Middle-earth March Madness - Round 2! Vote Now! Can't Post

Round 1 is in the history books, as Middle-earth March Madness continues to capture the attention of Tolkien fans worldwide! In our first round, we had over 190,000 total votes cast, with the most contentious match-ups recieving nearly 10,000 votes! Voting for Round 2 starts now! (Vote below).

Round 1 didn't have many close match-ups, but there were definitely a few surprises.

The most contraversial seems to be (11) Thranduil taking down (6) Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit division. As the 2014 Middle-earth March Madness champion, Thranduil seems to have a dedicated and loyal following that should help him through his next match-up with (3) Beorn. (Or will fan backlash against those Thranduites push Beorn through?!)

In The Lord of the RIngs division, (8) Arwen was able to take down The Dark Lord himself, (9) Sauron. Will she make it past (1) Galadriel to possible match-up against (4) Aragorn?!

In The Others division, (2) Father Christmas was knocked off by (15) Legolas of Gondolin, obviously taking advantage of the name recognition of another famous Elf.

There are a lot of intriguing match-ups in round 2, which I'm sure some TORn staffer will highlight in an article this week. Maybe you want to highlight your favorite match-ups in this round? Submit an article to spymaster@theonering.net with your display name and a small bio, and we'll see if we can post it!

Voting in this round will remain open until March 26th at 10pm ET. Vote Now and tell your friends! [Round 2 Download] [Round 1 Results] [Round 1 Download]

the lack of female characters is disappointing : ( [In reply to] Can't Post

i appreciate everyone's hard work, but (nonetheless) the lack of female characters s disappointing. i can understand in the hobbit, but the silmarillion has a +wealth+ of interesting female characters...

1. varda -- angellic being of the stars... often called upon by elves, edain, and hobbits. in particular glorfindel, frodo, etc.

2. yavanna -- angellic being of growing things

3. vanna -- another angelic being

4. vaire -- angelic being who weaves the warp and weft of time

5. nienna -- angelic being of pity and compassion -- such an +incredibly+ interesting character, and one who embodies much of tolkien's views on the power of compassion

6. unien -- angelic being of the sea. beloved of the teleri.

7. ilmare -- angelic being, a chieftan of the maiar

8. arien -- angelic being who guides the sun

9. miriel -- noldo queen -- intelligent, skilled, mother of feanor, first elf to die in aman (suicide)

10. nerdanel -- noldo -- supremely talented artist, and extremely wise. also wife of feanor, and whose energy and will brought seven elven sons into the world.

11. ardhel -- noldo -- adventurous, bold, self-sacrificing.

12. idril -- noldo -- sagacious, brave, fore-sighted. saved her people during the fall of gondolin.

13. elwing -- half-elven -- courageous, determined. went with her husband, earendil, to beg for mercy and forgiveness from the valar.

14. haleth -- edain -- hugely independent. hugely brave. leader of her people. was offered domain over lands by caranthir, and refused him.

15. finduilas -- noldo -- lover of ill-fated turin. in an interesting trio of dynamics with gwindor and turin. reputedly the only thing that could have saved turin from his fate.

16. este -- angelic being, provider of relief and rest and healing.

17. nessa -- angelic being, swift, independent, strong, athletic

18. indis -- noldo -- wise and fair and strong. mother of the noldorian dynasty that would shape middle-earth.

19. ... i could go on... but you see, there are +so+ many interesting females in the silmarillion, and such a dearth of them represented here. i find march madness extremely entertaining, but the lack of females represented is always a bit of a downer.

again, thank you for the hard work.

cheers --

.

aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo
