The use of obscenities is a subject most parents address with their children. Now that my daughter is in middle school, I doubt there's a swear word she hasn't learned as many of her callow classmates enjoy spewing obscenities as often and as loudly as they can get away with it. My position is that swearing is not necessarily wrong as using obscenities under trying circumstances has been proven to help relieve stress. (Of course, if swearing is a habit then probably not so much. ) However, it takes an adult to discriminate when and with whom it is forgiveable to indulge in some Black Speech so for now she is permitted to think but not utter it. Are Mr. Elf and I prudes? What is your attitude towards swearing?

Often if something falls on my foot... Or as happens a lot lately I trip and fall on or over something unyielding, like an umbrella stand or a shovel I forgot about. Also in traffic. I am not an aggressive driver but yes, sometimes I rant to myself a bit. And maybe at work, if something badly makes no sense. I was orienting a new critical care nurse who was already a friend. In her lovely Caribbean-accented tones she often chided me for my 'sailor mouth'. One day when she was just off orientation I heard some very Piratey comments from her (specifically in defense of patient safety) and thought proudly, ah - she's finally fully fledged.

But as a result of the unyielding tyranny of TORn moderators I'm forced to use alternative language so I'm obliged to expand my vocabulary and seem a much smarter person than I am. Little by little they're turning me articulate and polysyllabic!! Diabolical!!!

so I don't always watch my language. I tend to swear mostly at 1. things I stub my toe on; 2. the computer or another machine that is not doing what I want; and 3. other drivers. But I don't actually like swearing, so I've learned insults in other languages that I mutter at drivers. Not that they can hear me anyway, but it seems less crass.

Regular use of f-bombs and other expletives cheapens them. If you use Bad Words in regular conversation, where can you go when you are really, really upset? I keep the serious ammunition for moments of major outrage!

But it's really a tad more than that. But I always apologize "Sorry Lord" It's like when I kill a spider or a fly (Hmm, Flies and Spiders) I always say "Sorry fly" or "Sorry spider" Kinda feel like it maybe gets me some grace? Ha But we hates them, oh yes we does!!

by using words that you lot think are innocent, but I know are very naughty. I don't know if you have that option, but I am rooting for you. using invisible text. You can root all you like then. The mods can't check every post, right? It's also a lot easier making invisible text, than it is to insert a footer. Promise. Hiding text is so efficient that I can't find a recent post I used it in another reply to you.

the key point you make is to know when and where it's appropriate.. and it definitely is when there's someone making a left turn from the right lane while talking on their cell phone and totally ignoring the other six lanes of traffic.....

Sometimes swearing is like spice; it adds some flavor but you don't want to overuse it. Like Owen Newitt on Vicar of Dibley says when defending his use of a word that starts with b and ends with y, "b#@@&y's not swearing, it's a useful adjective." But often it's just crude and reflects the speaker's lack of imagination. So I'm not so much morally opposed to swearing as stylistically opposed. But, yes, I've been known to let the occassional expletive fly.

I have a feeling you make high art of swearing. I avoid too much because I'm a hack. Just spluttering, "You...blanking...so-and-so!"
