But as for your original statement on this thread, Bomby... I totally agree with you! RA displayed some incredibly subtle eyeball acting. My favorite moment is during the acorn scene. When Dwalin tells him about the Lake-town refugees, his eyes swivel to the side and take the character *instantly* from warm to EVIL. It was a magnificent moment to watch on film

the Diamond-Shaped Hole in the Barricade was A Singular Scene of Special Magnificence. After Rallying the Town-folk in Laketown, this was a,.. a,... A Betrayal of the Worst kind. Richard's eye-glances towards his kin was Extraordinary THEY noticed how Messed up he had become, YET? they Still wanted to Follow him. It was here that EACH..became Totally Conflicted & you can see it in their EYES. The Other actors did a great job of Eye-Ball Acting since they were SSOoo covered UP,from head to Toe in Prothetics. In Particular, Bombur who ONLY had his eyes to do his acting. Bifur, Poor guy had to spend most of THE Entire Movie some-what Cross-Eyed?

I wouldn't say he smoulders, but I was amazed at how much he communicated with just his eyes. How many people *knew* that Balin figured out Bilbo had the Arkenstone just by his All-Knowing-Balin-Esque eye movements? Wow. Seriously impressive eyeball acting!

Balin glances @ Gandalf in AUJ after his Story of the Battle of Moria Gate. when Thorin says "He died of his wounds years ago.." Indicating Both Balin & Gandalf Doubted those words. A simple glance spoke volumes...& fore-shadowed what was to come. In many ways, it was Balin that kept the Company together, as the Always wise consultant, & backed-up by his brother...& the only one to Cry @ times in the Films. Of all the supporting characters he was given the MOST to do. Knowing his future Death in Moria made him a Truly tragic figure too.

Wow. He was so very, very smouldery in that whole sequence. Ain't no elf in Middle Earth who looks half as good, IMO. He does smoulder at Azog as he pulls his final trick to send the orc under the ice, doesn't he? The dwarf KILLS with a smoulder. What a life ruiner.

Richard Armitage has commented that he wanted to ski down a mountain dressed as Thorin but PJ wouldn't let him. I suspect it's because it would have resulted in lawsuits from various nature conservancies and NZ tourism boards, who would have been furious at the SCORCHING of the picturesque tree line and melted snow pack. And his nephew is just as bad. Some have complained that the Hobbit films needed to be on location more, but really, PJ needed to film where any unexpected damage from the HEAT could be readily contained with the overhead sprinkler system. .

As said in the Appendices, so accomplished as an actor. It was a privilege to have him in these films, and to be able to watch him. Another Hobbit actor who should have been showered with awards - and his scene with Thorin in Bag End, arrival at Bag End, scene with Bilbo in BOFA are favorites of mine - Ken Stott is AMAZING. ....for our dead were beyond the count of grief . *chills* - incredible voice and use of voice, too. Yes, I am afraid. I fear for you...

"Best Supporting Actor" @ the OSCERS THIS Set of Movies, would have NOT been as Great as it is.. Without him. Early in the Videos, it seemed he was a Bit out of his Element? in the Training sessions, etc. But? it's likley he said to Himself... "If John Callen can do this, so can I" His career has mostly been "Drawing Room" Theater...Not Action/Adventure...but he hung in there To the Benefit of all. Maybe? it's the "Father Christmas" look that brought you right into his Character..? AND the Closest to "Book Dwarve"... that we got. All HAIL! Balin bomby

You're not the same hobbit as the one who left the Shire. I mean, just look at that SMOULDER on that hobbit in the last pic! He must have picked it up by spending so much time with the Heirs of Durin on their Quest. What do you bet that Thorin was so slow to accept Bilbo into the Company because the hobbit couldn't SMOULDER to save his life. But he does learn in his time on the road, apparently!
