Christopher Plummer was almost Gandalf Can't Post

I thought this was pretty funny. He's a fan of the book but he was worried about the time commitment. I think he would have made an excellent Gandalf, unlike Sean Connery. But I think we lucked out with Sir Ian!

"It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule." Gandalf, "The Last Debate."

I agree on all counts, demnation [In reply to] Can't Post

I never heard that Plummer was in consideration as Gandalf, but I have no trouble imagining him doing a splendid turn at the role.
I also think we lucked out with IM over just about anybody else, especially Connery. Unsure
By and large, the personnel who undertook the project verses some of the 'first choices' make a fan like me believe in Providence (not the one in Rhode Island).
That reluctance due to time commitment, particularly time commitment in NZ, seems to have served as a sort of filter to bring in only people who were willing to fully invest in the project emotionally. So it seems to me, anyway.

A wizard with thirteen dwarves... [In reply to] Can't Post

What's so fearsome about that?!

Oh I must stop these doubts, all these worries [In reply to] Can't Post

If I don't I just know I'll turn back!
I must now be the thing they are seeking:
They are seeking the Hobbit they lack...
