...though joining in by replying within discussions is of course a vital contribution too.

My sense of this discussion so far (please check for anything I've missed, as I'd like to move on to organizing the read-through soon).

I think I'm getting a pretty clear notion of what folks would like to remain the same, and what to change (see below for what I've understood). So I'm eager now to confirm we've covered the discussion, and to move on shortly to posting regular, sticky sign-up thread, and publicising it as best I can outside the Reading Room. (Help with getting the word out would be very welcome.) I think the mood of the discussion so far is as follows: 1) Keep the system of 1 chapter per week. 2) Use my suggested schedule (as per the Original Post, and also shown below: starts week beginning 13 September, ends week beginning 22 November). 3) When trying to recruit chapter leaders I should: a) Emphasise that the chapter leader has considerable discretion to lead the discussion the way that he/she thinks is best (many Original Posts or one; write a lot or a little). BUT... b) Advise on the length of original posts. I should mention that chapter-leaders who write long Original Posts need to be aware that this will pose a problem for some folks, who are quickly left behind because they don't have time to read such a long starter. I hope this is good news to anyone who would like to lead a chapter, but does not have time to research and write a long Original Post. Possibly the misconception that long Original Posts are required is something that deterred folks from leading chapters in Book II. I noticed that we relied on the efforts of a much smaller pool of chapter leaders than we did in Book I, and that is a concern as we organize further Books. I mean that we might be unable to keep going if we come to rely on a small group of loyal folks who do several chapters each, before becoming exhausted by it. 4) It should remind everyone who would like to participate (as chapter leaders or people who reply) that many kinds of contributions are welcome. Between us Reading Room contributors, we clearly have an extraordinary collection of knowledge, insights and life experience of many kinds. Some folks can contribute lots of 'Tolkien Studies' information (stuff from from other writing by Tolkien or about Tolkien). Some can contribute insights from knowledge of other literature, or literary criticism, or folklore. Others can share knowledge and personal experience of all kinds. I can remember very interesting contributions based on a contributor's knowledge or personal experience of: military service, use of armour or medieval weapons, horse-riding boating, medicine, geology, cartography, mechanics, languages, gardening, and cloth dying (and doubtless many others that I can't remember just now). I do hope these 'expert' contributions will continue. However, everyone, however inexpert they feel, can contribute their own reactions to the chapter, and ask about anything that puzzles them. And such contributions are very welcome too - the more perspectives the better. 5) Since we have been praising the merits of many perspectives, I ought to try to recruit a good range of leaders, especially making efforts to attract folks who have not led many chapters (or who are willing to try leading their first chapter). Obviously there's a limit to what I can do here - it's a volunteer exercise, so I have to rely on people coming forward. I should say that I'm not enthusiastic about leading several un-placeable chapters myself, or in arm-twisting the 'usual suspects' to lead more chapters than they really want. Does that sum things up? If I haven't noticed something important, or if there are folks with things to say who haven't posted please do say. Otherwise, I'd like to move on to organizing Book III on the basis we've been discussing. Lastly, thank you so much to those who have already volunteered. The batting order is currently: week beginning # Chapter # Chapter name # leader 13-Sep-15 # I # The Departure of Boromir # 20-Sep-15 # II # The Riders of Rohan # Brethil 27-Sep-15 # III # The Uruk-hai # 04-Oct-15 # IV # Treebeard # 11-Oct-15 # V # The White Rider # 18-Oct-15 # VI # The King of the Golden Hall # squire 25-Oct-15 # VII # Helm's Deep # 01-Nov-15 # VIII # The Road to Isengard # 08-Nov-15 # IX # Flotsam and Jetsam # 15-Nov-15 # X # The Voice of Saruman # 22-Nov-15 # XI # The Palantir #

I do believe I may take you up on this offer NoWizard. Brethil can tell you that I have some very definite opinions on the Uruk-Hai. I believe they are much under-rated! I will let my thoughts be known during the discussion. If nobody objects, I am happy to take the Treebeard chapter! Please keep in mind however, I do not know the 3rd age of Middle Earth nearly as well as I know the 1st. Hoping to not open mouth and insert foot! I will probably have more questions than answers! Please all new-comers join in...not many know less about the third age of Middle Earth than I do!!! If someone else would prefer this chapter, please step right up! I am happy to tackle what is left over!

I think that, if people worry that they must be experts and don't know absolutely everything about their chapter, we can't do these read throughs for all that long. Personally I think that "knowing enough = having read about & thought about the chapter." When I did Sil. Chapters, I was utterly non expert, but this didn't matter: people replying to my op supplied details that they thought were useful & which I hadn't raised. I don't recall people raising such things with an air of smug surprise or some other way like to make me regret volunteering. If I recall they contributed, as people should, in a helpful way. Looking forward to your thoughts on the Uruks.
