Peter Jackson vs JRR Tolkien

Do you sometimes feel JRR tolkien doesnt quite get the credit he deserves? while PJ is being lauded over in hollywood, being given huge crowdfunded parties in his honour, knighted etc is important to remember that jrr tolkien actually wrote the story. There has not been a huge party thrown in honour of tolkien from film fans, although the society does good work, it feels like the the film world has taken most of the credit for the stories. whilst people make billions in his name, i find the commercialisation of the books a little bitter sweet.

...of the 20th century, and Lord of the Rings always rates high on the list of best books. The position occupied by Tolkien and his writing is unique - no other fantasy can touch it and I doubt that any ever will, unless time throws up another writer willing to pour his life into the creation of a whole mythology. And even if that happens, Tolkien will always be the original. And when the films are praised, I don't see any sign of people forgetting that Tolkien wrote the stories. His name is mentioned whenever the films are - and being such an unusual name, it stands out. If he were alive, I'm sure he'd be invited. Don't begrudge Peter Jackson the credit he gets for the films. He's poured a lot of himself into them - often to the point of exhaustion - and in the process has created something very special which has meaning for a great many people. And some people have discovered the books because of them. In time there will be other film adaptations, other directors. There can only be one author.

PJ is lauded in Hollywood for doing what they do in Hollywood. Tolkien is lauded in circles where they honor writers. Film fans hold events to honor the films. The Tolkien Society holds events to honor Tolkien, and many in the fandom (including here at TORN) observe the annual toast in honor of his birthday. The books haven't been commercialized; only the covers - they have exactly the same content as always. The mainstream popularity of the movies has increased book sales exponentially. The books and the Tolkien Society will continue on long after the movie hoopla has ended, as they were around long before. And maybe someday someone else will make some films based on Tolkien's books, and people will celebrate those too. Multiple celebrated adaptations haven't hurt William Shakespeare or Jane Austen or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's reputations any. In fact, there are probably some brilliant authors you have only heard of because someone made a movie based on their works.

And I honestly can only think of a few authors that have been as consistently popular as Tolkien has. He had written what are arguably the most popular books of all time, and that was BEFORE the movies. And what's more, PJ and Co have always seemed reverential and respectful of ol' JRR, which I think is quite admirable.

Who is this Tolkeen bloke? Did he write that ridiculous novelization of the Hobbit films, condensing them all into one little book, and eliminating the most important characters? Sheesh!

The books are really quite wonderful, and quite an accomplishment in their own right, though not rivaling Tolkien.

The HP movies are quite entertaining. The books are better. There is one the JKR did which I marvel at...the story grows as the characters age. So, book 1 is appropriate for an 11 year old, book 2 for a 12 year old, and so on. Maybe it was the first time I'd ever noticed that but I found it very interesting.

Some people really are clueless about Tolkien in terms of 'coming before' but most posts like that are either trying to be funny or using a particular troll tactic to get people worked up. I've seen the same thing with D&D but Rowling plays better to the crowds. :-) We can laugh about it though. When I enrolled in school for that graphic design degree I spoke about elsewhere, I told the admissions rep that I would have to miss class the weekend of XXX because I was going to a Tolkien conference. "Tolkien..." she pondered... "isn't that the person who wrote Harry Potter?" That was cluelessness!

...I can confirm that I have encountered a fan or too on Harry Potter forums who expressed the same opinion sincerely. In their defense, they tended to be quite young. And very surprised to learn the publication dates of Tolkien's novels, once I shared the information with them.

we all remember being young and surprised by things that happened long before we were born. We all live and learn.
