I'd rather choose slightly less comfortable (my second choice) clothes that are clean, than go with more comfortable, but dirty clothes, which I can't stand (I'm bit of a germophobe).

I voted Appropriate, but I tend to choose my clothes based on cleanness, comfortable-ness, flattering-ness, and appropriateness for the day's activities. The only thing on the list that I don't really care about is stylishness.

Teaching a class or meeting someone? "Nicer" clothes.
Staying in & working at home? No need to change out of the PJs!

as in for work or whatever...
otherwise I tell the fashion police to go stick a fork in their foreheads...   
Mostly what I wear is practical: is it warm enough? Cool enough? stretchy enough? layers for winter, breeches for horses, diveskins for kayaking (sun protection, i care not whether I look good in spandex).
One of my favorite recent finds is those surfer rashguard shirts: they make great base layers in winter, and sun protection in summer.
Also muck boots and those Canadian Sorrel boots. And snow sneakers.

I will wear a style that is appropriate to the occasion, but I'll always ask myself what color I feel like wearing. Some days I'm red and raring to go, other days I need green. On another day I might want black, or on another something soft and pale...etc. I think the color is almost more important than the outfit.
