Things you have learned with Tolkien-related movies Can't Post

I have watched dozens of times LOTR movies and Hobbit ones.

Im pretty sure I have learned how to shoot a bow without having touched any in my life

Or the HUGE AMOUNT of english I have learned watching the movies and the video diaries.

(Once I played for a season in a orchestra and I learned to dance salsa because every night I watched people dancing all over again for 4 hours night)

So what do you think you have learned? Sword fighting? Smithery?

I've learned... [In reply to] Can't Post

...there is never a bad time to spark up your pipe...

...and... you should move your feet when sword-fighting...

...and...it's okay to trust an elf, despite what others may say...

...and...you can actually live without 7 meals a day...

...and...salted pork always tastes better after winning a fight.

web/html skills [In reply to] Can't Post

I built my own website to share the info I was collecting on the LOTR soundtrack.

I also learned how to do sound capture and audio editing with Audacity. And how to grab screenshots from a DVD. And the meaning of the terms descending third, arpeggio, diegetic, portamento, aleatoric singing, Sprechstimme voices.

I managed a very small forum for awhile but I hated the admin side of it and made my son help me a lot so that might not count as having learned much.

Wanting to share my love of Tolkien with people online has pushed me to learn all sorts of online and computer skills. Gaining confidence in both the computer and creative aspects of all that above was also likely instrumental in my deciding, at the age of 50, to go back to school for a degree in graphic design.

How to Construct cheap, costume chainmail [In reply to] Can't Post

From Chris Smith's The Lord of the Rings: Arms and Armor, I found out how to make chainmail from PVC pipe. By the time of the Hobbit movies, the process had been even futher refined using pre-formed plastic rings.

I learned about New Zealand [In reply to] Can't Post

I learned that New Zealand is incredibly beautiful. It was the beauty of New Zealand which inspired me to go there by myself. Not one among all my friends and family would go.

And once I got there I learned that New Zealand is full of amazing, friendly, hardy people.

The strangest part of that journey was walking along the beach and realizing, while New Zealand may be on the other side of the plant from North America and Europe, it was really very similar to home.

I second that modding up! [In reply to] Can't Post

I first read The Hobbit & LOTR when I was about 10 years old. Probably too young for me. I was really scared that Boromir was a bad guy! It was in later readings that I realized he wasn't on the wrong side. I really like the Boromir of the movies.

Never give up [In reply to] Can't Post

While I pretty-much had that outlook before, I really became so attached to Tolkien's story and the characters... and the faith, perseverence and bravery they displayed become a deep inspiration for me. Throughout my life whenever I faced challenges, I would think of the hobbits (including Bilbo), Strider, Gandalf, and the whole Fellowship and how they just kept putting one foot in front of the other and never gave up.

As others have said, I also discovered the enchantment and beauty of New Zealand. I dream of getting back one day.

Hmm...from the movies and not the books [In reply to] Can't Post

There are a LOT of things that I have learned from the books over the last 48 years, but the question is about the films, so:
Insofar as skills go, I don't know that I could use a sword or a bow strictly from watching it on film.
But: I learned what the characters I loved sounded like and was able to truly visualize them for the first time.
I learned that PJ apparently had picked my brain when he was constructing the Shire, since it looked exactly like I had always imagined.
I learned that Howard Shore is an amazing composer.
I learned that New Zealand is a remarkably beautiful place.
From the commentaries on the DVDs I learned
That acting is not a glamorous game, but a lot of hard and hazardous work.
To watch my step when wading into a River.
To be careful when kicking Orc helmets.
That anyone who can, day after day, put up with having a serious allergic reaction to make-up and still go through with it, is truly dedicated.
I learned what a "bigature" was.
Things I learned in general,
There are things I learned from the movies that I had overlooked in the books, even though I "knew" them; there were moments and quotes I'd missed somehow in all my many readings, and by seeing/hearing them in a new or different context, they stuck out for me and I was able to appreciate the books even more.
I learned that picking holes in something I love is it's own kind of fun, so long as it's done in a spirit of fondness.
I learned that I had thousands of friends all over the entire world that I had never met in person, and likely never would, but they were friends nonetheless.

Some people call it fanfiction. I call it story-internal literary criticism.

Well... [In reply to] Can't Post

In terms of a concrete skill, LotR and TH helped me be able to draw realistic, portrait-like images of people. It was something I was trying to learn for some time, but one day as I spent hours on my first drawing of Frodo, something "clicked" and drawing faces just made so much more sense. As I've practiced on other Middle Earth characters, I've continued to improve. Now I just need to get better at drawing hair!

I've also learned to get attached to characters and care deeply about them. After getting to know characters for three movies (or six, for some) I really feel like they have become my friends. Along with that I never used to cry much at movies, but LotR and TH seem to have changed that trend.

yes! // [In reply to] Can't Post

Since evidence can be adduced and interpreted to corroborate a virtually limitless array of world views, the human challenge is to engage that world view or set of perspectives which brings forth the most valuable, life-enhancing consequences.

I finally mastered the left hand [In reply to] Can't Post

The music from the LotR movies is so glorious I bought the sheet music. I have a piano, but was only ever any good playing the right hand because I played the accordion as a child, and that had push-buttons for the left hand. But I wanted to play the LotR music so badly I at long last taught myself how to read and play the notes for the left hand.

The music still sounds a lot better on the soundtrack, though. Smile

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow....
