This image from Labyrinth is similar to Elrond and Arwen

Would he have been too campy for the LOTR? He had the "elven look" for sure.

Stars who "almost" were in The LOTR [In reply to] Can't Post

"David Bowie had expressed interest in playing the Elf lord, but Peter Jackson just wasn’t feeling it and thought that the singer’s fame would overshadow the part.

“These are famous, famous characters, loved for nearly 50 years,” Jackson says. “To have a famous, beloved character and a famous star colliding is slightly uncomfortable.” Via EW"

Bowie [In reply to] Can't Post

I see him (back in the day) more as Michael Moorcock's Elric.

Bowie as Elrond [In reply to] Can't Post

I would have been totally on board for that. Bowie has always had a sense of the alien or other about him in his stage personas. I think he would have been a great choice to play an Elf-lord like Elrond or Thranduil.

I don't think he would have been too campy. He can reign his performance in when necessary (he was very understated in The Prestige). The biggest obstacle would be his presence being distracting for the audience. Too many people going "Hey, that's David Bowie," instead of buying him as the character.

that's it [In reply to] Can't Post

he would have "stolen" the show.
PJ needed excellent professionals, suitable faces and body-types, but he wanted people who were not excessively famous themselves.
In this regard, Ian McKellen was incredibly better than Sean Connery, because everybody seeing Gandalf thought about the character, and not about the actor playing him.
With so many roles, and story-lines, this would have been distracting.Crazy
