** FD: "Who said that?" Can't Post

How well do you know the books and films? Let's see if you can tell where lines in the films are (nearly) straight from the books.

The game is to check out the lines listed below and tell who said it in the film and who said it in the book (i.e. Book: Gandalf - Film: Bilbo). Extra credit if you can tell more about each… like which film or which book or what was going on, etc.

Philippa and Fran used some of these verbatim; or switched some words around; or slightly adjusted some phrases... but each are unmistakably from book-to-film inspired.

I'll post the answers in a day or so. Good Luck!! :)

LOTR: FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING

1. You have a stout heart

2. a) The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak friend, and enter
2. b) If you are a friend, you speak the password, and the doors will open

LOTR: TWO TOWERS

4. This is the hour when we draw swords together

Come sit at the table, come taste the grace

Earth has no sorrow, that Heaven can't cure.

So lay down your burdens, lay down your shame
All who are broken, lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home, you're not too far
So lay down your hurt, lay down your heart
Come as you are.

Just in case you'd like to see more of where these came from... here ya go! Thanks for playing!!

LOTR: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING

1. Movie: Strider [FotR at the Prancing Pony before the Nazgul attack]
"'You have a stout heart, little hobbit, but that will not save you. You can no longer wait for the wizard, Frodo. They are coming.'"

1. Book: Strider [FotR: Strider - At the Prancing Pony before the Nazgul attack]
"'It seemed to make off up the Road, eastward,' continued Merry. 'I tried to follow... ...it vanished almost at once; but I went round the corner and on as far as the last house on the Road.'
Strider looked at Merry with wonder. 'You have a stout heart,' he said; 'but it was foolish.'"

2. Movie: Gandalf [FotR at the Gates of Moria]
"'It reads, The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak friend, and enter.
Merry: 'What do you suppose that means?'
Gandalf: 'Oh, it's quite simple! If you are a friend, you speak the password, and the doors will open.'"

2. Book: a) Gandalf then b) Gimli [FotR: A Journey In the Dark]
"'The words are in the elven-tongue of the West of Middle-earth in the Elder Days,' answered Gandalf. 'But they do not say anything of importance to us. They say only: The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter...'
'What does it mean by speak, friend, and enter?' asked Merry.
'That is plain enough,' said Gimli. 'If you are a friend, speak the password, and the doors will open.'"

3. Movie: Celeborn [FotR in Lothlorien speaking to Aragorn]
"'Mordor Orcs now patrol the eastern shore of the Anduin... ...Strange creatures bearing the White Hand have been seen on our borders. Seldom do the orcs journey in the open sun, yet these have done so.'"

3. Book: Legolas [TT: Riders of Rohan]
"'Seldom will Orcs journey in the open under the sun, yet these have done so,' said Legolas. 'Certainly they will not rest by night.'"

LOTR: TWO TOWERS

4. Book: Aragorn [TT: Helm's Deep]
"Éomer and Aragorn stood together on the Deeping Wall. They heard the roar of voices and the thudding of the rams; and then in a sudden flash of light they beheld the peril of the gates.
'Come!' said Aragorn. 'This is the hour when we draw swords together!'"

5. Movie: a) Gimli then b) Legolas [TT in the armory of Helm's Deep]
Aragorn: Farmers, farriers, stable boys. These are no soldiers.
Gimli: Most have seen too many winters.
Legolas: Or too few. Look at them. They’re frightened. I can see it in their eyes."

5. Book: Gamling [TT: Helm's Deep]
"'Maybe, we have a thousand fit to fight on foot,' said Gamling, an old man, the leader of those that watched the Dike. 'But most of them have seen too many winters, as I have, or too few, as my son's son here."

6. Movie: Eowyn [TT in Meduseld]
"'They had no warning. They were unarmed. Now the wildmen are moving through the Westfold, burning as they go. Rick, cot, and tree.'"

6. Book: Theoden [TT: Helm's Deep]

7. Book: Theoden [RotK: The Muster of Rohan]
"On the threshold sat an old man, aged beyond guess of years; tall and kingly he had been, but now he was withered as an old stone... ...then a voice came out of him, as it were out of the ground, and to their amaze it spoke in the western tongue: 'The way is shut.'
'Then they halted and looked at him and saw that he lived still; but he did not look at them. "The way is shut, his voice said again. It was made by those who are Dead, and the Dead keep it, until the time comes. The way is shut.'"

8. Movie: Aragorn [RotK at Minas Tirith plotting strategy against Sauron]
"'Not for ourselves, but we can give Frodo his chance if we keep Sauron's Eye fixed upon us. Keep him blind to all else that moves.'"

8. Book: Gandalf [RotK: The Last Debate talking about Sauron]
"'His doubt will be growing, even as we speak here. His Eye is now straining towards us, blind almost to all else that is moving.'"

HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

10. Movie: Radagast [AUJ outside the Trolls' cave]
[Radagast rides up at full speed through the forest on his rabbit-drawn sled]

Radagast: “I was looking for you, Gandalf! Something’s wrong! Something’s terribly wrong!”

10. Book: Smaug [Hobbit: Inside Information]
"He had never felt quite happy about it [that little hole], though it was so small, and now he glared at it in suspicion and wondered why he had never blocked it up… …He stirred and stretched forth his neck to sniff. Then he missed the cup!
Thieves! Fire! Murder! Such a thing had not happened since first he came to the Mountain!"

11. Movie: Thorin [AUJ on the Goblins' front doorstep]
“Search to the back; caves in mountains are seldom unoccupied.”

11. Book: Gandalf/Narrator [Hobbit: Over Hill and Under Hill]
"Have you thoroughly explored it?" said the wizard, who knew that caves up in the mountains were seldom un-occupied.
"Yes, yes!" they said, though everybody knew they could not have been long about it; they had come back too quick. "It isn't all that big, and it does not go far back."

12. Movie: Balin [TT on the Mountains leading to Goblin-town]
"This is no thunderstorm; it’s a thunder-battle! Look!”

12. Book: Narrator/Bilbo [Hobbit: Over Hill and Under Hill]

HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG

13. Movie: Gandalf [DOS at the House of Beorn talking to the Dwarves]
Dori: “Come away from there! It’s not natural, none of it. It’s obvious: he’s under some dark spell.”
Gandalf: "Don’t be a fool; he’s under no enchantment but his own. Alright now, get some sleep, all of you. You’ll be safe here tonight.”

13. Book: Gandalf [Hobbit: Queer Lodgings]
"The Somebody I spoke of--a very great person. You must all be very polite when I introduce you... ...He is not the sort of person to ask questions of.
"At any rate he is under no enchantment but his own."

14. Movie: Beorn [DOS At the House of Beorn]
“Safe? The Wood-Elves of Mirkwood are not like their kin. They’re less wise and more dangerous. But it matters not.”

14. Book: Narrator/Bilbo [Hobbit: Flies and Spiders]
"The feasting people were Wood-elves, of course. These are not wicked folk. If they have a fault it is distrust of strangers. Though their magic was strong, even in those days they were wary. They differed from the High Elves of the West, and were more dangerous and less wise."

HOBBIT: BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES

15. Movie: Bilbo [BotFA On the outlook of Erebor]
[The sound of Smaug hitting the ground echoes throughout the land, all the way to the dwarves on the mountain. They jump up in surprise.]
Oin: “What was that? What happened?”
Bilbo: “It fell. I saw it.”
Bilbo: “It’s dead. Smaug is dead!”

15. Book: Roäc son of Carc [Hobbit: The Gathering of the Clouds]
“Behold! the birds are gathering back again to the Mountain and to Dale from South and East and West, for word has gone out that Smaug is dead!"

16. Movie: Thranduil [In the encampment at Dale]
Bilbo: “I came...to give you this.” [He unwraps the package to reveal the Arkenstone]
Thranduil: “The Heart of the Mountain! The King’s Jewel.”
Bard: “And worth a king’s ransom. How is this yours to give?”

16. Book: Bilbo [Hobbit: A Thief in the Night]
""This is the Arkenstone of Thrain," said Bilbo, "the Heart of the Mountain; and it is also the heart of Thorin... ...Then Bilbo… …handed the marvellous stone to Bard, and he held it in his hand, as though dazed.
"But how is it yours to give?" he asked at last with an effort."

17. Movie: Bard [BotFA at the Gate of Erebor]
“Why does the king under the mountain fence himself in? Like a robber in his hold.”

17. Book: Bard [Hobbit: The Gathering of the Clouds]
"A tall man stood forward, dark of hair and grim of face, and he cried: "Hail Thorin! Why do you fence yourself like a robber in his hold?"

18. Movie: Kili [BotFA At the Gate of Erebor]
Kili: “They have the Arkenstone? Thieves! How came you by the heirloom of our house? That stone belongs to the king!”
Bard: “And the king may have it --and our good will.”

18. Book: Thorin [Hobbit: The Clouds Burst]
"Then Thorin was stricken dumb with amazement and confusion… "...That stone was my father's, and is mine," he said. "Why should I purchase my own?" But wonder overcame him and he added: "But how came you by the heirloom of my house—if there is need to ask such a question of thieves?"
"We are not thieves," Bard answered. "Your own we will give back in return for our own."

Great game! [In reply to] Can't Post

I could get most of EITHER the movie OR the book quotes, but I almost never realized it was both. I guess my memory just can't hold that much info!

OK, I'll try *promises not to peek*.... [In reply to] Can't Post

(You''ll know I didn't when I get them all wrong!)

LOTR
1. Aragorn says it in the book, in Bree, when Merry comes back after following the Rider. But I'm thinking Aragorn must say it in the film too, because I can hear Viggo Mortensen's voice in my head - maybe also in Bree but to Sam, when Sam tries to defend Frodo

2. In the book I think a) is Gandalf and b) Gimli, which is repeated by Merry: not sure about the film, maybe a) Gandalf b) Gandalf, with 'Speak friend and enter' repeated by Frodo

3. In the film it's Celeborn. Not sure about he book - maybe Aragorn?

TT
4. I don't know - at a guess either Aragorn or Eomer

5. In the film I think a) is Gimli and b) Legolas (or maybe the other way round): book, I'm not sure

6. Film Eowyn: book I think Erkenbrand or Theoden, or one of Theoden's men - I'm sure it's a man who says it

ROTK
7. King of the Dead in the film, but in the book the words were said by an old man the Rohirrim found when they first took over the country - I don't think he had a name.

8. Aragorn in the film, talking about drawing Sauron's attention to the gate. I think it may be Gandalf in the book.

9. Gandalf says it in the book sometime after Pelennor Fields - and in the film I think it's Galadriel, at the Grey Havens

AUJ
10. Don't remember it in the film - in the book I think it's Smaug

11. Thorin in the film, and isn't it the narrator in the book?

12. It's Bofur in the film, but again, I though it was the narrator in the book

DOS
13. I think that's Gandalf in film and book, taking about Beorn - but in the film he's talking to Dori and in the book maybe Bilbo?

14. Beorn says it of the Mirkwood elves in the film; it's aslo said of them in the book, but I think it may be Gandalf who says it

BOTFA
15. The birds take the news in the book - in the film it's Bilbo

16. Bilbo in the book and - I think - Thranduil in the film, when Bilbo appears with the Arkenstone in the camp

17. I think it's Bard both times - when he tries to reason with Thorin at the gate of Erebor

18. Thorin in the book and - I think - Kili in the film - when the Elvenking and Bard turn up with the Arkenstone

Phew - think I'll go and make some flapjack and a cup of tea now - anyone want some?
