The original thread has fallen to the second page. Here's how we stand for the next phase of our Lord of the Rings discussion. The four chapter discussions in boldface need leaders: 4/7 – Departure of Boromir – Finding Frodo 4/14 - Riders of Rohan - N.E. for The Stairs of Cirith Ungol. I'll take it if no one else does.

I just had to answer you that way. And I'll be very glad to follow your leading - although I'm afraid I won't participate much during the week, and in Milady's discussions not at all (bye bye, 'The Uruk-hai'!)

I'll keep you in mind, should no one else decide they want to dicuss Frodo's second encounter with the Witch-king, and Sam's great book with red and black letters.

. . . and joining in a couple of times, so I'd be happy to help out, but could you give me a layout of what exactly is to be done when leading a chapter?

It's up to each discussion leader.

Basically, you do whatever you like. Some leaders take quite a scholarly approach, others take a thematic one, some ask very few questions and prod people to develop their own sub-threads while others delve into a chapter with a lot of questions. I've seen some bring their own expertise to the discussion (such as their studies in old languages, or ancient architecture) which have been fascinating to follow. Really, just follow your muse - and have fun with it!

Milady, who's also leading next week's discussion of "The Breaking of the Fellowship", had to pull out of the later chapter, so we need a volunteer to discuss the machinations of Uglúk and Grishnákh next month.

Sorry again about Uruk-Hai. I signed up for that one without a calendar around, so I didn't realize I would be occupied. Nothing seems to be going on that later week, so I'll try discussing the Glittering Caves and the reunion with Merry and Pippin.
Has anyone ever wondered what would have happened if Smaug had ate Bilbo, and therefore the ring? It would be interesting to see Sauron send orcs to go diving for the Ring.

Don't worry about dropping "The Uruk-hai" -- you gave us plenty of notice. And I look forward to your discussions next week and then again at the end of May!

As Ataahua says, you can organize your week pretty much any way you want. For ideas, you can skim through the past several months on the board, to see how others have arranged their discussions. The minimum requirements is that you post one or two threads a day, Monday to Friday, in which you ask questions about your chapter -- and I recommend asking questions that interest you. It's also encouraged that your last thread be an "open discussion", so that other people can ask their own questions. Sometimes discussion leaders also add a summary thread at the end. I look forward to your discussion!
