Just for fun: dream casting for female dwarves Can't Post

PJ and Co. did a great job casting female elves. I'm a bit sad, however, that we didn't get any female dwarf characters!

Let's have some fun: If you were casting female dwarves (featured characters, not background extras), which actresses would you choose? Who do you think would rock prosthetics, facial hair and dwarvish mannerisms?

For starters: I think Emily Blunt would make a fantastic dwarf woman.

All possible Western Dwarf women.

Then there are those of the Eastern Dwarves:

No Orc, No Orc!!
It's a wonderful town!!!
Mount Doom blew up,
And the Black Tower's down!!
The orcs all fell in a hole in the ground!
No Orc, No Orc!!
It's a heckuva town!!!

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Well I've wondered which of the 13 dwarves could have been female [In reply to] Can't Post

I mean, why not? The Battlestar Gallactica reboot turned Starbuck into a woman - speaking of which, Katee Sackoff would make a great Dwarf female kick-butt warrior. And at 5'6" she'd fit in well with the main cast. But anyway, I think Ori would have been okay as a girl, I mean Adam Brown threw his pinecone like a girl (how very sexist of me to say that)! I also think Bombur could have been a girl, I understand that when he posed for the "Dwarves Illustrated" calendar he wore an apron and a bra, LOL! I would so love to see that calendar, but probably will never happen. And finally, Kili. Yeah, I said that, but he's SO pretty and has the least amount of facial hair, it really wouldn't have been much of a stretch. I mean, look at him next to Fili:

Fili is definitely the more masculine of the two, what a beard! But there's NO WAY Thorin could have been a woman, he's WAY too masculine and majestic for that!

No, Thorin is just fine the way he is - and this is the closest I'm ever going to get to that calendar, hubba hubba!

Why yes, I DO look like Anna Friel!

you're definitely onto something with Kili... [In reply to] Can't Post

No wonder Fili is so protective and concerned all the time! Kili's actually his little sister.

YES to Katee Sackhoff as a dwarf!

I propose Jed and Evageline switch places. [In reply to] Can't Post

There's actually nothing in the book that identifies Nori as male, not even a pronoun (every other dwarf gets at least male pronoun at some point in the book, or in LOTR). The only thing that technically identifies him as male is the blanket statement that Dis is the only female mentioned "in these histories", but that's open to interpretation.

So Evageline can have her Kili romance without breaking the special Gimli and Galadriel/Legolas relationship, and I get to see Jed Brophy as an elf again, win win for everyone.

If I could choose [In reply to] Can't Post

an actress from any time and place (since we're just daydreaming here) to play Thorin's sister Dis, I think Irene Papas would be absolutely perfect. Not only an amazing actress, but except for her brown eyes the family resemblance is pretty great (maybe she could borrow Orlando Bloom's blue contacts). Smile

Perhaps Hayley Atwell could make a good dwarf. I'd love to see her show off a rough dwarf-persona.

But wouldn't it be strange to say "in these histories" and not include Bilbo's tale, or the chart on the preceding page (of this statement)... where Nori, Ori, and Dori are said to be remote kinsmen of Thorin?

Tolkien does employ the word kinswoman as well (Ioreth speaks to her kinswoman in The Lord of the Rings for example)... although I be not a linguist myself, so I don't know how that goes much far (perhaps Tolkien uses kinsmen somewhere that includes females?)...

... but just noting it Wink

What about Amy Poehler?

I also think there's a lot of potential for Taryn Manning as a dwarf!
