The dwarves were singing so dang loud, they couldn't hear it when he politely rang the bell. Or politely knocked, thinking perhaps the bell was out of order. So he ended up banging on the door out of frustration - he was late, tired, hungry and cranky for missing out on all the fun. But then, he re-grouped in time for the door to be opened and give us this:

It may be that ringing a doorbell is not majestic enough.  In other words, the film makers wanted to emphasize Thorin's kingly status and crucial role right from the start, having him enter Bag End with a flair.
Kim, that's a great picture, very suitable. Poor Bilbo! He appeared quite shaken at the latest after the dragon discussion.

OK - serious answer. That loud commanding knock that stops everyone mid-sentence is so much more powerful - so much more manly than a little tinkly doorbell.

we saw Thorin's idea of a doorbell when he led the charge out of Erebor... 
Obviously Bag End didn't have a doorbell worthy of the King Under the Mountain!

video, probably one of the production videos, when the other 8 dwarves come tumbling in they bring the doorbell with them. Bofur hands it to Bilbo and says, "You should get this fixed," LOL! But I agree that the heavy knocking is just oh, so Majestic, and so Thorin, too
