What do you think was the most decisive small scale battle? (Including LOTR) Can't Post

What battle do you think had the most at stake and had quite a large outcome (possibly effecting wider Middle Earth)?

An example of what I mean by small scale would be:

Aragorn vs Sauron (Palantir)
Saruman vs Gandalf (In Orthanc)
Saruman vs Gandalf (Caradhras)
Sam(and Frodo) vs Shelob
The White Council vs Sauron and the Nazgul
Gandalf vs Sauron
Thorin vs Azog

I am obsessed with Saruman - aspiring to know every last detail about him.

I like to think of myself as a Saru-scholar.

Frodo versus Gollum [In reply to] Can't Post

Good thing Frodo lost and Gollum fell in.

No Orc, No Orc!!
It's a wonderful town!!!
Mount Doom blew up,
And the Black Tower's down!!
The orcs all fell in a hole in the ground!
No Orc, No Orc!!
It's a heckuva town!!!

I'm gonna go with Galadriel v herself? [In reply to] Can't Post

Or maybe Galadriel vs. the One Ring? I'm not sure what to call it, but I think her internal struggle with the temptation of the Ring was pretty interesting. Often those internal battles are the more important ones, e.g. Thorin and his dragon-sickness. That one would probably come in second place, but the whole "gold swallowing" visualization was stunning. And if Thorin hadn't beaten the dragon-sickness, Dain would probably have been killed, leaving the (North or East?) less secured, so probably pretty important. However, if Galadriel had succumbed to the temptation of the One Ring, well...

In place of a dark lord you would have a QUEEN - not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn, treacherous as the sea, stronger than the foundations of the Earth! All shall love me and despair..."

Pretty chilling, when you think about it.

But as far as the more physical, external fights go, it would either be Eowen vs. the Witchking or Bard v. Smaug. Tough call, really.

Why yes, I DO look like Anna Friel!

On that note, Gandalf vs the Ring beats it :p [In reply to] Can't Post

Another Maiar, especially one of Gandalf's power wielding the Ring? Oh man,

But Gandalf wasn't tempted by the One Ring [In reply to] Can't Post

At least not in the movie, and not the same way that Galadriel was. I think he was too afraid of it - that is, afraid of what it would do to him - to really be tempted by it.

Why yes, I DO look like Anna Friel!

I think you missed many alternatives [In reply to] Can't Post

But others have already pointed that out Wink so I will say what I think of those you wrote! I think Saruman vs Gandalf (In Orthanc) is pretty epic, that's exactly how a battle between two wizards should be like! I also enjoyed all the "fighting" in Dol Guldur, anything involving Sauron outside of his comfort zone (Mordor) is epic.

My belief [In reply to] Can't Post

Thorin and Azogs duel is very decisive for the dwarves. If Thorin didn't kill Azog, then Dain, Balin, Dwalin, Oin, Gloin, and even poor Gimli, could have been next on Azogs hit list. And we all know just how succesful he was before his death.....

Azog and Bolg. That is all I can say.............
