Mystery Science Theater 3000 [In reply to] Can't Post

I discovered this show in the early 90's, during its 4th season. I made a lot of tapes of the show and watched them through the years. I watched their version of "The Day the Earth Froze" most recently. It is my all time favorite episode of the show. It had everything-funny Invention Exchanges, a hilarious short feature (Here Comes the Circus) and an even better main feature. Mystery ScienceTheater 3000 helped me survive the 90s with a smile on my face.

The Duchess of Duke Street, The Story of the Jews [In reply to] Can't Post

I have been rediscovering an old childhood favourite in The Duchess of Duke Street. It's a BBC drama first broadcast in the 70's, about a woman in the early 1900's who rises from humble beginnings as a cook, and works her way up to the point of running a hotel. Gemma Jones in the title role is really terrific, and I am enjoying this very much - highly recommended. If you like things like Upstairs, Downstairs, you would probably enjoy this.

I have finished the final episode of Story of the Jews (Simon Schama). I was putting it off a little bit because I expected it to be a difficult watch. It certainly was in parts, but I also found it very interesting and thought provoking. I have enjoyed all of Simon Schama's programmes, but this one is different, because it is personal for him. I like this quote, which sums up the series for me:

(From Wikipedia)
Robert Lloyd, TV critic for the Los Angeles Times, said that Schama "has produced a series that is at once informative, entertaining, thought-provoking, heart-wrenching and, in its final episode, in which he confronts the paradoxes of modern Israel, more than a little maddening. Like the religion and the culture that surrounds it, each of which loves an argument, it is inconclusive and open to discussion".[10]

Silk, the second season [In reply to] Can't Post

This is about a chamber of barristers in London. I very much enjoyed Season 1, and Season 2 was similarly engrossing. Very thought-provoking, and plotting that expects you to pay attention! Interesting character interactions, where integrity has to share close quarters with ambition and venality.

The Fault in Our Stars [In reply to] Can't Post

I read the book last week and had been wanting to see the movie ever since. The movie was faithful to the book, and was well done. I loved the female lead, and Defoe was perfect as the author, and the parents were great. The boy playing the friend Isaac matched the mental picture I had of him. The male lead wasn't as good, in my opinion. I know they were trying to show his bravado, but the fact that he smiled every moment until near the very end started to grate on me. Could have been the actor, or could have been the director's choice, I guess.

I apologized to Uncle Baggins for showing him a tear-jerker when he has a cold, and he said, "It's all right. I only used a few more kleenex than I would have otherwise." I love that he cries at movies like this. <3

A side note about Riverdance the show 1995 on YouTube… [In reply to] Can't Post

I am so happy to have found this. When I made the tape that my DVD was copied on years ago, it was from a broadcast on TV PBS. They were doing a pledge drive at the time, so a lot of it was cut out and I hadn't realized it. I rewatched the 1995 on YouTube yesterday and saw three major numbers that I had never seen before, including Michael Flatley playing the flute, some tap dancers, and another dance by the flamenco artist. Oh, and another song by the Harlem deliverance ensemble.

I said in the other thread that I had been alone in my family to be moved by Celtic music, but I remembered last night that my mother loved the Chieftains. She died in 1991 so I've been without her for a long time and I had forgotten that we shared that.

Kingsman [In reply to] Can't Post

This movie was a lot of fun...up to a certain point, when the violence got way over the top and I had to look away. Then it seemed to get back on track, until the big finale. At that point, I started wondering, "Is this a Matthew Vaughn movie, cause it sure feels like it!" (It is). But even with all the violence, my friend at I found ourselves laughing at the pure spectacle (even while hiding our eyes). I thought Colin Firth did a great job, as did as Mark Strong and Taron Egerton. Too bad Jack Davenport wasn't in it for very long, and there was a fun "hey!" cameo at the beginning.

And Broadchurch, what a letdown [In reply to] Can't Post

the second series was. Still far better than a lot of TV of late but not a patch on the first season. I really only kept watching for the interaction between Miller and Hardy. I did like the final episode though.

But this series should have been re-titled Sandbrook and Broadchurch. We got fed up with the Sandbrook case, and it didn't really lead anywhere. It wasn't especially riveting, and I had guessed early on that they were all involved with the murder of the girls. I would have happily sat through 6 episodes showing the court case. I was hooked, in that respect.

I am looking forward to where they go with Series 3. I hope they recapture the crux and soul of Series 1.

And now I wish I hadn't.

It was the most bizarre telling of Noah ever.

And the most unBiblical.

Which is a real shame considering that the story is great as is.

Given the reception of this series, I am hopeful [In reply to] Can't Post

that they will go back to focusing on one main story and the impact on the people, rather than the scattered approach of Series 2. I wanted more of the court case too, and the whole Danny story - the ripple effects into the community of a crime such as this were so well explored in Series 1 and it was a pity they didn't continue with this.

I finally watched it a while back, and kept wondering if Sir Peter knew his ent designs had been ripped off to be dropped into a Biblical movie.

I can't say I enjoyed it, exactly. It was just kind of weird.

Ray Harryhausen... [In reply to] Can't Post

The Watchers were a homage to his creations - as were PJ's Ents. Hence the similarity.

Love the film myself. My #2 of 2014.

"The danger with any movie that does as well as this one does is that the amount of money it's making and the number of awards that it's got becomes almost more important than the movie itself in people's minds. I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that."

Rented "Dracula Untold" [In reply to] Can't Post

Had been curious, because I thought the movie posters were cool. And hey, it's Luke Evans.

Ended being pretty much what critics had said, not great, but not horrible. And it's got to be the most warmly sympathetic re-telling of the Dracula legend EVER, seriously you're hoping the guy will move in next door. Luke Evans, what a sweetie and so ripped, LOLCool
It's not gory, everything is kind of bland, and as critics had pointed out, so much is murkily dark it's hard to tell at times what is going on.

Charles Dance is marvelous in the regrettably brief appearance as the creepy creature who turns our hero, but hey, he's up front about the pros and consEvil. Overall worth a look when it hits general TV screens, as once again this Prince has heroism and badassery forced on him, when he just wants to live the quiet live and raise his family.Cool

Boxtrolls, John Wick [In reply to] Can't Post

now there's a contrast. :-)

Boxtrolls is stop motion animated film from Laika who also did Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Corpse Bride.

It was great fun, I think. I think one thing that appeals to kids is the depiction of children being naughty in permissible ways. There's a great scene where a small child who's living with the boxtrolls is making music with one of them in all sorts of inventive ways including smashing light bulbs for percussion. I think there was lots of stuff that would delight children in this movie but it's also a pretty darn good tale for adults, too. Or at least it's told in a way adults could enjoy.

There is a mid-credits scene that gets very meta and made me howl.

Definitely recommended for all ages.

John Wick. Ah, this one would be hard to recommend or not. I was worried about how violent it was going to be after hearing descriptions of uber-violent and violence porn.

It is violent. I think the body count is somewhere around 80. But it is, to a great extent, stylized, highly choreographed violence. It is a dance. It draws heavily from various hand to hand fighting styles and gun fu. It was not, imo, excessively gory or bloody and I think it was attempting to attract people who appreciate fighting styles (if you enjoyed the fight between Peggy and Dottie in Agent Carter... then you appreciate fighting styles) and not really someone who's getting off on gratuitous violence.

The story is very straight foward. There's no message that I could detect. There's no large mystery. There's not even much of a surprise element anywhere.

But it was a well told story. It assumed an intelligent audience and let you discover stuff without lots of exposition. And it was tightly edited and never dragged.

spoiler serving as caveat ...
...

...

...

Someone else on these boards warned that violence was directed at a puppy. It was a significant plot point. It didn't linger long on the event and it impacted the main character in a way that mattered. But be warned if you have a code or strong feelings on the matter.

I can recommend this movie toward those that will enjoy it. Those that won't will find all sorts of faults with it. In my world, both those who love it and those that don't are probably right for what works for them.
