Wasn't sure which way the court would go on this one but they surprised me a little and I'm glad. I'm very happy for all the people here in my home state who have wanted to get married but weren't allowed. Well done.

Even if this landmark decision does not affect you personally as far as being able to marry the person you love, I think it is still a triumph for everyone. A mentality that accepts people for who they are makes our culture not just more positive but stronger. And the human race needs all the strength and unity it can muster.

And "gay" which he also uses often was "joyful" or "happy".
Different times and meanings change. . .

In relation to the current sense of "gay" by the 1930's, although there isn't any obvious reason to think that Tolkien was alluding to this.

Anything that results in happier relationships for people who love each other can only make the world a better place. In particular though, I'm glad about the rights they'll have *after* they get married in terms of finances, medical care, etc.. A friend's partner has been struggling with medical issues and it's something that causes even more stress for both of them.
