About Balin as Narrator..?

In reading the Hobbit for the first time, it was a kinda Different Novel when Tolkien Himself?.. stepped into the picture, as if he was There with you... Example: Chapter XII "Inside Information" "..You are familiar with Thorin's style on important occasions, so I will not give you any more of it..." Well, Bomby didn't have an English professor to read this Bedtime story to me in Colorado? but seemed like it, almost 50 years ago. Balin in many ways... sorta of? plays Tolkien in these Movies. In FACT...the First word of dialogue RA says in the ENTIRE Trilogy is, "BALIN, sound the Alarm.!" So therefore Balin is put, pretty much into the center of the Action throughout this wonderful TALE. Another Example: Balin narrates the Battle @ the East gate of Moria like Tolkien might have explained, Thorin's role to his nephews, Bilbo, the rest of the company and US, the Worldwide audience for the first time. As a viewer of these Films..It's Balin!.. who is Bomby's hero! ...just like Tolkien is to many people....

but being a writer I believe all of these characters are pretty much Tolkien. When writing you always need to put a piece of you into your characters, a lot of characters remind me of the descriptions JRR Tolkien in the books/movies. Tom Bombadil, Gandalf, Balin, Theoden, Faramir, Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry. I don't mean that JRR Tolkien is anything like Sauron or Morgoth, but he most likely took his fears and put them into these characters. Having Balin as a Narrator would be really cool, especially if we did his expedition into Moria. I know PJ doesn't want the Middle-Earth Saga to become another overdone Franchise, but maybe a TV show?

Balin isn't made the (or even 'a') narrator.

I think that I see what you're getting at, but you are not expressing it clearly. Even Bilbo is not really the narrator of the story, it is told from the perspective of the modern 'translator' of the tale. However, Bilbo remains the point-of-view character for the reader. The fact that Thorin gives Balin an order in the prologue at Erebor does not make Balin a view-point character. Now we do get to see Balin put in the role of narrator for his flashback to the Battle of Moria. And he does prove to be an effective story-teller. And, as Thorin's right-hand man, he is an important supporting character. But, although Balin also becomes one of Bilbo's best friends within the company, his role doesn't go much beyond that.

In BOT5A, Up near Erebor watching Laketown Burn..? "Poor Souls" by Balin. This is where Ken Stott Shines as Sorta the Conscience & Concierge of the Company. He often is the only one who really has quiet conversations with Bilbo & Us, the audience. Bomby doesn't EXPECT most to agree with him.. but It's worth a try..? Also? There is "No Winning" any argument that bomby is looking for.. just a lazy Summer Sunday morning conversation. among friends

First, I have to remember to keep to the movies, even though you started with an example from the book. Yes, in Balin's flashback we do see him as both a narrator and as a viewpoint character. Not so much, though, through the majority of the films. We do see the camera linger on Balin and his perspective in Erebor, illustrating that even Thorin's followers are worried about him and don't all share his obsession.
