Which do you prefer?

Herbal tea for me.

And I just discovered this week that the Honey Dew doughnut shop down the street sells white hot chocolate.

I voted Neither [In reply to] Can't Post

I never acquired a taste for coffee (and yes, I grew up in Seattle) and don't like the taste of tea made from tea leaves, but I've recently discovered herbal teas, so I'm trying to give those a shot (if nothing else, for a warm beverage when I'm sick). But it still mostly tastes like weakly flavored water for me. I'd rather have hot chocolate and apple cider. Smile

I love teas, but I am a resigned coffee fiend. [In reply to] Can't Post

Right now I am really loving chai spice and white blueberry tea (I go through phases) as midday adjuncts. When I am sick, its off the coffee and I love tea that has Echinacea or the 'Throat Coat' with slippery elm bark.

But my daily 'go-to' is coffee. Iced.

I much prefer coffee [In reply to] Can't Post

but I enjoy teas in their own moment.

Sweetened Constant Comment with hard ginger snap cookies is yummy.

I like peppermint tea esp during head colds. I also like ginger tea for soothing tummies and just for enjoyment when I want something hot but not coffee.

Most hot chocolate mixes are too sweet for me. I used to like a certain blend of Ghiaradella cocoa/chocolate but it's become impossible to find. When I am really cold and want something to warm my bones, I make a box of Jello Chocolate cook pudding (not instant) and just get it steaming hot and somewhat thick and then drink/eat it hot. Or, I'll make it from scratch with cocoa/sugar/cornstarch.

Castillian Hot Chocolate
Anna Thomas, _The Vegetarian Epicure Book Two_

1/2 c. cocoa 1/2 c. water
1 c. sugar 1 qt. milk
7 t. cornstarch

Shift the cocoa and sugar together into a medium-sized saucepan.
Dissolve the cornstarch in the water, and stir into the cocoa and sugar
until it is a smooth paste. Begin heating the mixture, stirring it with
a whisk, and gradually pour in the milk. Continue stirring with the
whisk as you bring the liquid to a simmer. Allow the chocolate to simmer
for about 10 minutes, stirring often, until it is thick, glossy and
completely smooth. Serve steaming hot.

Serves six.

To quote the author, "This is the thickest hot chocolate you'll ever
drink - any thicker, and it would be a pudding."

My husband likes Postum as a coffee substitute but he drinks as much coffee as I do as a regular thing.

Love them both [In reply to] Can't Post

Depends on the moment.

Coffee has become my morning drink. I drink tea mostly in the evening if I want something warm.

I love hot chocolate when I've been outside in the cold. I makes me feel like I'm back in my grandma's kitchen, peeling off a wet snowsuit and mittens, putting my boots upside down over the radiator grill in the floor after pulling the bread bags out of the boots (yes, from inside the boots not outside Wink) My hot chocolate has a dash of instant coffee and a dash of cayenne pepper in it. It makes the chocolate seem darker. I also make it with semi sweet chocolate chips instead of the powdered mixes.

I don't like tea, and coffee is vile - I don't even like the smell, although I get a bit wistful when I see someone having a really good coffee and see how much they enjoy it. I'm still searching for the perfect hot chocolate.

Sure! [In reply to] Can't Post

No recipe really but here is what I sort of do:
  • heat up a bit of milk in the microwave (maybe 1/2 inch (1.5 cm)or so) in a mug.
  • Stir in some chocolate chips until they start to melt
  • Keep stirring until you've got a nice smooth syrupy liquid
  • add dash of cayenne and teaspoon of instant coffee and stir
  • add milk and stir
  • heat in microwave and stir again

How much you add of the chocolate, coffee and Cayenne depends on how "dark" or spicey you like it. I use Nestles chips and they seem to work fairly well but I'm betting the better chocolate chips like Ghiradelli's would work even better.

Decadent people add whipped cream. Of course I never do that !

lol... that head shaking icon is a gas [In reply to] Can't Post

I usually buy reddi-whip at Thanksgiving and Christmas for pies and always love squirting the extra in my coffee til it's gone.

a little whipped cream (or leftover half and half from chowder) in coffee or chocolate makes life a little happier. I always use skim milk so adding a little cream once in a while isn't that naughty.

Thanks for the instructions. I'm going to give it a try. I don't have instant coffee on hand. I could try brewing some up a little stronger, though.

We often brew coffee twice as strong and store it in the fridge for putting on ice in the summer. I've found that if you fill half a mug with this stuff (cold) and put in a good scoop of ice cream... you can get pretty happy as well.

Both, and also my plain cocoa [In reply to] Can't Post

I make cocoa by putting baking cocoa in hot water with no milk or sugar. Sometimes I add a tiny drop of peppermint extract. It's pure chocolate goodness, and only 20 calories a cup. It's not for everybody, but I like the bitter taste (I also drink my coffee black and without sugar.)

And I like lots of kinds of herbal teas. There are probably thirty boxes in my kitchen right now. (I'm lucky enough to live near the Celestial Seasonings factory. It's well worth a tour.)

Both and neither [In reply to] Can't Post

I like coffee, but it makes me too jittery. I like Chai and various herbal teas that you can get at specialty shops, but I don't really like it when I make it at home. I like the idea of tea more than I like the tea itself. I'm often taken with the names and packaging, and I think how nice and healthy it will be, but I get it home and make it and....meh. Unsure I think I'm too impatient and don't steep it long enough. Tongue

I'm not a coffee drinker at all and am always amazed that something that smells that good can taste that bad. Tongue
So black tea with a little milk is my go-to drink in the morning, with other flavors on stock for reading and relaxing, and chai lattes are pure heaven. The best invention since chocolate. SmileHeart

Speaking of coffee... [In reply to] Can't Post

Literary Starbucks is a great blog written by 3 college students about literary characters and authors ordering their favorite drink at Starbucks.

Here is today's blog entry (quite fitting for TORn, I think):

15th Feb 2015 | 1,785 notes Gollum
Smeagol goes up to the counter and -
No, no we mustn’t go, precious.
We’ll just order a chai latte, that certainly can’t do any harm.
No, precious, no, they takes it from us.
Our money? Yeah, of course, this is a business.
They takes it from us and they puts it in their boxes.
No, no, but we want our coffee!
Gollum, Gollum, Gollum.
They sells us the coffee, Gollum. They sells it in bagginses.
No, no, no, precious, not the bagginses.
Give us three chances to order our coffee, master. Then we’ll give it to you.
We’re going to kill him, precious. He has his green apron and he wants it. He wants to take it from us.
No, no, no, Gollum, he’ll give us the coffee, we don’t need it.
Yes, precious, yes.
Please, master, please give us the precious.

Gollum hurls himself into the espresso machine. The shop grows quiet. Is that the sound of an eagle overhead? It must just be the wind.

A plump little fellow walks up to the counter. The barista looks down at him.

I quit coffee about 8 months ago [In reply to] Can't Post

I quit coffee last year because it made me feel jittery and unhealthy, in general. I drank coffee for about 12 years before I quit. I had always drank tea as well, but now it's only tea. Well...99% of the time. I do have the occasional coffee, but it's rare.

I do miss coffee, though - it's so yummy.
