I'm one of those weirdoes who thinks no two people who read the same book actually read the same book (or watches the same film). We each bring something different to the story and so the story expresses itself differently to each person. Call it the observer effect of entertainment, if you like.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. First of all, I was not a fan of the whole idea of trying to tie the Battle of Five Armies into Legolas' later decision to join the Fellowship, so I did not much care whether or not there was some deeper meaning to what Thranduil said to Legolas. Secondly, EVERYONE I saw the film with thought that the Aragorn reference was cheap, thrown in just for the sake of another LotR reference. And I do not boast about any "superior knowledge of the source material", I simply express my displeasure with what I see as Jackson screwing around with the source material when he doesn't have to. If that offends you, well that's too bad. It's the internet, get used to it
