Short soundtrack question Can't Post

Hello Wink

Just listened to the Deluxe Edition of AUJ. The last track, The Edge of the Wild... to what is it belonging /refering to?!

The first minute is Rivendell obviously, but whats the second part which sounds quite dark and mysterious?!

Any help?

It was the High Fells scene, when that was in AUJ... [In reply to] Can't Post

The first part would be the montage of the company travelling from Rivendell, and the second half is the High Fells.

It's not Rivendell [In reply to] Can't Post

The first minute or so was meant to score the great sequence of the company journeying from Rivendell to the Misty Mountains. The theme was clearly Shore's effort at an alternative motif for the company and their journey. That it was meant to feature alongside the more famous 'Misty Mountains' company theme is evident from 'The World is Ahead', where a small portion of this theme plays after the 'Misty Mountains' theme, just as the 'Misty Mountains' theme plays after this other theme in 'Edge of the Wild'. There is also a fairly short stringed version of this theme which can be heard in one of the production diaries (I think), which, it seems, was intended as an alternate for the 'World is Ahead' montage sequence. Ultimately, the theme was not heard in AUJ and was abandoned thereafter, which is a great shame, as its a brilliant composition.

As for the rest of the track, well that was meant to score Gandalf's exploration of the High Fells, as this scene was obviously originally meant to be in AUJ just before the Stone Giants sequence. You'll notice the first part of the DoS track, 'The High Fells' is very similar to the initial moments here. But after that Shore went with something quite different for the revised scene that eventually appeared in DoS.

Well [In reply to] Can't Post

To me it remains that the High Fells should have been left in AUJ, for many reasons.
Same for the score, which sounds more mystic and dark on The Edge of the Wild. Anyone?

Darker, yes. More mystic... maybe not. [In reply to] Can't Post

In my opinion, at least. And yep, I'd love for it to have been in AUJ, but the new theme for the Nine is so nice that it kind of makes up for it Tongue

Edge of the Wild/High Fells [In reply to] Can't Post

NoelGallagher, you're correct with the High Fells spot within the Edge of the Wild track on the AUJ Soundtrack.

It's the section when we see Gandalf walking in a mountain region, presumably Rhudaur, as he is approaching the actual tombs. In the DOS scene the soundtrack continues with the fantastic and haunting 'The Nine' choral theme, as Gandalf and Radagast discuss the empty tombs etc.

It is also heard during the conversation between Gandalf and Beorn before the company departs. They discuss the tombs in the High Fells as The Nine theme plays over Galadriel's voiceover regarding Angmar etc. This is only on the EE dvd of DOS.

The third time you can hear it is during the Dol Goldur battle. Re watch the scene when Sauron reappears. In front of him are the Nine Nazgul or Ringwraiths, accompanied by the theme again. It's brilliant!

I did write a thread about it before but not many people are interested in the Witch-king and the other Nazgul. It's my favourite subject!
