British autos have boots [In reply to] Can't Post

What's up with that? Trunks are for storage. Boots are for feet!

But then, on the right-side of the pond, we park on the driveways and drive on the parkways, so what do we know?

Since evidence can be adduced and interpreted to corroborate a virtually limitless array of world views, the human challenge is to engage that world view or set of perspectives which brings forth the most valuable, life-enhancing consequences.

horses and ponies [In reply to] Can't Post

here on the east coast, horsemanship styles collide: we have Western which evolved in the American west (courtesy of the Spanish, by way of the Moors), and English which came from the early English colonists....

if you speak Western, the thing that holds the saddle on is a cinch, if you speak English, it's a girth... if you are of too large a girth, you will have to cinch that girth up tighter to keep the saddle from slipping...

The front of an English saddle is the pommel, the front of a western one is a horn (soooo, you either pummel anyone in your way or blow your horn???)...

According to the English, a pony is anything under 14.2, in western riding when I was a kid, anything over 14 hands was a horse. I have no idea what you call the critter between 14 and 14.2...

Western riders race barrels, English ones jump chicken coops.

in both places white horses are usually gray (beginning as a normal horse color, then fading into white as humans do), or grey if you're from the UK, or if you just like classic spellings.

Na 'Aear, na 'Aear! Mýl 'lain nallol, I sûl ribiel a i falf 'loss reviol...
To the sea, to the sea, the white gulls are crying, the wind is blowing and the white foam is flying...

...of Tolkien's habit of providing multiple names for places and people. It was historically accurate in terms of how language within a place or culture evolves, but many can it get confusing at times. :-)
