Number Fourteen-ah! Reprise

"Farewell, Master Burglar. Go back to your books... and your armchair... plant your trees, watch them grow. If more people... valued home above gold... this world would be a merrier... place." —Thorin Oakenshield. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) "Farewell good thief,” he said. *** “…If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” —Thorin Oakenshield. J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again It won't be easy, You'll think it strange When I try to explain how I feel, That I’d part now as friends after all that I’ve done. Will you forgive me? All you have seen Is a fool who’s been lost, Too hopelessly out of his mind, Suspicious, and murderous too. Just had to let it happen, Just had to change, Couldn’t stay all my life free from greed, Looking onto that treasure Gleaming bright like a sun. All for a kingdom, Searching around, blaming friends who were true. 'Twas nothing impressive at all, I'd never intended to do. Don’t cry, our Number Fourteen-ah! The truth is, dear Master Burglar, You’ve earned your armchair, Your books, your garden. You’ve kept your promise; Now grant your pardon. And as for fortune that you’d disclaim, Its spell never swallowed you in; To help win back my home- land was all you desired. From this adventure, Go back to Bag End. Sure- ly if more preferred valuing home over gold, This would be a merrier world. Don’t cry, our Number Fourteen-ah! Don’t cry, our Number Fourteen-ah! The truth is, dear Master Burglar, You’ve earned your armchair, Your books, your garden. You’ve kept your promise; Now grant your pardon. Have I said too much? There is no time for more words I could say to you, Now all you have to do Is give me leave to go And watch your tree grow too. *** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0d01NpclvlE The “original” posted on Dec 27 2012, 1:00am is reposted in the sig below.
*** It won't be easy, You'll think it strange, When I try to explain how I feel, Why I'm still here with you After how far we've come. I don't belong here, All you have seen is a Hobbit who's lost, Although he's made it this side Of these Misty Mountains with you. I had to let it happen, I had to change, Though I'd stay all my life with my books, And my garden, my armchair Back at home at Bag End. You lost your kingdom, Journeying yon trying to win it back, It hadn't impressed me at all, Or never expected it to. Don't doubt your Number Fourteen-ah! The truth is, I never left you. Since our wild party So unexpected, I've kept my promise, Don't keep your distance. And was it fortunate that you came? I never invited you in, But to brave the wild world, you awoke my desire. I am no hero, I'm not without fear of The dangers at hand. You ask me why have I kept on? To help win your home if I can. Don't fret for Number Fourteen-ah! Won't lose your Number Fourteen-ah! The truth is, I never left you. I've missed my comfort, My safe existence, I've kept my promise, Don't keep your distance. Have you doubted much? I would not blame, I would have myself doubted too. But all you have to do Is look at me to know That every word is true. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0d01NpclvlE http://newboards.theonering.net/...ed%20journey;#550408

Thank you for the kind compliment, Greenwood Hobbit! Glad you enjoyed them both. I thought I'd try to do a musical-theatre-style reprise for this, since I hadn't done any lyrics about Thorin's last words yet.

Thank you Blackfox! very kind of you to say so. i couldn't help noticing that i was unable to replicate Tim Rice's rhyme scheme 100%, esp in my "original" version I kept missing rhymes all over the place, lol!
