I saw Ian Mckellen last night.

I live in Hollywood and saw him outside the Harmony Theater. It turns out he was giving a Q&A after a screening of Sherlock Holmes. There was a crowd of autograph seekers trying to get him to come sign there stuff. As he left the theater with security, the fans all started screaming Ian! instead of coming over, he went into his car and drove away. The fans ran after the car for a block, begging for him to come out and sign their stupid stuff. I was a little disgusted at how pathetic everyone was. I wish I'd gotten more than just a second long glimpse at the man, but at least I can say I saw Gandalf in real life. So that was cool. He looks shorter when he's not in a group of dwarves or hobbits, haha. Wonderful actor. I would have snapped a picture of him, but like I said he went straight into the car. Next time.

I have met him and chatted with him twice. The first time was after a performance of Waiting for Godot. My friend and I hung around in the freezing cold with a few others, and we were well rewarded for our patience. He was so friendly and was particularly kind to a young woman who had made a gorgeous little model Gandalf, which she gifted to him. He made sure she got lots of photos. The performance was at the Theatre Royal, not long before it was smashed to bits by the earthquakes. Later on I went to see his one man show, which travelled around NZ to fundraise for Christchurch and to try to help to rebuild the Theatre Royal. The performance at the Court Theatre was electric. He chatted with the crowd and answered questions, told lots of interesting stories and did some readings and performed some scenes from various Shakespeare works. But the highlight for a lot of us was his reading from Tolkien, and then performing as Gandalf the 'you shall not pass' scene. During the intermission and after the show he mingled with the crowd and I think he spoke to every single person there. He made a point of asking us if our houses were okay and promised us he would raise as much money as he could. His amazing efforts have had a lasting impact, and the Theatre Royal has been restored beyond what anyone could have imagined. I already loved him before the earthquakes, but now I consider him one of our most special Christchurch friends.

Not only your wonderful account of meeting Sir Ian, but also the link to the great website of the Theatre Royal. I must be sure to go there next time we're in CC. I did follow Sir Ian's extensive efforts to support Christchurch after the quakes, and admire him tremendously for that.
