To my mind it's your argument which is being too selective. You're deliberately ignoring that careful counterpoint which gives the audience the lonely horror of Bilbo's experience in the deep tunnels intercut with his friends fighting in Goblintown. The story there takes in both elements, not just one. As for a real sense of jeopardy, that's an individual reaction - you don't find it in the Goblintown sequence, I do. Which of us is right? Both of us!
