What a fantastic story! [In reply to] Can't Post

Keep digging and digging, and he's in another millennia. :)

I remember being in Ireland in The Burren, where the tombs date back to the last Cleopatra, and I suddenly felt time as a tangible thing reaching far into the past. It blew me away, coming as I do from a country that's younger than many *buildings* in Ireland.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

That sewage pipe [In reply to] Can't Post

must have been a heck of a long way down!! What a fascinating article. (The write-up, I mean, not the sewage pipe...!) I know that in Chester, not far from where I live, there are Roman features in some of the cellars of the city centre shops, and if any redevelopment is done archaeology plays a big part in it. They have two thirds of an amphitheatre there; the other third is underneath a convent which shows no sign of collapsing, so goodness knows if Chester will ever have a complete amphitheatre on display!

Fascinating!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

And I sympathize: an obsession indeed. I would be unable to walk away from it and would wonder every day what else could be found. In older countries, what lies beneath people's feet boggles the imagination.

Thanks Mayor! Fun read!

(Hmm...wonder what we would excavate under Tolkienia...)
