Who is this? *Credits Scene* Can't Post

I was just kind of curious

It looks like Saruman to me... could this hint towards a possible forest EE scene?

I am obsessed with Saruman - aspiring to know every last detail about him.

I like to think of myself as a Saru-scholar.

Hm... [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't notice that before, it is possible, since on the drawing with Thorin you can see where he and Fili and Kili are buried, a scene we will probably see in the EE. Smile

On the other hand it might be just some unused artwork, but who knows! I hope we will see more of Saruman and WC in the EE. Smile

The spirit of Tolkien himself, as a wizard? [In reply to] Can't Post

I see a vague image of an Istar-style wizard, with a staff. It's too vague to represent any specific wizard character from the movies, and besides, each one already had a portrait elsewhere in the end credits. I don't believe it a coincidence or accident that it is juxtaposed with the author's name. I take it as a tribute to the Professor's brilliance by comparing him to a wizard. That's my guess.

Beren, on the run from the Dark,
Its Sudden-Flame strike
Came down on his life, lived rough,
So rough,
Luthien was out in the glade,
She ran from the Man,
His limbs stayed by chains of love,
Of love.

But Thingol said to hold on,
What have you got?
You can’t just have the Princess, that is asking a lot.
You’ll fetch the jewels from ol’ Morgoth,
for love,
Or have her you’ll not!

Whoa, if that’s your will,
Whoa, this I will fulfill!
In my hand from the Crown, a Silmaril,
Whoa, this I will fulfill!
This I will fulfill!

ooooh! Thank you! [In reply to] Can't Post

I thought that was something like the mouth of a cave.

If they were putting Tolkien as a character, I would think Beren would be more fitting to his wishes, though not really applicable to the movie. I'd guess this is Gandalf based on the staff, and that it's just an image they thought would be cool and fitting for him.

quite welcome! [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, I would agree that most likely they were going for Gandalf, or a Gandalf-like impression. When choosing a Tolkienian wizard to honor the author's name, one should pick the most iconic and most prominent in the story. Cool and fitting indeed.

If I correctly recall from past interviews of Sir Ian McKellen, he purposely based his performance of Gandalf's voice on recordings of Tolkien's readings of his own works.

Or just possibly Gandalf. Can't make out if there's a point on the hat (but the staff looks more like Radagast's)

Gandalf. The top of the staff looks splayed like his tree-root topper. I also see a very blurred character way off to our right.... it looks big and hunched like maybe an orc holding a spear/weapon. It looks like there are some Rings imedded into the tree pic. Down near the bottom of the trunk and above Gandalf's head and slightly to our right. There are more, but those 2 are the most prominent to me.

NEAT PIC! It really captures the Grey Pilgrim's lonely life walking through Middle-earth.
