Why people don't like The Great Goblin?

I have an impression that most of the people didn't like Goblin King in the movie, and wonder why is that the case? I personally think he was good. Granted, they could have done without the "That'll do it" line, but overall I think it was not as bad as people reacted when AUJ came out.

For the most part, I was ok with him but I did not like his tree stump feet.

There are more issues with the whole Goblin Town scenes than the Great Goblin. Barry Humphreys did as he was asked and it was PJ who made him a little less dark and a little more comical. But, AUJ was trying to keep the lightness of the book before getting dark, so it was a balancing act.

I thought he was great. Some of the comedy went a little too far, but I still really enjoy all of his scenes. And I'm glad we got more of him in the EE.

He's a goblin! I think he was well done and very close to the Great Goblin in the book. I wouldn't invite him round for tea, though...

But I thought the full version of his song in the EE was fantastic (and strangely catchy). I loved the goblin "rock band". It was a bit cartoonish, which fit the tone of the first movie. People still had their expectations from the much grittier LOTR, so I get how something like the Goblin King could be jarring. I thought it was a totally fair interpretation of the book character. But if you want a short explanation, I'd look no further than How It Should Have Ended's name for his certain facial appendage.

Humphries' Goblin King seemed a bit too anachronistic to me, a bit too modern (sort of like King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar). But that did not bother me overmuch.

For me too - the performance was anachronistic

I like him so much that I wish like hell that they would have used the extended parts in the theatrical version. We needed more Goblin, and less gravity defying stunts if you ask me.

...were what I disliked about that scene. Too much of a cliché, too long. That bit was essentially a replay of the entrance into Moria in FotR and the race to the Bridge of Khazad Dum: same narrow ledges, rickety bridges, no handrails, scare the acrophobes. Nothing original. Goblin King himself was ok.

IMO superb CGI, repulsive, cunning, ruthless, slimy - good stuff. "But I'm forgetting - you don't have a mountain. And you're not a king. So that makes you - nobody really."

1. The TrollShaws episode had Villains about 10 feet TALL. 2. The GoblinKing is about 14 feet Tall & has maybe? about 500 minions..who do his dirty work. 3. SSOoo.. the THREAT to their Mission is Highly Ramped up! 4. In both cases, Gandalf is absent, SSOoo they once again on their own. BUT, his ARRIVAL also RAMPED up his REPUTATION with Dwarves {Bilbo was absent & knew nothing of this} 5. ONLY Gandalf could Kill him. {Which is Canon} & ONLY he has the Power to over-Power him. SSOoo..bom is VERY Happy with Barry's Role. You must also remember that PJ cast some of his Favorite Actors. Stephen Frye, Sylvester McCoy { A Doctor Who?} & Barry Humphries. Also, each of them!.. JUMPED @ the opportunity to be in A MAJOR Movie of this TYPE.

As good as they come, for a goblin

I would not say I like like him, but he was impressively repugnant - a neckless, bug-eyed, crowned pile of warts, goiter and lard. Which is quite lively characterization/visualization since in the book (I think, not sure?) it was only mentioned that he was BIG. All his singing bothered me the first few times I saw the film, it felt like a clumsy pause in the action and the characters' interactions, but I've gotten used to it. "Mutations, deviations" (or the other way 'round) and "That'll do it" also took some time to go by smoothly. Judging by his size relative to the other goblins it seems like the biggest one will be king, so after his demise the next huge in line may have been crowned.
