I suspect this is quite revealing [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Gollum's Song
2. Into the West
Gap
3. I See Fire
4. The Last Goodbye
5. Song of the Lonely Mountain
6. May it be.

This would follow my film rankings oddly enough - with the exception of Enya's deeply pedestrian effort (in my view).

Although honestly, there's probably a tie between place 2-4. And I don't really dislike May it Be, I just like the others more. I do dislike Gollum's Song, though.

I like all of them, Gollum's Song is really good even though its last, but all the Middle-Earth songs are really good, and I think its fortunate we don't get the stereotypical music we get with every other movie. I do really like Into the West, but I like The Last Goodbye more, I guess because its really the end of the whole movies. Also because its the end of Bilbo's times with the Dwarves, and it feels like he's singing it. Into the West feels so right for the movie too though, I really liked how the theme was in the movie itself.

The Last Goodbye
Into the West
I See Fire
May it Be
Song of the Lonely Mountain
Gollum's Song

First two are a toss up for me. [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Into the West. Perfect way to end the series.
2. May It Be. Enya is a real life Tolkien Elf. Her voice fit Jackson's beautiful
world better than any other singer IMO
3. The Last Goodbye. Trying to hard to be Into the West and nowhere near as
good. Still the most Middle-Earth-y of all 3 Hobbit songs
4. I See Fire. A poppy tune more appropriate for a modern YA adaptation, but
still a good song.
5. Gollum's song. Shrill vocals but good music.

6. Song of the Lonely Mountain. A joke of a song more suited to Lemmywink's
fantasy adventures in South Park than an epic. Cheesy vocals, cheap
sounding production and lyrics that took the best part lines from the
Dwarven tune and spoiled them with a bunch of surface-level, "describe the
plot of the movie" lyrics.

"There are no safe paths in this part of the world. Remember you are over the Edge of the Wild, and in for all sorts of fun wherever you go."

Not a great field to choose from for me... [In reply to] Can't Post

Gollum's Song

May it Be

Into the West

The Hobbit ones

Emiliana Torrini is an artist whose music I'd actually listen to. I like Gollum's Song and enjoy it's segue into the Rohan theme. May it be is alright and fits well enough with the movie, although not really my kind of thing.

Into the West is bearable.

I find all the Hobbit ones execrable. Seriously poor. Slightly tonally jarring too in their obvious modernity (like a Goblin King playing air electric guitar).Probably the ubiquitous Mr.Sheeran's warble is my least favourite of all, but it's a tough competition.

I would have used something less banal (from my perspective) as a general rule than the artists were chosen. On the Rings movies they were trying to be sort of ethereal and beautiful. This sort of worked with Enya and Torrini, but not so much with Lennox. Would have loved it if they could have coaxed a song out of Elizabeth Fraser given they got her on vocal duty in other elements of the soundtrack. Dead Can Dance perhaps?

With the Hobbit, this was abandoned. Didn't work for me, although had no great bearing on my enjoyment of the movies save to add to the collection of many small, and often subtle, changes in tone and decision making from the LOTR trilogy that leaving me considering the Hobbit movies to be very good but not great like the LOTR.

This is tough... [In reply to] Can't Post

but I'll give it a shot (but I'll list the songs from the two trilogies separately, since it's too hard to list them all together):

The Hobbit:

I See Fire (I love this song, probably because it's all about Thorin)Wink
The Song of the Lonely Mountain
The Last Goodbye (it didn't make me cry, but it is a little sad)

LotR:

Into the West (this song does make me cry, probably because of who is was originally written for)Unsure
Gollum's song (also, a little melancholy, but it doesn't make me cry)
May It Be (I never cared for this song)

It seems I like the credit songs in the order I prefer the movies for the Hobbit trilogy, but not so much with LotR (since the order I prefer the movies in are reversed for TT and RotK, not so much with the songs).Smile

My answers [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Song of the Lonely Mountain / Into the West - Into the West would take the lead, but I find the singers' voice a bit too brash occasionally. Still makes me cry though! I love Song of the Lonely Mountain because it uses a theme I already love from the film. Plus I like the metallic sounding percussion and background vocals (really reminds me of the dwarves).
2. May It Be - I liked Enya before seeing LotR and she didn't disappoint me here!
3. The Last Goodbye - Billy Boyd has a lovely voice and it's a touching farewell song.
4. Gollum's Song - A very different song but it really is creepy and atmospheric and that's what gave it the edge over number 5.
5. I See Fire - Didn't really like it when I first heard it (sounded too modern) but it really has grown on me over time. I actually like it now, just not enough to put it above other songs.

1. The Last Goodbye
(A wee bit boring the first time I heard it, but then it obviously grew on me. I think the lyrics are beautiful and Billy's voice just... angel. Now I just think the song is so beautiful. So sad.)

2. Into the West
(it's a favorite too though it's a bit too quiet so it's hard to hear it sometimes. Then it gets too loud near the end so it's all over the place really.)

3. Song of the Lonely Mountain
(Very fitting song for the movie. Love the mood of the song.)

4. May it Be
(The most 'magical' one if you'd ask me)

5. Gollum's Song
(Odd song, but I do like the strange-ish voice. Just not a fave.)

6. I See Fire
(nice lyrics ruined by an awful song.)

I like “Gollum’s Song” and “I See Fire”, but I’m judging the songs by how they make me feel. The last two don’t move me as much or give me as many warm and fuzzy feelings as the others do.

I have to say I like all of them but I do have a definite order of preference:

1. Into the West
2. Song of the Lonely Mountain
3. The Last Goodbye
4. May It Be (we had this played at my father-in-law's funeral and it was very hard to hold it together during the song).
5. Gollum's Song

6. I See Fire

Gollum's Song was after "The Two Towers" by a lady named Emiliana Torrini. I am sure it's on youtube.

So you've never watched the credits for RotK or BotFA? That's a shame because both of the songs are great, and there are sketches of all the main cast.
