Chatting in Barliman's using mIRC Can't Post

Mibbit makes connecting to chat very easy, and very simple. But, sometimes, it can be rather unreliable.

There are alternatives. For PC users, one of the most popular ones is a standalone chat client called mIRC. Being standalone, mIRC does not work inside you web browser. Instead, you download and install the mIRC software on your computer. Once you've then configured mIRC properly, you can quite easily connect to Barliman's on the TORn chat server.

Once you have mIRC up and running, we think you'll be oh-so-glad you made the effort. It's a very small (especially by modern standards) and very quick download, and installion and set-up is relatively painless.

The entire process may take you 15-20 minutes. Courtesy of chat regular Bokkie, we've put together the following step-by-step list of instructions for installing and configuring mIRC. Of course, if you have troubles, please come to Barliman's via Mibbit and ask for help. We'll try to guide you in.

How to automate logging on with mIRC

Terminology:
* Text inside square brackets (like this: [text]) represents buttons or text in mIRC to notice.
* Text inside the greater and less than symbols (like this: ) represents things you have to choose yourself.

1) Open mIRC
2) Under the menu [Tools] you find [Options]
3) Under the menu [Options] you find [Servers] on the left
4) You'll need to [add] a server
5) The description is free to choose. "The Crazy Bunch" is as valid as "Tolkien Chat".
6) The [irc server] should be set as irc.theonering.net.
7) The rest (port, group and password) can be left as is. click [Add]
8) Under [Options] you should tick [reconnect on disconnect] and [Connect on startup]
9) Untick [show connect on start-up]. This will only present a window to connect. You will not need it.
10) Click [OK] to get out of the options

So far, so good. You will now connect to irc.theonering.net when opening mIRC
If you do not have a registered nick, go to point 18)
If you already have one registered, continue.

11) Under the menu [Options] click the button [Perform] on the right
12) Tick the box [Enable perform on connect] at top of the window
13) Under [perform commands] type the following:
14) /nick
15) /msg NickServ IDENTIFY
16) /join #theonering.net
17) Click [OK] twice, close mIRC and restart.

For those that have not yet registered their nickname, here's how:

18) Open mIRC
19) type /join #theonering.net
20) change to your preferred nickname with /nick
21) type /msg NickServ REGISTER
22) you will get an e-mail with a code. go to to find it.
23) once you have the code, come back to mIRC and type /msg NickServ AUTH
24) Now go back to #11 and follow steps 11 to 17 to get identified as you, and logged into #theonering.net automagically.
