I sit beside the drawer and think

of flowery pants and frilly pants
in summers that have been...
Of school knickers and thermal pants
in autumns that there were..
with morning mist and pouring rain
and hockey sticks to bear....
I sit beside the fire and think
of how the world will be
when people all stop wearing pants
that go down to the knee...
For still there are so many pants
that I have never seen
on washing lines and store displays
in shades of blue and green...
I sit beside the fire and think
of knickers long ago,
and pant-wearers who'll see a world
that I shall never know.
but all the while I think of pants
that I have worn before
I listen out for nice new pants
delivered to my door.
