Howard Shore Appreciation (The Hobbit and LOTR)
|

Howard Shore is a great soundtrack writer and he hasn't been getting much recognition these days. So these are my favorite Howard Shore Soundtracks in Category: Epic "Parth Galen" "Misty Mountains" "Sons of Durin" "Last March of the Ents" "The Battle of Pelennor Fields" Emotional "The Eagles" "The Departure of Boromir" "Courage and Wisdom" "Lament for Haldir" "Mithril" "Feast of Starlight" Folkish/Magical "The Passing of the Elves" "Arwen's Song" "Kingsfoil" "Aniron" "Feast of Starlight" "Beyond the Forest" "Dreaming of the Shire" "Concerning Hobbits"

I've been really into the music lately, it's sad there will be no more middle earth scores - but we've got some more music to come with the BOTFA EE! These are my picks (I'll just to the Hobbit soundtracks for now, since I'm most familiar with whats in each track for them): Epic "The Hunters" "Mithril" "Bred for War" "Battle for the Mountain" "Ironfoot" Emotional "Girion, Lord of Dale"/'The Hunters" (House of Durin theme) "Beyond the Forest" "The Darkest Hour" (the emotion is incredible in this one!) "Courage and Wisdom" "The Return Journey" Folkish/Magical "Beyond the Forest" "Thrice Welcome"

of the films is Parth Galen in. I think it's part of the Amon Hen scene.

Add "On the Doorstep" to emotional! Such gorgeous music as they enter Erebor again. Combined with Balin's performance it makes for one of DOS's best scenes.

Its' called The White Tree on the RoTK Theatrical Soundtrack. It's called The Lighting of the Beacons on the RoTK CR I think too. Would anyone happen to know if the heavy violin after the Gollum Scene outside of the Goblin Caves is called, a bit before (or possibly during) Gandalf's count of the dwarves. I also like the one where Elrond decides to reforge Narsil, I believe its' called The Grace of Undomiel

You mean the bit as Bilbo runs out of the Misty Mountains and down after the dwarves, is tracked from the end of "The Hill of Sorcery" at 3:22, with a few instruments removed.

You're referring to the music that also plays when Radagast escapes from Dol Guldur on his sledge. This piece was also used in the film for Bilbo running out of the caves, but it wasn't written for that scene. Listen to "3:22" of The Hill of Sorcery from the AUJ special edition soundtrack. Is this what you're referring to?

the part when they're saying that they were abandoned by the hobbit, and it was somewhat solemn. I was looking for that part to though, thanks!

I think that bit is after when "Gandalf's count of the dwarves". The music your referring to has not yet been released on any soundtracks. We're hoping there will be Complete Recordings for the Hobbit scores so can have these pieces. There is different music on the album for the same scene (presumably an earlier piece of music that was later replaced during rescoring sessions). You can hear it here http://www.jwfan.com/...c=23483&p=935059 at 6:51 of Brass Buttons Test 1 (just scroll down a little bit, it's in the post I linked to), its got some lovely humming!

I'm too lazy to look up all the songs now so I'm likely to forget some Lord of the Rings Forth Eorlings (Epic) Rohan's theme (got that chilling historic feeling to it) Ride of the Rohirrim (and the charge on Pelennor) (Most epic) Evenstar (Magical) Shadowfax (Magical) Gandalf Falls (Tragic) End of All Things (Epic) The Breaking of the Fellowship (my favorite omg) A Journey in the Dark (at least when the music just swells and everything is goosebumps and amazing!) The Black Gate Opens (WOW) There is no soundtrack like this. Never will be. There is so much work and heart put into this I can never express how much I love LotR's soundtracks. It is truly one of a kind. The Hobbit Ironfoot (It's a great shame the bag pipes are not in the movie! It's the best part) Sons of Durin (Epic level so high) Feasts of Starlight (Really beautiful) An Unexpected Party (Quirky) Over Hill (epic) The Hobbit lacked a lot compare to the amount of themes and songs I love in LotR, but I think BotfA got better on that end. In general I love all/most versions of the Durins' theme.

The Return Journey and Mithril. Such a gorgeous little moment at the start of the Mithril song and epic at the end. Also I dont remember if its on the Rotk soundtrack anywhere but that amazing flute playing when Faramir asks Denethor if hed rather have Boromir alive. WOW.

I guess I have something else other than the Battle of the Five Armies Extended Edition to look forward to! By the way, I don't know if you can answer this, but what was the theme in Out of the Frying Pan at 3:30-4:18? I like it, I think it appeared in the AUJ soundtrack a couple of times, but only for a few seconds in the movie.

That section begins with a location-based theme that relates to the trees, then moves into a sort of non-thematic fanfare for the Dwarves. Neither actually reappears in the subsequent scores--though the Pines bit appears a few times in AUJ. Some glorious writing in that sequence! Doug

Now that you called the music a "non-thematic fanfare for the Dwarves", I've just noticed the similarity between its opening phrases and Thorin's theme!

3:42 - sounds like Thorin's figure 3:50 - sounds like the dwarven figure that recurs a lot (four notes that play after the Erebor theme, at the end of some Thorin's theme statements, and near the middle of the DOS intro sequence) Ohh this figure is CBAB, somewhat similar in shape to the Minas Tirith theme CBGA. I love noticing things like this, even if they turn out not to be intended connection!a

This one could listen to "The Lighting of the Beacons" all day, everyday.
"The danger with any movie that does as well as this one does is that the amount of money it's making and the number of awards that it's got becomes almost more important than the movie itself in people's minds. I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that." - Viggo Mortensen
