I can't hear any trace of an American accent there. He uses a few American words - "Hi" and "guys" and so on, but the accent sounds - well, like he always sounds. RP with distinct overtones of the Midlands and Yorkshire.

No – no trace of an American accent I can hear, either.

In passing, I do wish this fashion for beards (and stubble) would go away now – just don't know why men like them so much. In RA's case the beard is not too bad (though I think he looks better clean shaven), but I often find finely trimmed beards, with short, well-cut hairstyles, somewhat repulsive. (Not too sure why, because I do like the beard on the character of Thorin, and on rugged men with long hair in general.) IMHO, of course.

Why didn't PJ pick up his own award?

Well, it was because he was in Oxford, visiting Tokien's old college and giving a talk at the magnificent Sheldonian Theatre there. I am just about to put up more info on the OT board.
