@4:20, You can hear the beginning of the Erebor Theme

I'm guessing it was unintentional, but it would be cool if it wasn't!

I don't hear it. [In reply to] Can't Post

It would have to be a coincidence. The "Erebor Theme" did not yet exist and would be based on a piece composed by someone other than Howard Shore.

Where did you get that info? [In reply to] Can't Post

That Shore didn't compose the Erebor theme?

Just curious...as far as I knew he composed everything but the Misty Mountains theme...

It is at 4:20 in "Shelob the Great" [In reply to] Can't Post

From The Hobbit at 2:05 in The Darkest Hour, there are different variations, I just can't find them right now. There is one that ends with the same note, I'll go get it after dinner.

Apart from the fact that it's Thorin's theme, yes! [In reply to] Can't Post

The Erebor theme is the six notes at 3:57 in "The Clouds Burst" Thorin's theme can also be head as the ending section of the Misty Mountains theme in "Over Hill", at 3:16.

Am I thinking of the wrong track? [In reply to] Can't Post

I think I confused the Erebor theme with the instrumental for "Misty Mountains" (based on "Song of the Lonely Mountain" composed by Neil Finn). For some reason I was thinking that they were the same.

Yeah... [In reply to] Can't Post

The Erebor theme is all over the place in the soundtrack, but it's quite a simple 6-note theme, heard at the timestamp I posted above it "the clouds burst" but also when Erebor is first seen in AUJ.

Very good observation but there's more! [In reply to] Can't Post

It seems Gandalf the Gray theme we heard throghout the Hobbit trilogy originates from Return of the King, more precisely Ash and Smoke where can be heard in much more powerful version;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d6DJZBTPQE - Gandalf's theme from the Hobbit could be heard right at the beginning

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tAd0ne7PKI - similar theme though in more energetic version can be heard at 2:56 when Gandalf takes command of Gondorian soldiers.

Thorin's theme is derived from the music when Gandalf sees the map of Erebor in FotR as well // [In reply to] Can't Post

But... if it's Gandalf's theme.... [In reply to] Can't Post

..wouldn't you expect to hear in in the previous films as well? Shouldn't it be there, as it's still him?

There never really was one in LotR... [In reply to] Can't Post

I think the reason Howard Shore gave was that Gandalf wasn't getting involved as much, but was more pulling the strings, whereas he really intervenes in the Hobbit, so they wrote him a theme, I guess based on that bit of music?
