Bolg's Belly Button

This thread is dedicated to Bolg's belly button. Surely it is undeniable proof that Orcs are mammals!

Small detail as it is, it would indeed suggest that Orcs reproduce the traditional way, and aren't born in "mud pits" like Saruman's Uruk-hai.

Very indicative of how much Saruman was muddling

The uruk-hai were pretty exceptional for orcs, being "genetically engineered" and grown in an artificial womb by Saruman. Almost surprised the white wizard didn't go one step further with his gunpowder and invent the gun. Did the uruk hai have belly buttons? And who was Bolg's mother?

I think we need a thread on belly button acting.

Although it should come with a warning: Orc belly buttons cannot be unseen.
“Tollers,” Lewis said to Tolkien, “there is too little of what we really like in stories. I am afraid we shall have to try and write some ourselves.”

Mrs Azog Uruk-hai have belly buttons also, so, um, I guess they're mammals too? Also, "muddling" . . . pun intended?!

Could she look like this? Of course Uruk-hai are mammals. Film-Saruman just used alchemy to speed things along. He had to build his army quickly and didn't have time to wait for them to procreate.

Your link won't work for me. But if you google screencaps of Lurtz, as well as toys and collectibles he doesn't seem to have a bellybutton

Yeah, I thought that pic was apropos to the discussion, although it's debatable wheither or not it is actually supposed to be a she-orc. It could be argued that Saruman's process makes the Uruk-hai of the films some form of homunculi. I am very certain, though, that this was never Tolkien's intent (although his thoughts on the origins of Orcs went through many permutations).

The uruks were born the usual way that results in belly buttons, but the "mud-womb" you see them emerge from was some Saruman-sorcery to speed up the maturation into adulthood. Why waste time with infancy/adolescence?

Does this work? It doesn't stand out as much as the other pic, but I'm pretty sure the belly button is there It's a lot more visible on the Weta figures of him, like this one

It would explain Bolg's darker skin and hair, and flatter nose. He really does take after his mom.

Mostly because allowing Saruman to essentially create living beings from scratch would give him too much power and it just doesn't fit with Tolkien's world. In any case, wouldn't it mean that Saruman's Uruks are essentially full-grown babies? Rather disturbing to think about (and why I prefer the portrayal in the book, it just leaves things up to your own imagination)

The image might represent a female Orc, but that is just because I think that it might have an intentional (if subtle) feminine appearance. For all I know, Peter Jackson and his crew might have scattered a few goblin-women around the Goblin Town sequence but they are just difficult to spot.
