Middle-earth theme park to be built in Spain Can't Post

thedoor You might recall those rumours from around 18 months ago that Universal was considering a Middle-earth theme park. Nothing ever came of that, but it appears that an eight-hectare Middle-earth theme park to be called La Comarca (The Shire) will soon be built in Rincon de la Victoria in Spain.

RINCON DE LA VICTORIA is to be the home of a fantasy theme park based on the universe and characters created by JRR Tolkien.

Eight hectares have been allocated for the park, which is to be named La Comarca (The Shire). The project was unveiled today by the town’s mayor Francisco Salado at the international tourism fair FITUR, currently taking place in Madrid.

“The Shire will become one of the major tourism attractions of our town. The material will have a very low environmental impact, to create an integrated image in nature,” said Mr Salado.

He added: “It will be a place in which family leisure, sports and nature will go hand-in-hand in a unique space of great beauty set in a time of fairy tales and the magic of the elves. Without a doubt, Rincon de la Victoria will have a top-rated tourist attraction, which will also add to the variety of attractions of Malaga.”

The site selected will be very important as the location lacks any connection to the book or [In reply to] Can't Post

the films. Will it go after certain artistic impressions vs film?
It could look somewhat different than what has been presented. If it is a look alike to the films, and depending what else is around to draw people in (as Harry Potter at Universal Florida rather than Scotland)
it might have some success. It could be flop as well.

Not really a 'Tolkien' park after all. [In reply to] Can't Post

The developers are backing off from the original statement. It turns out that the theme park is not directly based on Middle-earth and the developers don't have any permissions or authorizations from the Tolkien Estate, Middle-earth Enterprises, Warner Bros. or any other rights-holders.

It was pretty naive of them to use Tolkien's name.... [In reply to] Can't Post

...and imagery based on the films if they didn't have any sort of copyright clearance. And it will surely be hard convincing anyone that it isn't supposed to be connected with Middle-Earth, having started that way.

This seems a stretch of ignoring copyright to the extreme, in my naive view. [In reply to] Can't Post

Hard to deny to similarities to Tolkien. Wonder how it will legally play out.

Name-dropping as P.R. [In reply to] Can't Post

Some persons take the attitude that any press is good press, but this could severely backfire on the theme park developers. The name of the project is probably generic enough to keep them out of hot water; however, the Tolkien- and film-inspired imagery that was used in the initial announcement seems to have Warner Bros.' lawyers on high alert.
