Andrew, like so many others on these productions, felt so much like family. We got to see him struggle and succeed, feel joy and frustration - so forth and so on - through the magnificent Appendices on the DVDs and Blu-rays, as well as from red carpet interviews, tv specials, you name it. And we got to be there with him in the moment that he won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in early 2002. These films have not been common. We have grown attached to these wonderful human beings - and Andrew was one of the brightest spots of this cinematic journey that we've all shared. This HURTS. So much... Rest in peace, you brilliant...kind...wonderful man. Thank you for all that you gave. *goes back to sobbing uncontrollably*
"The danger with any movie that does as well as this one does is that the amount of money it's making and the number of awards that it's got becomes almost more important than the movie itself in people's minds. I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that." - Viggo Mortensen

What! No! Now Andrew! I always enjoyed watching the EEs because he was so cheerful and seemed like such a lovely guy. R.I.P the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it... GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.

Because of the behind-the-scenes DVD extras we've been able to get to know a lot of the crew on these films, and Andrew was one who stood out for his friendliness and enthusiasm. RIP.

The cinematography on his films is some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. The world has lost a great artist.

Agree with many of the other posts that the DVD extras have given us a chance to know him. He was so very interesting in those. Quite a sense of humor and so passionate and knowledgeable. Prayers out to his family and friends. A huge loss for the film industry and the Tolkien fan base. Rest in peace.

As Aragorn said we've all grown to feel like we know these people a little. They're not the typical entertainment folks because I really don't think they were. The Middle-earth family took a hit today and that is quite the sad thing.

I saw this on Reddit moments ago and immediately came here. Very sad to hear that Andrew Lesnie has passed away. He was an incredibly talented cinematographer and did such a great job bringing Middle-Earth to life through his camera. The rolling green pastures of the Shire, the dark and brooding caverns of Moria, the breathtaking vistas of Gondor and Rohan...we have Andrew Lesnie to thank for making them look so great. But more than just the large scale landscapes, he was also a master of smaller scale cinematography. Picture the candlelit interiors of Bag End, the beautifully moonlight love scene with Arwen and Aragorn in Rivendell, the way he lit the actors' eyes in extreme closeups. One of my personal favorite scenes in terms of cinematography is when Theoden is suiting up for battle in Helm's Deep. The way the light shoots through the windows and doorways, coupled with the slow camera craning was just amazing. Thanks Andrew for all the amazing images you helped bring to life!
