in Isengard: (book)
’So between them our enemies have contrived only to bring Merry and Pippin with marvelous speed, and in the nick of time, to Fangorn . . .’ ‘But the hobbits!’ Legolas broke in. ‘We have come far to seek them, and you seem to know here they are. Where are they now?’ ‘With Treebeard and the Ents,’ said Gandalf.’ -The White Rider And during the finalization of the destruction of Isengard:
’It was getting dark, but I could see the rider’s face clearly: it seemed to shine, and all his clothes were white. . .’ ‘. . . He halted just by us and looked down at us. “Gandalf!” I said at last, . . . Did he say: “Hullo, Pippin! This is a pleasant surprise!? No, indeed! He said: “Get up, you tom-fool of a Took! . . . -Flotsam and Jetsam Boromir looked in surprise at Bilbo, but the laughter died on his lips when he saw that all the others regarded the old hobbit with grave respect. Only Glóin smiled, but his smile came from old memories. -JRR Tolkien

Why Merry and Pippin did not get surprised when they meet Gandalf in Orthanc? We could assume that yes, naturally they were quite surprised, but as Tolkien had already used the “Wow” factor in Fangorn with the Three Hunters (Aragorn, Gimli, & Legolas) he probably felt it unnecessary in their reunion with Merry and Pippin in Isengard. And as Merry and Pippin were talking with Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas who had already been with Gandalf the White for about 5 days, they (Merry & Pippin) skipped right in to the “Get up, you tom-fool of a Took. . .” scenario feeling that their tale of their surprise at the return of Gandalf was just a given to the Three Hunters, and further comment along these lines was unnecessary.
Boromir looked in surprise at Bilbo, but the laughter died on his lips when he saw that all the others regarded the old hobbit with grave respect. Only Glóin smiled, but his smile came from old memories. -JRR Tolkien

When they are tossed down before Gandalf the White you can see a look of utter shock upon their face. It's only a scene that lasts two or three seconds, but it does well enough without revealing who it is, and the implication is obvious Gandalf would have spoken with Merry, Pippin, and Treebeard in short order before setting off again.
