Here is the 5th draft of our BotFA Geeky Observations List. Once again, it's ripe for a massive edit and organization overhaul, so please look it over and share any editing, corrections, additions you find... fresh eyes are very welcome :) We still need confirmation on some of the Obs.
New additions begin with two asterisks ** and edited/moved items have 4 asterisks ****. I've done this so it's easier to find the new ones.
If Observations (Obs) you've offered don't show up here, there are several reasons. They may have been moved to the Tidbit Geeky Observations List (which is in the works) because they were quite detailed or offered more info than would easily fit on this list; or they're still there, but have been edited/combined with similar Obs; or they were respectfully omitted because there were several similar offerings; or they were a bit critical/nitpicky. I'm sorry if it riles, but these lists don't include nitpicky, negative, inconsistent, or continuity Observations. That's a list for others to build ;) With all the incredible work that has gone into these films, I can't bring myself to include those.
If you want to print this out, I'd strongly suggest cutting and pasting the list, making the font smaller and check to see that it's single-spaced. In my word file, it's 14 pages long with an Arial 9 font!!
Please share any additional Observations you've discovered!!! I'm retiring previous threads for contributions, so please add new ones here. Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has contributed so far! As you can see... we're going nuts!

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Geeky Observations List Updated List #5 1/30/2015
Fire and Water
1. When the Master is leaving as the attack starts, there's someone walking along the boards with a couple of leashed dogs.
2. The first thing we see the Master's men grab is the golden goose.
3. Lake-town's Master has an escape route hidden behind a false bookcase.
4. One of the boxes being carried out is filled with books... which the Master says to leave behind.
5. Tauriel is the first person to see the dragon and hear his words (nice nod to her elvish eyes/ears).
6. Smaug does not breathe any fire on his first pass over Lake-town.
7. The first pass when Smaug breathes fire, he runs just to the right of center of the town... the full length of the town.
8. Smaug's first few passes concentrates the flames deep into the structures leaving some of the taller towers untouched.
9. Some of the Lake-towners try to take some animals with them after it burns.
10. Bard's cell is located in a hollowed out ramp over the canal.
11. **Smaug folds his wings back when he dives towards Lake-town -- very predator looking!
12. **When Smaug is about to hit the water/town, he snaps his wings open and his tail drops down as he puts on his air-brakes!
13. After one fiery pass, Smaug looks off to his right toward the Mountain.
14. The Dwarves escaped from the mountain when Smaug flew away.
15. The Dwarves of Erebor can hear the town's bell and see the attack.
16. Bombur, Ori and Gloin can't watch the attack on Lake-town.
17. Dwalin is pacing while they watch Smaug's attack.
18. When the dwarves are watching Smaug's attack on Lake-town, Nori rests a comforting hand on Ori's shoulder.
19. While the Dwarves and Bilbo watch Smaug's attack, Balin and Bilbo notice Thorin is looking back at the main gate of Erebor and not at Lake-town.
20. The dwarves and Tauriel focus on getting the girls and Bain into the boat first before their own- nice nod to them protecting the kids.
21. CAMEO: Katie Jackson is in a boat in burning Lake-town.
22. Tauriel is calm during the whole evacuation.
23. The Master's barge rams into Tauriel's boat.
24. When the Master's barge collides, Fili nearly falls out.
25. **When the Master is talking about all these people, Alfrid finishes the statement by saying, "they're hardly worth it".
26. **If the Master hadn't just pushed Alfrid off the barge, would Alfrid have been the one to get lassoed by Bard?
27. Bard tears his blanket into shreds to weave into a rope.
28. As Bard's rope lassoes the Master's boat, Bard races to finish tying it off when it catches the bars.
29. Bard grins when he realizes it's the Master he lassoed.
30. Bard breaks into the armory, carefully choosing a bow with heavy string.
31. As Lake-town burns, Bard makes for the bell tower. It's the highest point that he still has a chance to reach.
32. Bard never makes it to the Wind Lance.
33. The eels (moray eels, or a fantasy type of fish) are still decorating the corners of the bell tower!
34. Bard's quiver looks like woven reeds
35. Reaching the tower, Bard holds out the quiver of arrows, releases it as he grabs hold of the arrows and the quiver falls away.
36. Bard draws back and holds the arrow in reverse, with his fingers facing out instead of in... the same as Lurtz.
37. Bard cuts the rope on the bell in the tower presumably to avoid being deafened.
38. The boat that Tauriel, the dwarves and the kids are in is held under an overhang when Smaug fries the houses behind it- likely hiding from him until he's passed overhead and they're clear to go.
39. Smaug is distracted by Bard's attack each time he flies past. He stops breathing fire over the town and dives at Bard's perch instead.
40. Bard hits Smaug with each shot he takes.
41. Kili cries out in excitement when he sees one of Bard's arrows strike the dragon.
42. After Kili yells that Bard hit the mark with regular arrows and Tauriel says that they cannot possibly pierce his hide.
43. Bain is the only one who knows where the Black Arrow is and moves to get it to his father.
44. Bain recognizes where he left the Black Arrow because of the large statue of the Master behind it. The Master's boat, in which he is trying to escape, has a very similar looking figurehead (just smaller).
45. Bain jumps out of the boat with a dangling hook once he sees the boat where he hid the black arrow.
46. **Bofur tries to grab Bain and stop him from leaving the boat.
47. After Bain gets out of the boat to go get the Black Arrow, Oin puts his arm around Tilda
48. Bard shoots his last arrow towards Smaug's eye.
49. Luckily, Bard's last arrow is the one that catches Smaug's attention and makes him stop his attack.
50. Smaug lands on the burning buildings to taunt Bard.
51. The houses of Lake-town cannot seem to hold Smaug's weight- they crumble when he steps on them.
52. Smaug appears to be the one who gives Bard his famous name "Bard the Bowman" when he calls him "bow man".
53. The steps up the side of the tower are broken away when Smaug crashes into it... so there's no way down for Bard and Bain.
54. Smaug calls Bard Bowman and Wretch.
55. Terrified, Bain shows the strength of his father standing as the prop for the Black Arrow while Bard takes aim.
56. As Bard draws back the black arrow under great strain, he's leaning backward so far that he's hovering past the platform and over the long fall into flames.
57. **Bard uses all his strength to draw back the Black Arrow on a broken bow with common string perched on his son's shoulder when it was meant to be fired by the Windlance… a mechanism created for firing the heavy arrow.
58. When Bard sees Smaug's missing scale, he instantly knows that the legend was true and that it was from Girion's shot.
59. **Black Arrow – silence when Bard fires it except for the whistle of the arrow in flight.
60. When Smaug is hit with the Black Arrow it is rotating, as a properly fired arrow should. The two tangs go through his flesh like an apple corer!
61. Smaug doesn't scream or over-react, but when he tries to climb again he fails and is struggling. You can hear him grunting with effort.
62. Smaug tries to shoot flame one more time after he's shot, when he flies up into the air, but he runs out of breath just before he falls.
63. Smaug's tongue quivers, his head drops back, and the flame dies in his chest as he falls.
64. When Smaug dies, the light goes out in his eyes and the last bit of fire visible in his open mouth goes out too.
65. The Master of Lake-town's boat gets squashed by Smaug's body after Bard shoots the dragon with the Black Arrow.
66. Smaug falls on his back, flattening the Master's boat in the process.
67. Braga, the Master's Captain of the Guards, is in the barge and is killed when Smaug falls on them.
68. Bilbo announces to the others that Smaug is dead.
69. A flock of Ravens race to the Mountain after Smaug's demise.
Shores of the Long Lake
70. There are many boats of survivors in the water making their way to the shore.
71. Along the shore of the lake when Alfrid walks out of the water there's a yellow bell pepper floating in the water next to him.
72. Along with the yellow bell pepper, there's a squash and a number of cabbage heads floating around along with a parsnip and a potato floating around the yellow pepper.
73. As Alfrid crawls over the top of the nearly-drowned body, the person is revived and try to lift out of the water sputtering and gurggling.
74. You can see Percy climbing out of the water onto shore.
75. Along the Shores of Long Lake there are at least two dogs that appear to have been saved from Lake-town. A white dog with upright pointy ears in the left foreground of a wide shot, away from the gathering of people, pawing at something in the ground. The other dog is near the end of shore scenes, and appears to be a light grayish wolfhound someone is leading by a rope.
76. Fili doesn't look one bit amused that Kili isn't helping push the boat into the lake and many times he looks back at him and Tauriel when they talk.
77. Kili first said "amrâlimê" and "I know what I feel" and asked her to come with him. She's smiling and looking into his eyes, then suddenly turns her gaze away, the smile vanishes and she says in a tight tone "My lord Legolas", as Legolas has appeared behind her back. It was quite clear that she was about to give into Kili's request, when suddenly they were interrupted by Legolas, her Captain.
78. As the Dwarves leave for the mountain, Bofur is using a shovel as a paddle.
79. Kili looks at Tauriel even as the boat pulls away from the shore.
80. When the four dwarves are leaving, after Kili's first (and highly ineffective) paddle he's looking back at Tauriel, and Fili is looking at him like "could you seriously be less helpful right now?"
81. Percy runs up and cries that Bard killed Smaug, and seems surprised and delighted to find Bard is alive.
82. Is Percy the one ringing the bell... and that's why he said he saw Bard kill Smaug?
83. As the bedraggled Lake-towners try to sort themselves out on shore, there's a husky-mix-looking dog seen at the left lower screen.
84. There's a very large pig (Pikelet?) wandering about on the shore with the refugees.
85. Alfrid has pimples on both sides of his nose... proving he's oily and nasty.
86. Bard rescues Alfrid from lynching, only to shove him back down to the ground when he tries to continue his sucking up ("Shut up Alfrid!").
87. **When Bard is asking where the Master is, you get a full view of the entire burned-out (and still smoking) town behind the crowd.
88. "Have you not had your fill of death," Bard says as he shoves Alfrid down.
89. When Bard gives a load of wood to Alfrid to carry, he turns and dumps it on an old woman already carrying an armload.
90. Some of the animals mingling with the survivors are dogs, a lamb, and a goat.
91. Legolas' dark quiver holds arrows with red fletching.
92. Legolas talks to Bard about others who will come for the gold, but also for the strategic location of the Mountain. Gandalf confirms it later.
93. Legolas is sensing the danger that's coming, like he did at Tol Brandir years later.
94. Legolas trusts Bard enough to confide his suspicions with him.
95. The messenger from Thranduil addresses Lord Legolas.
96. When Tauriel is banished and Legolas refuses to go without her, she reminds him that Thranduil is his King (that he must go).
97. Legolas and Tauriel ride for Gundabad to verify Legolas's suspicions about Bolg.
98. Legolas rides the same horse he rode to Lake-town.
99. **As Bard says “Take only what you need”, the camera shot is of this large kunekune pig – now be on a leash.
100.The injured from the dragon's attack are carried to Dale on hammocks made out of blankets tied around long felled logs.
Remaining Dwarves Make For Erebor
101.Fili is the one who leads the Lake-town four to Erebor, and he also seems to know his way around the Mountain- part of his education and grooming as heir, no doubt.
102.As the 4 Dwarves arrive at Erebor, they walk through the broken entrance and past a huge golden bell lying to one side.
103.When the four first enter Erebor, Bofur immediately calls for his brother and cousin.
104.Bilbo remembers the moment with Smaug when he grabbed the Arkenstone and ran.
105.Bilbo's nose twitches as he remembers what Smaug said about the Arkenstone driving Thorin mad.
106.When the dwarves enter through the broken gate, there's a huge bell with statues of Dwarves mounted around the outside nearly lying on the ground.
107.Bilbo is slightly affected by the Dragon-sickness as he tries to stop Fili, Kili, Bofur and Oin from going inside.
108.Bilbo's description of Thorin's condition sounds like Sam talking to Frodo on the River. He's not sleeping. He barely eats.
109.Fili is the first to move when Bilbo warns them that Thorin's out of his mind.
110.Kili is slightly more confused about the warning and effect of the dragon-sickness.
111.As Kili goes to follow Fili down the stairs to the treasure hall, he grimaces and reaches for his injured leg... limping a bit.
112.The soundtrack frequently plays Smaug's theme even long after his death.
113.Thorin throws a red jewel at Fili when they first arrive in Erebor and see him- he's got a good arm!
114.Thorin addresses Fili and Kili as sister-sons, not acknowledging Oin or Bofur.
115.When Thorin does his "sister-sons" speech, Fili's eyes widen as far as they go in complete shock, but also worry and fear. He knows EXACTLY what sickness Bilbo meant, and has more than heard of Thror's dragon-sickness. He's terrified to see the dragon sickness in Thorin.
116.Fili recognize the same sickness that took Thror, and it utterly terrifies him to see that in Thorin.
117.Thorin isn't even glad to see Fili, Kili, Bofur and Oin. He's completely preoccupied with the treasure.
118.Balin and Dwalin are clearly in living quarters when the four dwarves from Lake-town reunite with them.
119.Balin is sitting at a table that looks like it was left in mid-meal when Smaug attacked.
120.**This is very reminiscent of the abandoned hall of feasting in THE HOBBIT called the Great Chamber of Thror.
121.When the 4 Dwarves finally reach the rest of the Company, there's much laughter and hugging.
122.When the four reunite with those in Erebor, the "brothers" hug- Bofur and Bombur hug, Gloin and Oin, and everyone hugs Fili and Kili, and they're all laughing.
123. Through all three movies we have never seen Bilbo eat or drink a single thing once. A feat for a Hobbit.
· Bilbo is preparing himself fish in AUJ, but the doorbell rang before he could eat it.
· He took a biscuit from the plate he gives to Dwalin.
· He doesn't eat at the camp when he takes food to Fili and Kili, at the Rivendell table, Beorn's table, Thranduil's caves, or Bard's table...
· Bilbo is fed by Alfrid by Gandalf's order, but we don't see it.
124. While the Dwarves search everywhere for the Arkenstone, Bilbo sits alone and looks at the Stone he had hidden in his pocket.
125. The Arkenstone appears to be one large radiant beautiful fire opal. Could this be a Silmaril?
126. When everyone is looking for the Arkenstone, someone says, "That stone could be anywhere!" It sounds like Oin.
Guardians of the Three
127. A weakened Gandalf chants breathlessly as Radagast, far away, is also chanting.
128. Radagast was most definitely back home when he was chanting. He followed Gandalf's instructions well (he did get the Lady Galadriel, and he was also told not to return).
129. **The wizardly incantations, as with Radagast's over Sebastian in AUJ ('Now, hear the words of my voice: free [the afflicted] from all curse' or bondage), seem to be a kind of petition to Middle-earth's Ilúvatar, the All-Father of creation.
130. Every time "The Necromancer" encounters a Wizard, he gets stronger. He begins to form when Radagast is there in AUJ, then grows in power when fighting with Gandalf in DoS. In BotFA, Gandalf is nearly spent and the Nazgul and the Necromancer are stronger.
131. It looks like Gandalf is focusing on his own hand gripping the side of his cage.
132. There's a stunning contrast of Galadriel's white hand (wearing Nenya) and bare feet as she walks flowing white across the Fortress' stone and iron ruin.
133. Galadriel wears Nenya on the middle finger of her right hand (just like in FOTR). It is also the hand which later holds the phial.
134. **When Galadriel enters Dol Guldur and make her way to where Gandalf is being held, as we see that first full shot of her, gleaming white, we hear a short snatch of the Lothlorien theme.
135. Galadriel is wearing a loosely-woven, long cloak over her gown.
136. Galadriel's power shows as she saves Gandalf from the Orc.
137. Galadriel's spell travels across the sky.
138. Galadriel carries Gandalf in her arms.
139. Gandalf is wearing Narya on his left hand, middle finger when Galadriel was rescuing him!!!
140. When Galadriel sites the part of the Ringspell of 9 for Mortal Man, the Nazgul rise.
141. The Nine appear and challenge Galadriel.
142. The Ringwraiths in the trailer/clip we have seen look very familiar:
Ringwraiths 1; Ringwraiths 2. One looks like an Easterling.
143. Carrying Gandalf, a weakening Galadriel drops down onto the platform of a headless statue.
144. There is a headless statue holding an orb in its extended hand... a palantir?
145. As the Nine surround Galadriel and Gandalf, you can see the statue (above them) holding what we suspect to be a Palantir. We saw the same item in last year’s Desolation of Smaug banner until that poster was edited to remove the Palantir from the statue’s hand.
146. Elrond is in full battle armour and Saruman has brought his staff.
147. Elrond wields Hadhafang (aka Arwen's sword) to great effect while fighting the nine kings/wraiths. Arwen later wields it -- presumably after it was given her by Elrond -- while taunting the nine Black Riders.
148. Sauron and all the Nine are present at Dol Guldur. We also see the keepers of the Three: Elrond (Vilya), Galadriel (Nenya), and Gandalf (Narya).
149. The Seven [Dwarf Rings] are not represented at all in any way. Thrain would be the only opportunity to legitimately do so, and of course his storyline ends up being dealt with in the Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition.
150. Elrond says to the Nazgul, "You should have Stayed Dead."
151. As Elrond and Saruman strike the spectral Nazgul, the Wraiths fall and immediately reform and attack again.
152. As Elrond and Saruman fight, the Nine react like they have form; but as soon as they fall, their dissolve and reform to fight again.
153. As the Nazgul begin to fight Elrond and Saruman, all of Galadriel's attention is on Gandalf.
154. Galadriel earnestly calls to Mithrandir to come back, and kisses his forehead... which brings him back.
155. A weak and shaken Gandalf immediately sounds the alarm, "He's here." Sadly, Galadriel answers, "Yes. The darkness has returned."
156. **Galadriel has tears in her eyes when she says, "Yes. The evil has returned."
157. ****During the Dol Guldur scene Galadriel tells Elrond that 'the spirit of Sauron endured', which is word for word what Gandalf tells Frodo at the start of Fellowship.
158. The longer Galadriel is at Dol Guldur, the weaker she becomes.
159. The look on Galadriel's face when Gandalf takes her by the arm and begs her to come with him... it's the same pained look Frodo gives to Sam as he hangs by one hand over the lava and wants to let go... that he won't make it.
160. Galadriel tells Radagast Gandalf cannot remain here; it's draining his life. It seems to be draining hers, too, as she lies unmoving on the ground, then rises in powerful anger.
161. Radagast is startled when a transforming Galadriel shouts at him to GO!
162. The Nine stop fighting and disappear just before Sauron appears.
163. When Sauron appears and the 9 rise, Elrond is shaking and Saruman is halting as he raises his hand against them.
164. At one moment, Galadriel is completely spent, and the next moment she's in full "beautiful and terrible" mode shown at the Mirror of Galadriel with Frodo years later.
165. Galadriel is holding the Light of Earendil (phial) while fighting off Sauron and the Nazgul.
166. Galadriel sends Sauron and the 9 into the Void. "You have no power here, servant of Morgoth.... nameless, faceless, formless. "Go back to the void from whence you came."
167. When Galadriel speaks to Sauron, she says 'You have no power here' in very much the same intonation that Theoden uses to Gandalf in TTT when he's controlled/possessed by Saruman.
168. Galadriel's final impact is so powerful it rocks Elrond and Saruman.
169. When Sauron is banished, you can clearly see his light move southeast toward Mordor.
170. Elrond is stunned by Galadriel's presence.
171. Elrond is wearing the Ring Vilya on the middle finger of his right hand.
172. When Gandalf and Radagast stop and look back, Gandalf is sitting up, is wearing his hat and holds Glamdring.
173. Gandalf begins to regain his strength as soon as Radagast carries him to safety away from the Fortress.
174. Radagast's Rhosgobel Rabbits are exhausted from running from his home to Dol Guldur then back to his home. One has flopped over onto his back or the bunny was playful. His leg was kicking a bit--like he was scratching his back.
175. There are 12 Rhosgobel rabbits pulling Radagast's sled.
176. The flopped bunny is doing what sled dogs do when you stop... roll around on the ground because it feels so good!
177. When Gandalf and Radagast arrive at the shack and Gandalf says, "I need a horse..." you can see Beorn's horse behind them... ready to go and watching the Wizard.
178. Gandalf tells Radagast to summon all birds and beasts for help.
The Ruins of Dale
179. Bilbo carries the acorn from Beorn's garden like Sam carried the box of salt through their journey. It's hobbity to bring a bit of home. In this case, it's something from his journey for his home... to help him remember.
180. Beorn would be so pleased if he knew Bilbo counted an acorn from his garden as a treasure to take back to the Shire and his garden.
181. Bilbo carries in his pocket his contract, the Ring, Thrór's map, an acorn, and the Arkenstone, but no hankie.
182. As the Lake-town refugees arrive at Dale, they cover their noses and grimace at the odor.
183. There are skeletons strewn throughout Dale's ruins.
184. Some of the very old folks from Lake-town looked as if they were remembering their childhood when entering Dale.
185. Sad little shop of the ruined Dale, with the broken roundabout, and some skeletal remains from Smaug's destruction.
186. The broken Dale carousel has figures of a chicken, a rabbit, a peacock and a ram.
187. It looks like there might be 2 carousels. One is broken and burned, the other is broken but whiter and unburned. It's most visible when Thranduil makes to leave Dale.
188. When Alfrid sees smoke rising, they run to the mountain and find out that Thorin's company survived when they see two large cisterns filled with fire. The porch light?
189. The braziers are lit (fires on porch)
190. The first sign of occupation in Dale is shown by fires in the night.
191. Alfrid has night watch, and he clearly is very tired, yet somehow he misses an elf army arriving.
192. Percy tells Bard they may not have enough food,
193. Kili helps steady what appears to be a statue's head when they are trying to build up the wall.
194. The dwarves seem to work all night to build their wall.
195. Gloin is the only one using a hammer and chisel.
196. The Dwarves are using levers, pulleys and brute strength to build the blockade.
197. When the dwarves build the wall, they conveniently construct a staircase in it that zig-zags up and down to reach the top, as well as battlements to provide cover for attack.
198. In the middle of the rock wall, there is the head of a statue imbedded in the structure.
199. The battlements have a few holes down at eye level—works well during Bard's negotiation attempt.
200. **The top of the barricade is in a zigzag design, reflected in much of the dwarf costuming and design., (eg Thror’s beard jewelry).
201. Kili is hauling a cart with stones in it, and Bilbo seems to be steering it from behind. A nice nod to Bilbo not being as strong as the dwarves.
202. The cart Kili is pulling to build up the wall has smaller stones in it, rather than larger. A good indication Bilbo was helping him.
203. Kili pleads with Thorin for the sake of the Lake-town survivors.
204. Kili has more compassion and care for Lake-town since Bard's family took them in and helped him get well.
205. Thorin holds up the white gems of Lasgalen that Thranduil wants. Thranduil designed the necklace for his wife and "in his mind it was the last thing he owned that reminded him of his dead wife". [see more in Tidbits]
206. **When Thorin lifts up the necklace, you can see a blond hair caught in the latch.
207. When Thorin picks up the necklace of white gems, he's in the counting room - you can see the gold coins in stacks on tables (the counting room is a scene that was filmed, and will hopefully be in the EE).
208. The Stones of Lasgalen: Lasgalen means "greenleaves", and Legolas is referred to as Legolas Greenleaf.
209. **The Elvenking Thranduil later (perhaps in memory of his wife and son?) renames Mirkwood after the War of the Ring: Eryn Lasgalen, or 'Wood of Greenleaves'.
210. Tauriel means "Daughter of the Forest"
211. Thorin wears 3 rings on each hand... on the thumbs and the middle & ring fingers.
212. In the morning, you can hear one of the Dwarves (Gloin?) say, "Not a bad night's work!"
213. **When Thorin makes his way through the dwarves to the rampart to speak with Bard, Fili is the only he specifically says to come with him.
The Gathering of the Clouds
214. Thranduil's elk has a long, diagonal scar across the top of his muzzle and on the left side of its face.
215. The Dale armory is still intact. The townsfolk arm themselves to fight.
216. When dwarves in Erebor and humans in Dale are preparing for battle, the weapons in both places are covered in cobwebs, which shows how long it has been since they have last been needed or mended.
217. Lake-town men are being taught how to fight.
218. Part of the Battle of The Five armies will be in Dale.
219. The entire company follows Thorin down from the wall and witnesses Bard and Thorin's conversation through the hole in the stone wall.
220. Bilbo tries to remind Thorin that he gave his word at Lake-town... and that Bilbo gave them his word, too.
221. When the Company stands at the rampart, you can see the coil of rope on the ground nearby that Bilbo eventually uses to leave.
Mithril
222. When the dwarves are wearing their ceremonial armour on the walls of Erebor, Gloin is wearing Gimli's helmet from LOTR! Not only did he have Gimli's axe in AUJ, but he passed on this helmet to his son too. It's a nice detail that ties to LOTR without getting in the way.
223. Thorin holds up the mithril shirt and talks about it the same way Bilbo talks about it to Frodo in Rivendell.
224. Thorin calls the mithril vest silver-steel.
225. The Dwarves are happy to see Bilbo try on his Mithril-vest (shirt).
226. Bilbo takes off his coat and vest before putting on the Mithril shirt. He wears the vest under his vest.
227. Bilbo comments that he looks ridiculous in the mithril shirt, however all the dwarves are staring at him in wonder- probably because, unlike him, they DO know how much that shirt is worth.
228. Each column leading from the armory has a standing set of armour against it.
229. **When Thorin whispers to Bilbo that he knows someone has the Arkenstone (after getting the Mithril shirt) (betrayed by my own kin), Bilbo starts breathing hard and cannot look Thorin in the eye... believing that he's been found out.
230. **Every time Bilbo is around someone he's hiding information from while they talk about their concerns (like Thorin and the Arkenstone), he cannot look them in the eye and acts very guilty.
231. ****Thorin, accusing one of he Dwarves of being false, talks to Bilbo about the gold the same way Smaug did. It's mine/ours and mine/ours alone.
232. ****Thorin begins to sound like Smaug as his lust and paranoia grow.
233. **Thorin's words are identical to Smaug's in DoS: 'I will not part with a single coin...not one piece of it.'
234. The Dwarves are up all night blockading the entrance, and are up all night again preparing their armour for war.
235. Thorin has the same hair clasps at the end as Kili does- just like in the previous two movies (but different clasps).
236. Kili's breastplate (the showy armor) is made of silver, not gold.

A Thief in the Night
247. When Balin asks Thorin if he doubts anyone's loyalty, Bilbo cannot look Thorin in the eye.

249. ****Balin is so upset with Thorin; he can't look at him when they're speaking and Dwalin looks at Thorin in disbelief.

251. In the place where Balin is sitting and weeping, which looks like a library or office, there is an inkwell with the quill still in it behind him.
252. Balin's little raise of his eyebrows when he mentions it would be better if the Arkenstone remained unfound certainly suggested that he suspected Bilbo may have had some idea of its whereabouts.
253. Balin's expression during his and Bilbo's conversation about whether or not the Arkenstone will drive Thorin even more mad clearly shows that Balin knows Bilbo has it.
254. **Bilbo trusts Balin so much he all but tells him that he (Bilbo) has the Arkenstone.
255. Balin tells Bilbo the Arkenstone bestows power on he who wields it. While Bilbo has the stone, what power is bestowed? The power not to get caught?

Parlay

269. How did Thorin know Bard was the Dragon-slayer? Did that same Raven tell him?
270. **The Raven is a nod to Tolkien's long-lived 'Roäc son of Carc', who informs Thorin & Company of the dragon-slaying exploits of Bard the Bowman and flies to the Iron Hills to recruit the aid of Dain Ironfoot and his dwarven warriors.
271. When the head of the statue crashes down and breaks Erebor's bridge, the water is several meters below the bridge. When Bilbo escapes with the Arkenstone, the water level is right up with the bridge, and he doesn't sink. Maybe the rocks from the fallen statue fills it in or creates a dam?

273. Gandalf rides to Dale on Beorn's horse he rode to the High Fells.
274. Gandalf's horse looks like a Clydesdale.

282. Bard is now wearing a long blue coat and chainmail.
283. Gandalf explains the strategic importance of Erebor to the enemy. That it's the gateway to Angmar of the North.
284. Gandalf is puffing hard (in anger) on his pipe as Thranduil says he'll finish what Gandalf has started.
285. To save Thorin from the madness of the Arkenstone, Bilbo decides to take it away and use it as a way to end the war with men and elves.
286. Bilbo slips down a rope and runs to Dale with the Arkenstone.
287. As Bilbo goes down the side of the front of Erebor's gates on the rope, there appear to be twigs, etc., from birds' nests in the cracks of the wall.
288. Bilbo lands on the stone head the Dwarves just dropped into the river to break the bridge leading to the gate.
289. Bilbo tiptoes through Dale despite not wearing the ring- very hobbity!
290. **The surviving Lake-town Guards can be seen sitting around with the other survivors.

296. Gandalf's staff is leaning up against the wall behind him as Bilbo talks to Thranduil and Bard.
297. The Arkenstone is wrapped in a burgundy-red, kingly-coloured cloth. It looks suspiciously like the fabric from Balin's clothing, including the sigil stamped on it.
298. Bilbo places the covered Arkenstone onto a map of the Mountain.
299. Bilbo fulfills his promise to Bard/Lake-town by giving them the Arkenstone.
300. Bilbo described dwarves as obstinate, pig-headed, stubborn, secretive, difficult, suspicious, brave and kind... and they have the worse manners; but are loyal to a fault.
301. Gandalf warns Bilbo that he should fear Thorin. Even Balin warns him of the danger of Thorin's love for the Arkenstone. Still... Bilbo trusts him. So when Bilbo confesses what he did with the Arkenstone, he's shocked when Thorin goes to throw him from the ramparts.
302. When the elves aim their bows at the dwarves after Thorin threatens Thranduil with his bow, the dwarves (who had been yelling about the Arkenstone being stolen seconds before) all duck behind the battlements- except for Thorin, who merely smirks.
303. As the Dwarves laugh at the Elves and Thorin threatens to shoot Thranduil, all the Elf-king does is barely move, and the Elf-army draw their bows in unison. Another slight move, and they return to rest position and re-sheath their arrows.
304. Dori, Nori and Ori all have similar looking helmets once they put on their armour.
305. ****Other Dwarves wearing helmets are Bombur, Gloin, Thorin, and Oin.
306. Dwarves not wearing helmets: Fili, Kili, Bifur, Bofur, and Balin.
307. Thranduil's crown has a small, white stone in the center.
308. Bard is blasé as he tosses the Arkenstone into the air with one hand.
309. Thranduil and Bard are shocked to hear Bilbo confess to Thorin on the ramparts.
310. While Bilbo tells Thorin why he took the Arkenstone and how he has changed, most of the Dwarves aren't looking at Bilbo, they're watching Thorin apprehensively.
311. There's a twitch under Thorin's eye as he comprehends what Bilbo has said.
312. Tears glitter in Thorin's eyes when he confronts Bilbo after the hobbit admits giving the Arkenstone away.
313. Thorin calls Bilbo a Miserable Rat... that "You have no claim over me!"
314. Thorin calls Bilbo "thief" and "Shire rat".
315. The Dwarves refuse to attack Bilbo, throwing Thorin into a rage. Fili says No!
316. Thorin yanks Fili when he's trying to get someone to toss Bilbo over the ramparts, but Fili roughly yanks his arm out of Thorin's grasp.
317. **Thorin grabs Fili even though Kili closer.
318. When Thorin grabs Fili to make him throw Bilbo over, it looks like Balin is trying to grab Fili as well, probably to try and keep Thorin from grabbing him.
319. **When Thorin orders the others to throw Bilbo from the wall, they back away. When he says he'll do it himself, Fili and others intervene.
320. **Bard looks horrified and even Thranduil looks rather shocked.
321. As Thorin threatens to throw Bilbo over the ramparts, Gandalf calls out to him not to damage his Burglar.
322. The big voice Gandalf uses in AUJ in Bag End to end the Dwarves' quarrel is the same one he uses here to ask Thorin not to damage his Burglar.
323. When Gandalf reminds Thorin of who he is at the gates of Erebor, Thorin looks a little sad and taken aback after Gandalf's speech.
324. Fili helps a shaken Bilbo down and Bofur scoots him away towards the rope.
325. The rope Bilbo used to escape Erebor with the Arkenstone is still there, and tied to a hook on the wall, when he escapes the second time from Thorin's wrath.
326. Gandalf looks towards the base of the barricade to see that Bilbo has made it down the rope.
The Clouds Burst
327. The Raven returns and talks to Thorin as an upset Balin looks on.
328. Dain and his army pass near Ravenhill as they approach Erebor.
329. Dain rides up to the line of Elves and taunts them about "just sodding off".
330. Dain has boar-tusks woven into his beard.
331. Bilbo has run and caught up with Gandalf.
332. **Gandalf bows to Dain.
333. ****Bilbo asks Gandalf a very Bagginsish question when he wonders if they're in a safe place to stand... in the middle of the battle.
334. When Dain readies to charge the Elves, the front line of Elven archers shift back while the shield-wielding Elves move forward.
335. There are women standing at the frontline of the Lake-town fighters.
336. The Were-worms break through the mountain wall opposite Azog's position on Ravenhill.
337. Dain calls out in frustration when the were-worms appear, "Oh, come on!" just like Bilbo did when he caught his foot on the spider web after coming down from seeing the butterflies of Mirkwood.
338. The trebuchet trolls are called War Beasts by Azog.
339. Does Azog know that his Master, Sauron, is out of power?
340. When the dwarves of the Iron Hills make their shield wall, they make it two layers high. The shields form a nearly solid wall this way.
341. There are 4 more rows of Dwarves crouched behind the stacked shields.
342. The first Dwarf Captain to call out orders looks like Kiran Shah.
343. The Elves leap over to top of the Dwarven shields, springing from the backs of the crouched Dwarves, and attack the charging Orcs.
344. The beautiful 'Ironfoot' theme starts playing right after the elves have joined the battle by jumping over the dwarves.
345. Thranduil has no choice but to fight. His army and he are caught between the gate of Erebor and the Orc army.
346. The ogre bangs its club against the floor in order to command the trebuchet trolls to let go of their boulder barrage against Dale.
347. Bard races for Dale on horseback across the bridge... riding parallel to the juggernaut troll with a concrete wedge on his head.
348. Later, Thranduil rides across the same bridge as he and his elk clear the way for his army following behind.
349. The orcs are not at the gate of Erebor. They're focusing their fight on Dale and the Elves.
350. In the Thranduil battle clip his megaloceros (or moose- whatever he's riding) is knocking orcs with its antlers as he's fighting on top of it.
351. Fili immediately wishes to charge out of Erebor when the orcs show up and calls the others to follow him, but Thorin overrules him and says no.
352. Percy becomes Bard's second as he moves on Bard's orders several times and is always nearby to help.
353. Percy leads archers to the Eastern parapet.
354. A townie runs past Bard and his fighters proclaiming that Stone Street has fallen!" The Orcs have taken Stone Street! The market is overrun!" [It's the name of Jackson's studio's in Miramar, Wellington]
355. CAMEO: Billy Jackson as one of the townsfolk standing ready to charge the Market with Bard. He's very tall, and he's wearing a maroon-ish stocking cap with a beige-ish pattern at Bard's left shoulder as he faces the camera... er... town.
356. Bain saves his sisters multiple times as he strikes orc attacks.
357. The sword that Bard's son Bain uses has a round pommel that is reminiscent of the ones seen in Rohan, albeit without the horse motifs associated with that culture.
358. Bard rides a wagon down the hilly street, building up speed to attack the troll about to kill his children.
359. Bard's children are always quick to react during attacks. Bard calls out for them to duck and they drop instantly while the wagon he's riding bounces over the top of them.
360. ****Alfrid gives the sword Bard handed him back to Bain when he leads them to the great hall.
361. While Alfrid is knocking down townsfolk to get to the Great Hall, Bain calls out to everyone to make for the Great Hall.
362. Thranduil rides to Dale. He could have stayed on the field. Elves follow him there to fight in the streets.
363. Thranduil rides at a cluster of Orcs on the bridge, his elk collects them all in its horns and Thranduil beheads the lot of them.
364. As Thranduil rides through the gate after beheading the Orcs, his elk is shot twice in the neck and falls dead.
365. Thranduil is left alone and on foot to fight another hoard of Orcs until his army catches up with him.
366. ****Bard shoots Alfrid's attacking troll through the outstretched, deformed hand and into its chest.
367. Thorin wants to hide deeper in the halls to save the gold whereas before, when they found the remains in the western guard room, he said he didn’t want to get caught like a badger in a hole. "I will not die like this. Cowering, clawing for breath."
368. Dwalin challenges Thorin who accuses one of the Dwarves of being false.
369. You can see in his eyes what is going on with Thorin's madness.
370. When Thorin is threatening to kill Dwalin, you can hear tears and wavering in his voice- the dragon sick Thorin arguing with the sane Thorin- and one almost wonders if the sane one sent Dwalin away so the dragon sick Thorin wouldn't kill him.
371. Thorin begins his vision of the gold consuming him after Dwalin... his closest comrade and confidant... confronts him. It starts Thorin's return to sanity.
372. Thorin walks on the golden floor created during their battle with Smaug, and he sees himself consumed by the gold.
373. There's a phantom Smaug swimming round Thorin as he brooded there.
374. Thorin sees himself as drowned by the gold – which is what he was trying to do to Smaug.
375. Thorin is still wearing his crown after telling them to stand down, but not his golden armor, and none of the other dwarves are wearing theirs either - they're all just in chain mail after that.
376. When Thorin comes back to his senses, the first thing he does is cast off the crown of Thror, thus separating Thorin from his grandfather.
377. Once they realized Thorin wouldn't let them go to war, the Dwarves took off their armour.
378. Nori rests a comforting hand on Dori's shoulder just before the cured Thorin returns to the Company. He did the same gesture with Ori during Smaug's attack.
379. Thorin returns to the Dwarves without his armour, robe or crown. His face is calm, the torment gone. Once again, he's Thorin Oakenshield.
380. Thorin does a soft head-butt with Kili.
381. When Thorin Oakenshield asks, "Will you follow me, one last time?" the Dwarves soundlessly stand without hesitation and Fili is nodding.
382. Oin's ear-trumpet is still misshapen.
383. Orcs march to drums and attacks at sound of horns. [[CONFIRM]]
384. Bombur blows the Erebor horn to signal the charge of the company similar to Gimli blowing the Horn of Helm Hammerhand on the Two Towers.
385. **Bombur has only just sounded the horn for the company charge: allowing him absolutely no time to 'regroup' and be with the others in their charge from Erebor.
386. A giant golden bell knocks out the blocked entrance to the Dwarven Realm.
387. The bell has statues of dwarves mounted all around the exterior.
388. The bell is still there when they rush out of the mountain. It's hard to see because it is swinging backward at that point.
389. The debris from the broken door creates a bridge for the Company to charge across.
390. When Thorin and Company charge from the gate, Dain cries out, "To the king!" and his army joins the charge.
391. As the company charges out of Erebor, Dain's ranks immediately part for them, then gather again behind them so the charge formation (from above) ends up looking like a raven in flight, with Thorin as the beak and Dain's soldiers as the wings.
392. The 'flying wedge' is a tactic so useful it was banned in American football.
393. Bombur isn't among the Company as the dwarves charge out of Erebor. He's possibly left behind to guard the gate.
394. The use of Bells and horns are big in this movie. We hear the alarm Bell in the Lake-town tower and a bell is used to break down the Erebor wall signalling the Company forth.
395. Trolls were fitted with all manner of siege technology: from catapults to a battering ram helmet to wrecking-ball/morning-star type things apparently surgically attached in place of their hands.
396. Some battle trolls wore the skulls of some larger creatures as helmets.
397. As a Troll races on the bridge to Dale followed by a group of Orcs, it is shot and falls backward onto the Orcs, crushing them.
398. The woman (Hilda Bianca) who saw the Dwarves as they secretly came to Lake-town is now a heroine as she intercedes in the Battle of Dale and calls the women to fight as well.
399. When the pot/urn full of coins and other treasures is knocked over and Alfrid notices it, it looks like there's an old-school NZ 20c piece in the coins.
400. The Dwarves, Elves, and Men were barely hanging on, trying to hold their own against the Azog's army before the Gate.
401. All the closeups of fallen warriors (including fallen Elves) show them in pools of red blood.
402. Tauriel is not the only Elvish female warrior.
403. When Dain's ride is killed, he's thrown free with his helmet coming off to reveal his "Flaming Red Hair".
404. Dain has a red mohawk, which is only visible when his helm falls off.
405. Dain head butts many during the fighting. Should be called Dain Hammerhead.
406. The mountain goats/rams appear between the spaces of Dain's army as they marched towards Erebor.
407. The Battle sheep (ram tough) gallop up the side of the cliffs the way you'd expect... now there's a warhorse!
408. Legolas and Tauriel attack orcs as they ride the streets of Dale and mows them down with his horse.
409. Gandalf calls out to Legolas when he arrives, calling him "Legolas Greenleaf".
410. As Legolas and Tauriel ride up, a woman steps forward and takes the reins of Legolas' horse.
411. Tauriel hears Bilbo cry out that Thorin, Kili and the others are on Ravenhill that will soon be overrun with Gundabad Orcs.
412. Thranduil threatens to kill Tauriel when she defies him and blocks his way.
413. ****How did Thranduil know Tauriel loved Kili? Legolas had likely, very early on, spoken to his father of his Mirkwood captain's scandalous attraction to the Dwarven prince (if his lingering jealous glare in the DOS prison scene is any indication).
414. Legolas stops Thranduil from threatening Tauriel and tells his father if he harms Tauriel, he'll have to kill him, too.
415. Thranduil looks shocked when Legolas says if he (Thranduil) harms Tauriel that he'd have to kill him (Legolas), too. Perhaps Thranduil said the same thing to someone in defense of his wife long ago.
416. Legolas tells Tauriel he will go with her to Ravenhill, knowing why she wants to go and how she feels about Kili.
Ravenhill
417. Azog works a system of wing-shaped flag signals to direct the army.
418. There a long signal horn with a monstrous mouth –shaped opening.
419. Bilbo reveals a clue of what Gandalf suspects (that he has a magic Ring) when the Hobbit insists he will not be seen when he goes to Ravenhill to warn Thorin.
420. **** Against Gandalf's wishes, Bilbo runs to Ravenhill to warn Thorin and Dwalin that Gundabad orcs are coming.
421. As Bilbo runs through the fighting wearing the Ring, he dodges the various fighting figures. The Elves are glowing white while the Orcs are dark and the men are shadows.
422. Bilbo does not wear the Ring unless he has no choice. The only time he wears it in BoFA is when he runs to Ravenhill to warn Thorin. Even then, he hesitates for an instant before putting it on.
423. Thorin tells Fili and Kili to search the tower, but not to engage… which they engage anyway.
424. **The tone Thorin uses is that of a leader, but it's also gentle like a father.
425. Fili and Kili both hear something in the upper corridor. Knowing there is something or someone up there Fili sends Kili to the lower hall out of harms way and explores the upper hall himself; which puts a different perspective on Fili's capture and death.
426. When Fili and Kili heard noises in the tower, Kili wanted to engage, but Fili stopped him and sent him down to the lower levels instead.
427. Fili pats Kili's heart when he sends him away.
428. **Kili seems to react straight away to situations, but Fili often has a little pause and think before he moves.
429. Sting glows blue shortly after Bilbo arrives signalling the Orcs about to come over the top of the stairs.
430. Thorin heeds Bilbo's warning and realizes it's a trap.
431. In the battle of Ravenhill, Thorin is wearing the square bluish ring he wore in the earlier movies over top of his glove.
432. The drum beats heard as Fili and Kili investigate Ravenhill is similar to the drum beats heard when Pippin knocked over the skeleton in the well in Moria.
433. Fili's face is very, very pale when he is dragged out by Azog right before his execution.
434. As Fili being dragged out by Azog, you can see blood on the side of his face and a bruise on the other side. He clearly fought back before being overwhelmed.
435. Thorin almost imperceptibly shakes his head no at what is about to happen to Fili.
436. Dwalin looks away--he can't bear to watch him die. Dwalin is as much of an uncle (than cousin) to them as Thorin is.
437. Fili's final words are "Go!" and then "Run!" Even though he knows he's about to die, his last concern is urging those he loves to save themselves from the trap they're in.
438. The look that Thorin gives Fili is one of love and respect, acknowledging an heir of Durin who is dying a brave and honorable death.
439. Fili died with dignity. He also died a selfless death. There he is unarmed, in the hands of an unmerciful enemy, totally out of reach from anyone who could possibly help him, and with his last breath he tells those he cares about most to "run"... knowing it's a trap. Even as he's about to die, he's still thinking of others before himself.
440. Fili's is not a stereotypical death of a hero, fighting with a sword in his hand. Courage isn't always gained through battle. More often it is gained through love, loyalty, and self-sacrifice.
441. ** Remember that back at the Party in Bag End, Fili is the one who says, "We may be few in number, but we're fighters -- to the last dwarf!" He's true to his word -- fighting alone until he's disarmed and helpless. And then he uses his last seconds to urge his friends to flee Azog's trap.
442. Fili's body falls at Kili's feet, causing the younger to go in a rage over his brother's death.
443. Azog always postures defiantly when he knows he's hurt Thorin.
444. Kili proves his Mother's fear that he's reckless is true as he races to attack his brother's killer.
445. Fili being killed is the first death Bilbo witnesses of someone he cares about. He stumbles around rather out of it for a good while as a result unlike Thorin and Dwalin.
446. To get to Ravenhill Legolas grabs the feet of a passing bat and is holding on with his hands (he's rightside up) but as he gets to the Ravenhill tower we see the bat holding on to Legolas' feet (he's upside down). Legolas' hands are free to shoot the bat and jump to safety.
447. **Azog is striking at Thorin and there's a brief flash of sparks as their weapons meet, then Thorin tumbles back onto the ice. In the next shot, Thorin only has half a sword.
448. **You can see Thorin fighting the Orcs on the ice with the broken sword until he gets Orcrist back.
449. Tauriel kicks Bolg in the groin when he lifts her by the neck. Going by his reaction, that skull codpiece wasn't very effective!
450. During his fight with Tauriel, Bolg throws her against the rocks several times.
451. When Bolg fights the Elves, he prefers to lift and throw them, often one-handed, which ties in with the idea that they're light for their size.
452. You can hear Kili's footsteps as he runs and jumps onto Bolg.
453. Bolg uses both hands and considerable effort to throw Kili off his shoulders, then switches to punching and stabbing him once he's down.
454. Kili tries to mouth something to Tauriel when he's dying, but he seems to repeat it three times, as though he cannot quite get it out.
455. Bolg kills Kili with the end of the handle on his club, which is shaped like a swordpoint.
456. After Kili falls, you can see his leg is still bandaged.
457. Fili is stabbed in the back (by Azog), while Kili is stabbed in the chest (by Bolg).
458. After his uncle spent most of his life hating the elves for being unwilling to aid his people, the fact that Kili died defending an elf shows how Kili was unwilling to let revenge and hate rule him. A character trait of his straight from the book.
459. When all around them [others] were being selfish in one way or another at some point during this whole fiasco, they [Fili and Kili] didn't show a SHRED of that nasty trait.
460. Fili and Kili chose to die defending those they loved with sword and shield; not because Thorin was their king, but because he was their uncle (Tolkien makes this distinction clear). Kin above king- Thorin their uncle, not mad King Thorin.
461. Bilbo joins in the battle, throwing rocks at the charging orcs.
462. Dwalin protects Bilbo on Ravenhill.
463. Bilbo is knocked unconscious by Bolg when he comes up from reaching for another rock to throw.
464. In DOS, there was a foreshadowing of Bolg knocking out Bilbo unconscious, when Bolg responded to Azog's call in Dol Guldur :
Bolg went in, pushing lightly one orc that was in the passage and who would have fallen to his death if he had been pushed away just a little bit more.
465. Bolg did the same move in Ravenhill: he hardly noticed Bilbo and simply pushed him away, which was enough to knock the Hobbit unconscious. If Bolg have been just a little bit more violent, Bilbo would have been knocked dead.
466. As Thorin stands alone fighting a hoard of orcs, Legolas begins to shoot them from a sniper's position atop a tower.
467. Legolas runs out of arrows in combat for the first (and so far only) time in Middle-earth cinema history. Nice reality of war.
468. The Troll Legolas uses to crash into the tower has prosthetic arms and legs and chains attached to the edges of his eyes and wrap around the side of its head.
469. ****The tower Legolas makes the orc knock over is hollow.
470. **Thorin loses the broken sword right before he gets Orcrist back - he stabs an orc with it and then pushes the orc over the edge of the waterfall.
471. **Thorin inadvertently saves Legolas' life when he pushes the orc over the edge. Bolg has just knocked Legolas onto his back and is moving in for the kill when the orc crashes through the tower, making the stones collapse underneath him.
472. Legolas saves Thorin again by throwing Orcrist at the orc about to kill the King, but now the Elf lost one of his weapons against Bolg.
473. Legolas gives an "it figures" look just before throwing Orcrist.
474. Orcrist, the Goblin-cleaver, helped save Erebor and its King.
475. Thorin was shocked to see Orcrist appear out of nowhere. A wonderful way to have it returned to him.
476. Thorin threw a sword to save Legolas during the barrel escape, Legolas throws Orcrist to save Thorin.
477. As the orc falls over the cliff, Thorin grabs the hilt of Orcrist and pulls it out.
478. Orcrist has black blood on the blade.
479. After Legolas throws Orcrist, he draws his 2 knives to fight Bolg.
480. When Legolas fought Bolg back in DoS, he was wielding the stolen Orcrist and lost the fight. In tBotFA he only defeats Bolg after returning the sword to its rightful owner.
481. When Legolas uses Orcrist, his fighting style is markedly different to both Thorin using Orcrist and Legolas himself when he uses his knives: it's far less graceful, there's a lot of hacking and chopping, and it looks almost awkward or clumsy at times. I suspect it's supposed to look wrong in some way, since the sword isn't rightfully his.
482. Legolas loses one of his knives as he fights to stay on the fallen tower.
483. Legolas uses his last blade to kill Bolg, out-maneuvering him from the same type of standoff they had at Lake-town.
484. After Bolg falls, a monstrous boulder follows him down and crushes him.
485. Legolas rushes to the spot where Tauriel had fallen, but she's not there. He looks over the edge of the cliff to see if she fell.
To the Death
486. Azog sees the eagles first.
487. Radagast and Beorn show up to the battle on eagles.
488. The Eagles and Beorn attack the Gundabad army and bats coming in from the north - and they take them all out by themselves.
489. When Beorn and Radagast arrive with the eagles, in the distance afterward you can clearly see them decimating the Gundabad army single-handedly. The ranks break apart and fall astonishingly quickly.
490. Thorin looks down at the ice breaking up during their fight. Azog never notices.
491. ****Thorin has a comically-blank expression, slightly tips his head to one side and lightly hops backward off the ice.
492. Thorin uses his head as he fights simply. He steps off the ice and lets the floating slab tip and slip Azog into the icy water. An ignoble death -- that is, a rather un-glamorous end for a battle-hardened warrior.
493. As Azog drives his sword-arm toward Thorin's chest, the only thing stopping it is Orcrist blocking it. But Thorin, knowing he can't hold Azog's full weight off, suddenly draws Orcrist free, allowing Azog to stab him, but then Thorin stabs Azog with Orcrist.
494. Thorin has enough strength to drive Orcrist clear through and deep into the ice.
495. There’s a curiously intimate face-to-face between Thorin and Azog as the mortal enemies meet their fates.
496. When Thorin first fights Azog, it's through fire. When Thorin last fights Azog, it's through ice.
497. Bilbo wakes and looks up to see, "The eagles are coming."
498. In the book the eagles are the last thing Bilbo sees before he's knocked out, whereas in the film they're the first thing he notices *after* he regains consciousness.
499. Thorin stands at the top of the frozen falls and looks down on his kingdom and the end of the battle.
500. When Thorin kills Azog and stumbles to the edge of the waterfall to look down on the battlefield, a section of the waterfall turns black with Azog's blood running under the ice and over the falls.
501. As Thorin looks down of the battlefield, you can see the orcs flooding back into the wormholes.
Courage and Wisdom
502. Bilbo tries to stop the blood flowing from Thorin's wound, and he realizes it's beyond hope.
503. From the book, Thorin begs Bilbo's forgiveness for his words at the rampart and for putting Bilbo in peril.
504. Thorin's face gets progressively noticeably paler during his last goodbye with Bilbo.
505. Thorin calls Bilbo "Master Burglar" and begs the hobbit's forgiveness for his words and deeds on the rampart and for leading him into such peril. Bilbo said he was glad to share his perils... all off them, the good and the bad. That it's more than any Baggins deserved.
506. Thorin calls Bilbo "Master Burglar" when he's on his deathbed. In their first conversation in AUJ, Thorin says Bilbo looks more like a grocer than a burglar. In their last, Thorin finally acknowledges Bilbo's role as a burglar.
507. Thorin tells Bilbo to "go back to your books, and your armchair", which are the two things Bilbo says he misses after they escape the goblin tunnels in AUJ. He also misses his garden, similar to Thorin's "plant your trees, watch them grow"
508. Thorin smiles and finds peace with Bilbo as he encourages the Hobbit to go home. "If more people valued home above gold, the world would be a merrier place."
509. Even after Thorin drew his last breath, Bilbo still tries to get him to look at the eagles. Very excellent portrayal of the first stage of grief- denial.
510. Bilbo cries in heartbreak at Thorin's death.
511. The blood from Thorin's wound is seeping into the ice beneath him and soaking in.
512. You can see Kili’s sword lying next to him where he fell.
513. When Thranduil is searching in the passageways of Ravenhill, Legolas appears and Thranduil looks him over anxiously, obviously concerned that he has been wounded.
514. Legolas tells Thranduil he will not return. Thranduil tells him to seek out the Dúnedain and one called Strider.
515. ****Legolas' faith in his father is lost because of Thranduil's attitude... isolationism, lies, and banishment of Tauriel.
516. When Thranduil tells Legolas to seek out the Ranger called Strider, he says, "His true name you must discover for yourself" and we hear a couple of bars of the heroic Fellowship theme.
517. Thranduil sending his son out to find a promising young Dunadan talks nicely to Legolas defending Aragorn at the Council.
518. Aragorn is about 27 in The Hobbit movieverse. He says he's 87 in TTT. AUJ begins 60 years before FotR, which makes him 27 in Jackson's story... but which, in physical appearance and stature, would probably have the young northern Ranger looking more like a teenager of 17 or 18.
519. Thranduil salutes Legolas in elf-fashion of hand on heart with a slight bow. An emotional Legolas can only weakly reach back toward his father before turning away.
520. **Thranduil holds his hand over his heart and then holds it out slightly, as though he wants to embrace his son, but can't quite bring himself to do it. Legolas does something very similar
521. Tauriel cradles the fallen Kili and returns his token.
522. As Tauriel mourns for Kili and asks Thranduil why it hurts so much, the King is very emotional when he says that their love was real.
523. Legolas and Tauriel reawaken love in Thranduil.
524. Gandalf sits on the steps next to a shock-struck and mournful Bilbo.
525. ****Bilbo's nose twitches. His nose always twitches when he's dealing with something.
526. The sun is setting behind Bilbo and Gandalf as they sit on the step.
527. Gandalf cleans and picks at his pipe, not saying a word, until Bilbo takes note of him, and the friends smile at one another.
528. When the company find the fallen Thorin and Bilbo, most of them kneel on the ground and bow to their fallen king. Only Dwalin and Gloin remain standing.
529. When the Dwarves are mourning Thorin on the ice, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur, who are not Durin kin, hold back to give first place to the family mourners.
530. The sun shines down on the Dwarves where they kneel in mourning Thorin.
531. Balin crouches right next to Thorin's body and his shoulders are shaking. It's clear he's sobbing. Dwalin's close by, but the others stay back at a respectful distance. It's almost like they're allowing Balin a private moment with Thorin
532. Percy blows the horn of Dale at the end of the Battle.
533. When the horns of Dale blow three times, you clearly see several men and boys in Dale remove their hats- and they do it going right to left, as though something is passing them (maybe a hint to the funeral procession?).
534. They have laid boards on top of the broken-stone bridge.
535. Dori is tearing up when Bilbo says goodbye.
536. As Bilbo invites the Dwarves to tea, for that moment they are all in memory of their time and the comfort of Bag End. In the book, Balin and Gandalf take him up on his hospitality… though they do knock.
537. The Dwarves all bow to Bilbo the same way Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin were bowed to.
538. Bilbo is not wearing the Mithril shirt when he's leaving the Dwarves.
539. Bifur's axe is gone when the company says goodbye to Bilbo.
The Return Journey
540. As Bilbo and Gandalf ride away, it looks like there's a small chest behind Bilbo's saddle.
541. As Gandalf and Bilbo approach the Shire by horse/pony, they pass buy a farmer with 2 huge cows who watches them.
542. Gandalf has left Bilbo at the border of the Shire perhaps because he promised Beorn to stop there and return with his pony/horse.
543. When Bilbo and Gandalf part on the border of the Shire, Bilbo is carrying the helm found in his chest, a sword (not Sting that is sheathed on his left hip), a shield and the chest of treasure.
544. When Bilbo says goodbye to Gandalf he is wearing knitted half gloves that look suspiciously like Ori made them for him!
545. There's a small red gem at the top of Bilbo's pin.
546. Gandalf says, "You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all!" They're Gandalf's last word straight from the book, and our last time with Gandalf the Grey in the film.
547. ****A little of the old Bilbo appears as he blinks quickly and flusters a bit when attempting to deny he found a Ring...that is, the re-emerging Bagginsish side of him, as opposed to the brave-but-receding Tookish side.
548. The sword Bilbo takes home looks like Kili's. The hilt is sticking out of his backpack and later Frodo pulls out of the chest to look at.
549. We can now ascertain the origin of the helmet Frodo pulled from the chest in the first book-end scene: it is an Orc helmet from the Bot5A.
550. ****The chest Bilbo is carrying was Gloin and Nori's ...the 'long-term deposit' of the Troll-cave.
551. Bilbo still carries his contract and Thrór's map.
552. Bilbo has a blanket draped over his shoulders (from Lake-town) held on by a triangle-shaped pin on his left shoulder.
553. Peter Jackson is walking several paces behind Bilbo (wearing a white shirt) following him to Bag End with his head slightly down. He's clearly seen passing the hobbits carrying Bilbo's furniture and pouf.
554. The hobbit that stops to talk with Bilbo has the front hall chandelier Gandalf hits his head on sitting in the wheelbarrow.
555. Two different hobbits walk by with triangle-shaped stools.
556. Bilbo's quilts are lying open on the side of the hill.
557. Amongst the tray of items Lobelia is holding sits Bilbo’s teapot… which also appears on his table in LotR.
558. The sign announcing the Baggins Auction says: For Sale, by Auction The effects and estate of the late Mr. Bilbo Baggins, esc. 10 o'clock sharp, June the 22nd Messrs Grubb, Grubb and Burrowes Registered auctioneers
559.The two old hobbits standing in front of the Auctioneer's podium when Bilbo is showing his contract look like the 2 hobbits smoking/ playing chess before Bilbo's birthday party in FotR. [[CONFIRM]]
560.Bilbo goes to tell the auctioneer why he left Bag End, and says that it was for a job, but cannot say it was a job as a burglar.
561. When the auctioneer asks Bilbo who Thorin Oakenshield is, he stops suddenly, voice wavering, and he stammers out that he was his friend- you can clearly see the deep seated grief here.
562. Bilbo can't say to Balin what Thorin means to him, but he could say it at the doorstep of Bag End. "He was my friend."
563. Bilbo's writing desk is sitting on the porch next to the front door.
564. There is very thick dust all over Bilbo's floor along the walls where there was no traffic when his home was cleared out.
565. Most of what was left behind in Bag End are Bilbo's books... which he missed so much during his journey.
566. Even the candles have been taken from the wall.
567. There are black soot marks still on the walls above where the candles used to be mounted.
568. **That crack in the floor near the front door, where the Ring will fall one day: NOT there *yet*, when Bilbo first comes home.
569. As Bilbo wanders through Bag End, he's still wearing the same clothes he had on when he ran out the door over a year before.
570. The vest Bilbo is wearing is still missing all of the buttons except for the second from the top.
571. The handkerchief Bilbo left behind was on the floor.
572. Bilbo's handkerchief has his initials (BB) sewn on it.
573. The wood floor of Bag End had a herring-bone pattern.
574. When Bilbo picks up Belladonna's portrait from the floor, he immediately puts us in mind of the 'Took side' of Bilbo's family, which is what made him able to go on this adventure in the first place. It's fitting to have him remind us of her at the end of the story.
575. The pictures over the mantle are images of Fran Walsh and Peter Jackson also seen in LotR.
576. Putting the portrait back on the wall could be symbolic of his Took side being "tired"
577. When Bilbo picks up the portrait off the floor, there is a notebook right by it that looks a lot like the Red Book .
578. The jar on the mantel underneath Bilbo's parent's pictures is the same jar Dwalin is pulling a pastry out of in AUJ and sets down when Balin comes in.
579. After Bilbo straightens his parents' pictures, he absent-mindedly puts his fingers in his vest pocket and feels the Ring in the right pocket. He becomes distracted from then on and can't shake it off.
580. When Bilbo is thinking about the One Ring at Bag-end, the History of the Ring theme tries to assert itself rather unsuccessfully which mirrors Bilbo's confused thoughts about the Ring.
581. Bilbo's hand twitches as he tries to resist the Ring.
582. There's a subtle thrumming sound when old Bilbo closes his hand over the Ring.
583. There's a plate with silverware lying on top and mug other items on the table where Bilbo just had a snack.
584. One hobbit passes Bilbo with a triangle-shaped stool, and there's another one just like it near the door. Later, when Bilbo gets up from the table to greet Gandalf, he passes by the same type of stool on the floor against the wall.
585. The map of the Lonely Mountain at the end (with old Bilbo) is faded, whereas when Thorin received it in Bag End, it was nice and crisp as far as the ink goes.
586. When Bilbo goes to open the door for Gandalf, you can see one of the triangle stools against the wall.
587. The Hobbit films open with Bilbo and Frodo at Bag End the morning of the Party. It closes with Gandalf arriving at Bag End for the Party. All of The Hobbit films occur within the day of Bilbo's 111th Birthday.
588. There are two book-end scenes: Gandalf and Bilbo at Bag End though Frodo only appears in the one at the start of the tale and Gandalf and Bilbo at the door of Bag End when Gandalf arrives.
589. We only hear Gandalf in the last scene; he doesn't appear.
590. Bilbo is the first person we hear speak in the trilogy ("My dear Frodo..."), as well as the last ("Welcome, welcome!").
591. Father and Son Theme:
· Bard and Bain work together to kill Smaug.
· Thranduil and Legolas, at first opposed, end by coming to a sort of understanding.
Credits
592. Credit sketches during the closing credits cover all 3 films... ending with a hobbit hole.
593. The Credits song is "The Last Goodbye" performed by Billy Boyd. Billy collaborated with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens in writing the song. It's a farewell to these films, but also a farewell by Peter Jackson to all the fans... a closing tribute to our journey together through Tolkien's Middle-earth.
594. The Credit Sketch of Bilbo is taken from the picture of Martin Freeman holding up his Lego character!
595. When Richard Armitage's name and the sketch of Thorin appear, the sketch in the background appears to be concept art of Erebor. However it shows two dwarves statues facing each other, holding a plinth, and on the plinth are three rectangular boxes. I'm thinking this is perhaps concept art of Thorin, Fili and Kili's coffins?

· Dan Hennah (Production Designer) is a Lake-town refugee. Alfrid cuts him off and he stops short and stands there for a second.

Had the fabulous privilege of seeing BoFA with a dear friend the other day, and wanted to add (someplace in the 60's?) ...
...that while Smaug's own glow goes out the superheated metal of the arrow shaft end remains red-hot as he falls.
(I suppose his inner temperatures heated the metal to red-hot, which will cool as he lies in the lake.)

Well done, Gramma! Thanks for all the time and effort you put into compiling these. They enrich my viewings of the films and I'll look forward to the BotFA dvd with this one close at hand :)
My one comment this time round is re: 598 - I think I was wrong about seeing Billy Boyd on the edge of the lake before they try to hang Alfrid - I watched it again and there's just someone there who bears a passing resemblance to him if you don't look directly at his face ;)

Its the only intimation of Elrond and his father we ever see - I love them in the same scene.  I'm just not sure how to phrase it.
