In 2003 I sent in an essay on how LOTR is the archetypal heroic quest story to TORN's "Greenbooks" section. It was just something I did for fun. I got a "Mithril Award" commendation for it, which was nice. And that was it, I thought. But yesterday I got contacted by a college professor who is putting together a textbook on mythology that includes "modern myths," asking permission to include my essay.
So any of you who want to know how to get published, submit stuff to online venues - you never know who might see it and what might come of it!

Congratulations! I have seen similar advice given to aspiring actors - never turn down an opportunity for good work, even if you don't get paid. You just never know who will see that work one day.
