Correct guesses win Apple-tarts !! 1. Unusually wary and sharp of ear, And fleet of foot when danger is near. Yet these were slain 3019 the year, Without ceremony nor even a bier. It’s said some must die so that other may live- On the seventh of March their lives they did give. 2. No drouth at its mouth For its mouth was the shunt, And a way for the spray To get to the front.

I'm pretty sure the answer to the first riddle is: Oliphaunts. I don't know about the second unless it is the same (with the spray coming from the trunk).

For #1 - Connies, and chuckles for "beer" Henneth Annun seems to work well for #2, but I had another in mind. But apples tarts for your answer....

but not necessarily better answer to #2. No drouth at its mouth For its mouth was the shunt, And a way for the spray To get to the front.

No drouth at its mouth For its mouth was the shunt, And a way for the spray To get to the front. Squire's answer - Henneth Annun seems to work well but... I had in mind "The Deeping Wall" (The only "break" in the Wall was the culvert (mouth) through which the Deeping Stream flowed.
