doubt Galadriel was originally meant to kill Bolg. But I think they abandoned that character design before they even shot the bulk of BotFA.

Old bolg was suppose to be Azog at first. And in the chronicles art and design on BOTFA Azog was suppose to be in Dol Guldur and fight Galadriel.

I always thought the original plan was to set up a rivalry between Bolg and Beorn, hence Bolg's bear paw pauldrons. Or maybe that was just an idea they abandoned really early on once they decided that Legolas had to have his own story arc.

Conan Steven was first cast as Azog and from the chronicles art and design Azog and Galadriel was going to have a fight. Then Azog became Bolg and when it became three films keeper of the dungeon.

The strangest part is that they kept the bear claws on the new Bolg design, even though they had completely abandoned that plot line. Other than Beorn mentioning that Azog killed most of his family.

The original concept Beorn killed Bolg...

The idea was that everyone assumed Azog was dead, and some unknown orc is hunting Thorin and co. for unknown reasons. Radagast then goes into Dol Guldur, finds the Morgul Blade and frees Beorn from a cage. Radagast takes the blade to Gandalf. Azog reveals himself (to the company AND the audience) during the tree sequence, the eagles save the day. The confused company meet Beorn. Beorn doesn't trust the dwarves, but when Gandalf mentions Radagast, Beorn agrees to help. Beorn talks about his time in Dol Guldur and about how the Necromancer can raise the dead (hence Azog's resurrection) and how Azog's offspring, Bolg, tortured his kind until he was freed by Radagast. Beorn agrees to help the company, hoping to get revenge on Bolg. The dwarves continue to be chased by Azog. Gandalf goes to Dol Guldur, gets imprisoned and tortured by Bolg and is taunted with a "vision" that shows forces being lead by Bolg and Azog marching to Erebor and fighting with Smaug on their side. Azog loses the dwarves after the barrel sequence and makes for Gundabad. Galadriel arrives at Dol Guldur and fights Bolg. Bolg falls to the floor. Galadriel frees Gandalf, but he is unconscious. They drive Sauron out and Gandalf wakes up. He tells Galadriel about the vision, she looks for Bolg's body but he has gone. Azog attacks Erebor with an army from Gundabad, just as things look like they're going well, Bolg turns up with a surprise army. The eagles then arrive with Beorn, who kills Bolg. Thorin and Azog kill each-other. After Bilbo and Thorin exchange words Beorn (who didn't trust the dwarves) carries Thorin's body from the field, in respect for his slaying Azog.

The old Bolg would have been the way better anthagonist. The design was great and creative. Compared to the design Azog and new Bolg ended up finally, which is really lame to me. Also the idea of Beorn being in Dol Guldur sounds so much better than the plot they followed after that being obviously scrapped. At least to me.

Pretty much anything would be better than the "rivalry" between Legolas and Bolg.
