This statement by Thorin is what they wanted to hear. 1. Laketown was a shanty town Refuge from Smaug because of the Water surrounding it... SSOoo..it seems the people of Laketown were interested into re-building Esgaroth, MORE than Laketown. I know that you are not the first person to be confused about this (and certainly won't be the last) but Lake-town and Esgaroth are the same place. If you pay attention to the films you can hear the two names being used interchangeably. I think that part of what confuses folk is that there was the Old Lake-town that is nothing but ruins and the current Lake-town that is destroyed by Smaug. And, in the book there is the New Lake-town built north of the previous site in the time after the Battle of Five Armies.

"During the prestigious days of the Dwarves the larger city of Esgarorth had stood on the same site but it was destroyed (possibly by Smaug) and its rotting pilings could still be seen at low water." pg. 108 "Atlas of MiddleEARTH"..First Edition 1981 LOOK again?...closely since PJ does include some Stone pilings Holding up a "Laketown" House in the Attack, Bomby thinks when Tauriel, is leading the Dwarves & Children into the boat, only about 2 minutes into the Movie. (on the Left in frame). They are the same pieces of Stone Pillars like we saw in the Fog in Bard's Barge. bomby is a Geeky Observer..& often looks for thingies in the Background.

He wishes plants to grow again in the Desolation of Smaug, and so he planted his acorn in Dale maybe for it to remain as a memory of him. Another possibility is that Bilbo now thought Dale and Erebor as his new home/part of his home, or he decided to plant the acorn in Dale because he thought they might not return to the Shire. In any way we will probably see why he planted the acorn in Dale in the Extended Edition of BOTFA

Both the old site and the new site (and the new, new site) were called Esgaroth--and Lake-town. Regardless, the names ARE used interchangeably in the films AND by Tollkien.
