The Arda 300: #'s 140-121 Can't Post

I'll have to make a disclaimer here. The last 2 asterisked characters on this list appear, one in this batch of 20, and one that will appear in the next. I've included all characters appearing since the beginning of the 'Lost Tales' (HoMe1), throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks where. There is no line of canonicity that anyone can apply to say 'this is canon, that is not'. The fact CT & Guy Kay wrote the 1977 Silmarillion, and chose not to include any kind of framework, was their decision, not Tolkien's. Tolkien wrote of Ælfwine of England, and his discourse with such people as Dirhavel and Pengolodh, well after LotR. He was intent on such framework inclusions, and part of my raison d'etre for this list is to see what the legacy of the legendarium, 60-years worth of writing from one man, of a secondary world, provides us. Alwin Arundel Lowdham, for instance, was the highest ranking Notion Club member, at #355. He, like it or not, is crucial to the legendarium because of his 'Report on the Adunaic Language'. Furthermore, Erendis is an asterisked character, not appearing until UT. Indiscriminately casting Erendis aside as a non-canonical anomaly would be ridiculous. Likewise, accepting Erendis into a self-imposed canon, while throwing everything else out with the bathwater, would be equally ridiculous. Finally, we have only the 'Lost Tales', brought to us by Eriol, to tell us of both the Ruin of Doriath and the Fall of Gondolin.

But I digress. We will enter the top-100 soon, which should represent, I hope, most people's ideas of who the most important characters in the legendarium are. Smile

#140 Óin, companion of Thorin Oakenshield – dwarf adventurer
[TG:55,EoA:2,Wik:1,RF:6,JT:22,DD:13,JR:14,LR:1,H6:4,H7:2,H12:2=122pts,45indx.pgs]

All of Thorin’s company are coming in steadily now, each with varying scores, as Fili below will attest. Óin was one of Balin’s companions too, which saw his return to the Misty Mountains…

#139 Fili, companion of Thorin Oakenshield – dwarf adventurer
[TG:73,EoA:1,Wik:3,RF:5,JT:3,DD:14,MD:1,JR:15,LR:1,UT:4,H12:2=122pts,48indx.pgs]
http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Fili
With many other brothers (see below), I slightly rounded some of their scores to align, because they were nearly identical, and the characters essentially belong together. In this case, Fili happens to appear, with dialogue, in UT’s ‘The Quest of Erebor’, unlike Kili (who appeared back at #150). So he gets some added points, despite Jackson’s over-attention on the latter. However, like Kili, he wore a blue hood, accompanied most likely by a blue collar…

#138 & #137 Elladan & Elrohir, twin sons of Elrond Half-elven – peredhil rangers

I classified their occupation as rangers, since those are who they were in the company of, and worked with, most often, at least in LotR. (The titles, not the subjects, of the songs apply…)

Like any player appearing in the Túrin-story since the start, Gwindor earns his place, and then some. He witnessed the gruesome slaying of his brother, initiating the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, in which he was captured, and his followers slain. After he escaped 14yrs in Morgoth’s mines, he became the guard and friend of Túrin after his slaying of Beleg, and aided his admittance into Nargothrond. http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Eriol
This 2nd-last asterisked character has the most indexed pages so far at 150, which includes Garth, Flieger, Honegger, Smol, Rateliff, Carpenter, and of course CT. Not light company when it comes to the legendarium. When I last presented an early draft of this list, I erringly combined Eriol with Ælfwine of England as one character, and he (they) made the top 100. They clearly are not the same character, given all my criteria - separated by 5 centuries, with completely different frameworks - and neither will crack the top-100 here. As such, I parsed the ‘Ælfwine’ entry in Drout between Eriol and Ælfwine of England, who will appear soon, and did so likewise, as best I could, with all HoMe references. Eriol can be most noted for recording the only full tales of the Fall of Nargothrond, and the Ruin of Doriath. When coming upon Tol Eressëa for the first time, he “for many days had wandered its roads… [t]hen thought Eriol… ‘The hour of rest is at hand, and though I know not even the name of this fair-seeming town upon a little hill here I will seek rest…’

His main claim-to-fame, amongst others, was changing Númenórean law, which would see his daughter inherit the sceptre. Looking at HoF [In reply to] Can't Post

I see that Voronwe and others have taken the liberty of adding their own suggestions for songs. Could I do so too?

In Reply To

136 Gildor Inglorion of Rivendell – noldo
His home was Rivendell, although he’s not really a part of any Rivendell episodes during LotR.

Was it? This is a reasonable assumption, although I remember noting to support it.

In Reply To

Amandil, 18th and last Lord of Andúnië – númenórean lord

I love that song! (as you might have guessed)
But I was hoping to meet it later, as the song for Pippin...

In Reply To

Gwindor of Nargothrond – noldo prince

One of my very favourite characters.
But as you've posted my daughter's favourite Zombies' song, I will add my son's. It is also one of mine - and I don't really understand why it wasn't more successful. The lyrics make me think of Finduilas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy6Eg9Rbi8k

In Reply To

*Ottor ‘Eriol the Wanderer’ Wǽfre – anglo-saxon mariner

Yes, I agree the two Ælfwines should be separated. I'm not sure if splitting the points in the essays is a good way - but it is quite impossible to do it otherwise.

In Reply To

Uinen, Lady of the Seas (f) – maia

Well, I won't argue with a Led Zeppelin fan, but are you sure Osse also took the guise of a whale? In Roverandom the whale is called Uin.
I was thinking in the terms of something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJiSmSDo_qs
knowing your preference for live performances.
But I should stop here, before I begin creating an alternative list. I'm not up to it.

In Reply To

Mouth of Sauron, Lieutenant of Barad-dûr – black-númenórean lieutenant/sorcerer

I was wondering it and when this song would appear. Thank you!

In Reply To

Tar-Palantir, 24th King of Númenor – númenórean king

You've promised, and delivered. Thank you again!

In Reply To

Hamfast ‘Gaffer’ Gamgee, gardener of Bag-End – hobbit gardener

As a person of "many words, and few to the point", I might have hoped for a Talk Talk song. Maybe Living in Another World?

But then, Neil Young is truly great, and a fellow Canadian...

In Reply To

Tar-Aldarion ‘The Mariner’, 6th King of Númenor – númenórean king
..
. When Erendis appeared back at #200, I declared her corresponding classic-rock song to be representative of that which she may have ultimately desired, rather than alternatives possibly inspiring a heated gender debate.

Well, I would think the Kinks' Tired of Waiting for You would be appropriate for Erendis... and you might think it was better back then when I was more grateful and less opinionated.

In Reply To

Thrór, grandfather of Thorin Oakenshield – dwarf king

That's a great choice of a song! And it would never occur to me. Thank you!

By the way, the next Beatles' song in this list is one of my least favourites among theirs...

In Reply To

Dwalin, companion of Thorin Oakenshield – dwarf adventurer

So I was thinking, what else would serve?
And I remembered a noteworthy point about Dwalin: according to appendix Aiii, he lived to the age of 340! And must have turned nostalgic when reminiscing about Thorin...
So what about Alan Parsons' Project Old and Wise? (another Colin Blunstone vocal)

In Reply To

Bofur, companion of Thorin Oakenshield – dwarf adventurer

How in middle-earth did he get 25 point from the EoA?

In Reply To
Mîm the Fatherless – petty-dwarf

The singer was an obvious choice - I was made the connection myself! I didn't think of this song.

In Reply To
Irmo Lórien, Olofantur, Master of Dreams – vala master
This lesser of the brothers Fëanturi is the 2nd-last non-Aratar vala that will appear

2nd-last? Ah yes, of course...

Thank you Dan! I hope I'm not abusing the prattling license you gave me too much.

replies as thorough as your detailed response deserves... [In reply to] Can't Post

- Yes, take what liberties you see fit!

- I merged Gildor with the Rush song Rivendell, feeling it the best fit, especially with the movie clips which begin with Frodo & company watching the travelling Elves in the Shire, just as Gildor's Elves were the 1st encountered in the book. Was his permanent residency Rivendell, but not necessarily where he lived & worked?? Well, we currently have the same debate/court-trial going on in Canadian Senate politics, so Rush may have been most appropriate. However, I trust implicitly that Gildor, whatever his permanent residency, was not charging egregious expenditures to the Rivendell taxpayer!

- I thought that song more than perfect for Amandil. And I've a much better one for Pippin!

- My song isn't pinned down for Finduilas yet, though I have a candidate. I'll keep yours in mind.

- Don't mistake Led Zeppelin as being my favourite band just because their songs appear often, and tend to apply (I mean, Khamul & The Battle of Evermore, c'mon!). I'm a fan, but I like The Who, Pink Floyd, and the Beatles more! But its about aligning those songs that regularly make the top of classic-rock countdowns with my objective list of Tolkien characters. I may just give a link to my favourite classic-rock station in Buffalo, as they annually have a Memorial-Day top-500 countdown. Anyway, the rock thing has taken on a life of its own, which is good to see, I guess, as others are digging it elsewhere. Since I'm winging it, and am not keeping track, I'm very curious to see if Zep or the Beatles, or maybe the Stones, end up with the most songs. We'll see...

- Yes, I'm afraid Echo & the Bunnymen, or Depeche Mode, or their ilk, will not be appearing. I've never heard them on any list, and... I've never (really) heard them. Seriously not my cup of tea. I appreciate the Punk era of the 70's, and the Clash have appeared, but the Talking Heads are my limit for what became New Wave. U2 & REM displaced the button-pushing, stylistic-dancing, MTV nonsense of the early-80's, till we got back to some real rock late-80's, early-90's, IMHO. But I digress...

- I'll definitely consider deferring to your Kinks suggestion for Erendis if I go back and alter things on VTF's HOF list (I have a couple I do want to change). Zep's Dazed & Confused, or The Who's My Wife, would have been Aldarion's song, if not for my apprehension.

- And I think it is better now that you are still appreciably grateful while bringing your opinions!

- Having said that, I think Magical Mystery Tour was the perfect choice for Dwalin with his initial meeting with Bilbo. What we think of the song can be downplayed. Many Beatles songs do remain, I'm sure!

- Bofur got 25pts from EoA because the wordcount of that entry was 499. Divided by 20, as set out in my criteria, receives a score of 25.

- Prattle on, sador!!

In the next batch of 20, I have a prime candidate in need of a song for your Alan Parsons suggestion. Also, I believe you recently directed a 'Lily Fairbairn' on a Main thread to my list because of a song she adored. That song will also now appear in the next batch of 20. So thanks, sador!

Lily Fairbairn doesn't need a recommendation; she's an old, well-established poster who surely knows of your list. I've posted the recommendation for the author of the OP, who is apparently new (I don't remember noticing him/her before).
But the song Lily suggested in that thread truly desreves a mention.

Thank you for the long response, too. I'm looking forward to seeing what song you have in mind for Pippin. I guess you will have several good candidates for each of the top members of the list.

I am probably younger than you; I grew up on those songs you seem to dislike, and have a high opinion on some of them. Only in the mid-eighties I became fed up with the curret music, and found a couple of 'oldies' (which meant songs from the 60s and 70s) programs on the local radio (we had at the time only four stations in the country, and only two of them regularly played pop and rock music). Later I had a period of listening mainly to classical music, but in the last few years, with the advent of the Internet (YouTube, and the option of listening to radio stations from all over the world) and working in an environment which allows me to work with earphones - I have returned to the music I've listened to in my late teens, and put the half-remembered snatches of tunes in some sort of order.

But I know, of course, that if I think of 'Gloria' as an alternative song for Gildor - that you would prefer the Them to Patti Smith; and I would definitley not suggest Laura Braningan!

I was only a part-time Deadhead [In reply to] Can't Post

I know people who have seen more than a 1000 dead shows.
One of the best weeks of my life was when I got to see, in addition to three Dead shows, Eric Clapton with special guest Mark Knofler one night, Bob Dylan another night, and Santana touring with his original band (but with the great Alfonso Johnson on bass rather than David Brown) on the final night. That last show was particularly amazing.
