as I think his death was so well filmed and written. It really resonates and though it is so sad, it also does Théoden so much justice. I like BF's idea for runners up, so.... - Haldir's was most heartbreaking. I remember seeing TTT the first time and the camera lingering ... I put my hand up and mentally said, Oh no, get he camera off him! knowing it was Certain Doom. - Azog's death is indeed MOST satisfying. -Denethor's: unintended comedy. Not my favorite. -Smaug's: most necessary yet regrettably so. He was such a wicked lovely thing.

Brought down while convinced of his invulnerability, and visually it was wicked-cool.

I would agree with you Black Fox. Thorin was emotional. I've seen it about 4 times now and I still get a little emotional when I see Bilbo break down the way that he did. Smaug/Master of lake town: Smaug was spectacular. His grasping for air and showing the sheer pain was great and then falling onto the Master of the lake was dramatic and deserving. That's what you get when you be greedy. I actually hope in the EE to see what happens to Alfrid. I couldn't stand him any long. I mean for him to say that every man doesn't have the courage to go out and fight is down right pathetic. Grow some and get out there and fight. Fili's I was shocked also that happened to him. I was really sad.

Boromir - Because it was quite emotional since he had just started to come to his senses concerning the ring. Also, it was in a moment when he tried so hard protecting Merry and Pippin. Saruman - Because it felt so real. Also, it made me cringe because it was so ill-timed. I'm mostly thinking of the stabbing part. Falling onto the spike wasn't really the death-moment for me. it doesn't matter for me that it wasn't exactly like in the book on this one.

For those of us who were first-timers and hadn't read the books, it was a death. And as it was portrayed in the films, the aftermath (the grieving of the fellowship) was terribly sad, very moving. My top three: 1. Gandalf 2. Boromir 3. Theoden

For me by a mile the most real and well acted scene was his death - best actor in the trilogies is Sean Bean imo. Felt it so much more and probably the only part of all 6 movies i think is better than the books

And out of screen and then back down? I find that scene so hilarious! I must have seen TTT about 10 times in the theatre and couldn't stop myself from giggling at it after the first time. I know, that's bad, but it just strikes me each time.

but I thought Smaug was appropriately melodramatic, twisting and turning and gasping and flailing like a gut-shot black hat cowboy in an old B-western.

Fíli's death is definitely the most shocking. For me, it was also the most unsettling scene I have seen on screen so far ... to see a character that has grown dear to my heart over the course of three movies being executed and dumped like that. It took some time for me to process. I even had trouble sleeping the night after having watched BOTFA because every time I closed my eyes I saw these pictures in my mind. I never would have thought that a movie scene, the death of a fictional character, could have such an impact on me. I would also count the death scenes of Thorin, Boromir and Haldir and Smaug among the best. Oh, and Azog's death was easily the most satisfying, I agree with BlackFox and Brethil.
