How to write in Tengwar
|
Can't Post
|

Does anyone know of good resources for learning to write in the Tengwar script? The characters are given in the appendices of ROTK, but it doesn't seem to provide much on how to actually use it (or at least it's really confusing). I've come across different websites that all seem to say different things so I'm not really sure what's correct. For example, the characters seem like they are supposed to convey certain sounds or ideas, but one site I found assigns English letters to the characters. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated!

http://www.starchamber.com/paracelsus/elvish/elvish-in-ten-minutes.html Works for writing your name, I'm guessing it works for writing other words, although I'm not sure.

Since you already know some of the characters, try copying down some of the script on the title pages of the books (like at the beginning of LotR and the HoMe books) and translating the characters into recognizable words. That way, you learn from how Tolkien (or Christopher Tolkien) used the script, and get some practice in switching between the two. It's surprisingly simple to figure out how to write English words and Tolkien names by looking at the Tengwar words and deciphering what they mean. It takes a while at first, but is rewarding. This way isn't perfect, and C. Tolkien makes some changes from the original characters (for example, he switches the marks for "i" and "e"), but it's a good way to start, and you don't have to worry about learning from a website that could be incorrect.

I recommend this site... along with the books and looking at Tolkien's own examples (especially in The Road Goes Ever On songbook) http://at.mansbjorkman.net/ It looks nice too!

http://greenbooks.theonering.net/...an/files/020201.html Note that the Tengwar are merely a set of letters. How you use them depends on the language you are writing with them. For example, the Roman letter 'J' - is it pronounced as in English? Or like Y as in German (Johann)? Or like H as in Spanish (La Jolla)?
