He was later replaced by Richard Harris when his health failed. He was not his former self, but it was still exciting to see him onstage. I was fortunate to see Yul Brynner in King and I and Richard Kiley in Man of La Mancha. I think only Yul Brynner was anywhere near close to the original run standard. He walked onstage, all the females in the audience gasped, he did his pose and got a standing ovation! Geez, I love theatre!

Yul Brynner could play that role on his worst day. T.H. White was not looking healthy in that photo...too much tobacco, too much booze....almost all in those photos lived a similar lifestyle except Julie Andrews. I can understand how he had a heart attack at age 57. I think he went downhill fast in the last years of his life. One of the last photos from his 1964 American tour..looks old for 57: http://upload.wikimedia.org/...Boston-CollegeII.jpg

... when I was young by my mother and her aunt. My first real theatre visit: I loved it, and the things I remember most about it now are the way they made it look as if it was snowing in the scene when Arthur and Guinevere first met - it seemed so magical to me then - and my horror at noticing that my great aunt had fallen asleep.

and then seeing Burton onstage. He didn't have quite the power as before but he still had that wonderful diction. "each ev'ning from Decembah to Decembah, befoah you go to sleep upon yoah cot, think back on all the days that you remembah, of Ca-me-lot" It gave me goosebumps!

...and Mary Martin in Sound of Music... It's interesting, comparing the songs used in the stage musicals to the ones that made it to the movie versions. I always miss them in the movies... "Those seven deadly virtues, those ghastly little traps, oh no my liege they were not meant for me..."

To help them escape when they're blue? The sheildmaid who is ailing, the elf guy who is glum The dwarf who is wailing from hammering his thumb When they're beset and besieged The folk not noblessly obliged However do they manage to shed their weary lot? Oh, what do simple folk do...we do not? Psst... I have it on LP too...

It's true confessions in here, isn't it! "Sir Dinadan's in form, and feeling in his prime - Ya, ya, ya - oh we all have a glorious time Sir Sagramore is fit, and Sir Lionel feels sublime....."
