Numenoreans -vs - 2d Century CE Roman Empire. Can't Post

Prof. Tolkien never went into much detail about how the various armies were armed and armored. Rome and Numenoreans seem a pretty tight match and most of it would come down to who was directing the battle on either side.

Some advantages for the Numenoreans [In reply to] Can't Post

Larger body size, more robust health.

Unknowns...tactics, specific weapon / armor, technology comparisons. Sea power specifics unknown.

Yes, leadership is key, but overall, I would give the edge to Numenoreans.

I think all things being equal [In reply to] Can't Post

(defensive gear, offensive weaponry, even equal leadership) and the contest being set in the late Third Age when the average height of a Numenorean was about 6’ 4” or two rangar; and the ancient Romans were on average about 5’ 7”, the 9” difference in height (not to mention a significant weight differential), the Numenoreans would whomp . . .

If it was set in the Second Age when the size of the Numenoreans was even larger than late Third Age then the whomping would be even whompier . . .

(Elendil (the Tall) was said to be almost 2.5 rangar or about 7’ 11”; but he was the tallest of the Numenoreans; but could we not assume the average Second Age Numenorean (male) to be over 7 feet?

This would be Samwise vs Hulk Hogan. . . PiratePirate

Boromir looked in surprise at Bilbo, but the laughter died on his lips when he saw that all the others regarded the old hobbit with grave respect. Only Glσin smiled, but his smile came from old memories.
