I confess that I may be mispronouncing "Erech" ? I'm pronouncing it "Air reach" or "Er reach" - with a long last E. If a more popular pronounciation is "Er wretch" a.s. wins with "Wreck Erech" If so, apologies - I'll give all my answers tomorrow.

I am no Tolkien language scholar. But the way I hear it in my head, Erech rhymes with "wreck" Can't wait to find out what you had in mind though! a.s.

Do any of his languages pronounce 'ch' as 'ck' ? And is the consensus of 'Erech' "Er wretch" or "Er wreck" ? Philologists, HELP!

Rhyme Time – Quiz II - The Answers - To ALL
[In reply to]

(Note on #10. When I read first LOTR about 46 years ago I pronounced Erech ‘Er eech’ (in my head). After several dozen readings this pronunciation was ingrained (even though I soon knew it was wrong after reading the appendix, as has been brought back to my attention by A.S. et al). As Tolkien tells us in Appendix E, CH is only used to represent the sound heard in bach (in german or Welsh)…, and the ‘E’ should be pronounced as in ‘were’. Thus it seems “Er wreck” or “Air wreck” is closer to the mark, though possibly not in the money(?), and apologies to those who worked hard to solve this one.) Bunches of thanks to all those who played. I hope it was fun. 1. Where wolves are taken for a necropsy *** A warg morgue 2. A lone land depression *** A single dingle 3. A Drúedan proboscis *** A Wose nose 4. A scorched descendant of Girion *** A charred Bard 5. It’s raining on the talan *** A wet flet 6. A fair-haired siege engine *** A blonde Grond 7. “Get lost, Gamgee!” *** “Scram Sam!” 8. A street named after the Master of Shire-moot *** Thain Lane 9. A dull-witted Baggins *** Dodo Frodo 10. Overcome the Rock *** Breach Erech 11. Kingdoms of Hammerhand *** Helm’s realms 12. An Esgaroth biscuit getaway *** A cram lam (or scram) 13. A playground in Eastfold *** A Mark park 14. Legend of an Erebor city *** A Dale tale 15. Jack of all trades and mill owner *** Handyman Sandyman

I thought this was going to be a pronunciation thing and was trying to second-guess how you might be pronouncing any Tolkien stone, hill or rock to make it rhyme with vanquish, or beat, or defeat, or overwhelm, or recover.... Unfortunately, none of 'em did! A phrase springs to mind about barking, tree and wrong....

That was a good quiz. For someone who pronounced Cirith and Celeborn as though they started with the letter S for many readings prior to ever reading the Appendices or hearing them pronounced correctly, I can relate to the whole Erech problem. a.s.

on the ‘S’ with Cirith; Celeborn; Cirdan Celebrian etc. But these are Sindarin. Kirith; Keleborn; Kirdan; Kelebrian, and just don’t have as pleasant of a sound to me. Then there are occasional words with the ‘s’ sound such as Citadel. But if seems most words starting with ‘c’ like Causeway or Caverns have the ‘k’ sound. It bebothers and befuddles the mind; I still can’t get Seleborn or Sirdan, or Sirith out of my head!!

That was a fun round, a well thought out game as always. for #2 I was thinking hole as in Hobbit hole and stopped there, but I should have kept brainstorming for something more explicitly Tolkienian. #10 had me utterly stumped. Well done!
*** He was born of mortal frailty mixed with Elven fallen realm, Comin’ home to a land he’d never been before. Arvernian behind him, sailed the seas of Middle-earth, You might say he didn’t know what lay in store. When his wife came out to find him she'd been turned into a bird, Upon her breast there shone a shining star, So he took her to his bosom, and by morn her form returned, And he shifted West to find the high Valar. And in Valinor he went before the high, In doing so, resigned himself to die. Take up arms against the Shadow, asked he of the high, of the Valar high. (Fight, fight the Shadow) of the Valar high.
