Little Moments That Give Me Joy!
|
Can't Post

Regardless of where one stands on PJ's films (I admit I'm closer to the TOTAL FANBOY end of the spectrum than the THESE MOVIES NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE side), we must surely all agree that there are little individual moments that just always bring us a smile or a tear. I'm not talking about the big epic moments, I'm talking about Bilbo saying "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit" in AUJ. I'm talking about about the transition between Gandalf saying "That is why we'll need a burglar" and Bilbo's head popping up from behind the rocks in DOS. I'm talking about the auction scene in BOFA when Bilbo says, "He was my friend." These -- and many more moments like them -- always give me a little glow, no matter how many times I see them. I'm guessing we all have a few of these to share?

- The moon runes scene, when we see the wide shot as the light shines down on the crystal and the music swells.
- When Galadriel says, "You knew" and gives Gandalf that knowing smile when they find out that the dwarves have left Rivendell.
- When the moon comes out from behind the clouds and Bilbo realizes the moonlight will help them find the keyhole.
- When Smaug stares mesmerized at the golden statue.
- The acorn scene, when Thorin sees what Bilbo holds and hears his explanation, then they share those beautiful smiles.
- When Bilbo picks up his handkerchief from the floor of Bag End at the end.
That's just a few off the top of my head. These movies are just filled with little moments like these.

The moment in AUJ when Gandalf on Gwaihir zooms onto the screen from our screen right as the eagles bank and pass over the mountain shoulder. I must have blinked and missed it on the big screen, but once I had bought the EE I kept pausing and repeating as it simply made me laugh out loud with joy. For a split second I am on that eagle and seeing Middle Earth through Gandalf's eyes... In a 180 degree switch of emotion-Bilbo's wordless keening and rocking beside Thorin's body. (First post since 2001, I think...!)

When Bilbo's leaving, and there's that awkward pause as he and the Dwarves stare at each other... and then "If any of you ever comes through the Shire... tea -- is at four." That is my favourite moment in the entire trilogy. :')

The moment Bilbo pops out of the tops of the trees in Mirkwood and we see the butterflies. The moment on the boat when the Dwarves, one by one, stand as they see the Lonely Mountain. The introduction of Thranduil on his throne. And that's just what I can think of quickly.

Those figures belonged to our tour guide, Anwen (her real name!). She took the right characters to each location and posed them in the scenes. She was even running off to the store to buy characters which were released while we were on the tour! It was so much fun!

The ones that bring me joy, as opposed to sorrow: 1. Pretty much any time the Dwarves are singing 2. Especially Thorin singing in Bag End - still mesmerizing! 3. "I'm going on an adventure!" 4. Scenery - dwarves walking under the waterfall, along the glacier, Rock & Pillar range, & eagles flying over the Fjord. 5. Gandalf making the rock fall & roll over goblins in Goblintown. 6. "We're going to need a burglar" - then Bilbo appears over the rock. 7. Fili with all his knives in Murkwood, plus the infamous "Aren't you going to search me?" line - cracks me up every time! 8. Bombur outrunning the other dwarves, and his bouncing barrels scene. 9. Not so many in BOTFA, but Thorin firing an arrow at Thranduil, followed by Bilbo's line "I may be a burglar, but I'd like to think I'm an honest one." 10. And of course, Thorin finally coming to his senses - "Will you follow me, one last time." A little bittersweet, but still makes me happy.
Why yes, I DO look like Anna Friel!

As Gandalf, Bilbo, and the Dwarves are about to escape the Goblins tunnels, The Great Gobin appears in front of them – “What are you going to do NOW Wizard?” Gandalf slices his belly open and . . . The Great Goblin says . . . ”That’ll do it!” A laugh-out-loud moment for me…

... the more of those "little scenes" you'll discover. So, among many others, my current Number One is from DOS EE: that little arrogant "Get movin' !" nod which Thorin gives Bilbo at Beorn's house, just after Gandalf says that he'll go out and talk to Beorn, taking only Bilbo with him.

Fili's face after being relieved of one last last hidden dagger before being locked in his cell in Mirkwood. "We are sons of Durin, and Durin's sons do not flee from a fight." *puppy eyes* *Head butt* (I CAN'T EVEN when it comes to that scene!) Bifur's playing silverware on his head in Rivendell. "Ooooo, you hear that, lads! He thinks we'll blunt the knives!" On Ravenhill, Bilbo falls into the most glorious hobbit crouch position while dodging the bat army. Bilbo's awesome adventurer getup on the return journey to the Shire. He has a cape and a treasure chest. How cute! Tauriel's super-proud smile after Thranduil says Legolas thought she fought well. Any time Thorin growls "I am listening". Kili insisting in a most childlike manner that he can walk when the Lake-town party is fleeing Smaug. Another few amazing Kili-is-five-years-old-moments include "I don't believe this, we're in the cellars!" and of course "We don't have parasites, you have parasites!" and "I can manage" *falls down the stairs*. Bard's youngest daughter throws a dinner plate at an orc. A dinner place. At an orc. Bofur to Bilbo: "I wish you all the luck in the world. I really do." Fili to Thorin: "I belong with my brother". (Another that I totally can't even.) Fili resisting Thorin, who's attempting to throw Bilbo from the wall. And then Bofur and Fili leading Bilbo away while Gandalf distracts Thorin. How awesome is Fili, guys? Best dwarf ever. He gets full dwarf points, all around. Bilbo to Thranduil: "...yesh." Tauriel sticking a dagger into a spider's face, then spinning around to face the camera with her bow already out. It just looks so cool. "No, they won't, they won't see me." "It's out of the question. I won't allow it." "I'm not asking you to allow it." When the Lake-town party and Erebor party reunite. Hugs all around! Gandalf being embarrassed when all the dwarves start assuming he's an experienced dragon slayer. Bard: "Aye, and for that you'd need a smuggler." Balin: "For which we'd pay double." The look on Legolas's face when he finally runs out of arrows. Bilbo frozen in a crawl as the goblin's capture the dwarves and leave him behind. Thorin's khuzdul regarding Thranduil.

Especially when he says those less than brilliant things. It's so endearing. Like a boy, not yet a man, trying so hard to appear as if he is all grown up. And I think that's how Jackson intended it to come across. And Fili is the slightly older brother with a bit more experience and training but still not fully adult. I love that they are so devoted to each other. Oh, the ponies scene! There were 16, now there are 14. Minty & ? Are missing. They were so serious and stuck in indecision until Bilbo arrived.

The actors owned those roles, so they're always having great brother interactions whether in the forefront or the background. Loved every Kili is not-quite-a-man-yet moment. And every Fili moment ever. Another awesome juvenile-Kili moment: When the trolls have Bilbo and Thorin puts down his sword, Kili makes this really frustrated five-year-old face and throws his sword on the ground.
