The most....... Can't Post

Now we've seen (almost) the whole trilogy, and we're in awards season anyway, here's a chance to hand out some awards to individual scenes, moments or images from across the three films that stick in the mind....

So, please step up to the plate and hand out your nominations for the scenes you found:

Most memorable

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't)

Most appealing visually

Most puzzling

Most amusing

Most like the book

Most unlike the book

Most unexpected

Most imaginative

That's ten. Feel free to pick and choose or nominate all ten, and give reasons if you want to.....

Great thread! [In reply to] Can't Post

Here are my answers to most of the questions:

Most memorable

This is hard, but I would have to say the first shot of the Shire in AUJ. It was my first ever Middle Earth movie, though I had just read the books, and I couldn't believe I was seeing the Shire!

Most moving

Definitely Thorin's death. I can make myself cry even thinking about it, but his last words to Bilbo were beautiful.

Another moving moment to me was Bilbo's mercy to Gollum.

Most missed

The enchanted fires in Mirkwood.

Most appealing visually

I have to agree with Black Fox- the eagles flying and then the whole scene on the Carrock amidst the sunrise.

Most amusing

The dwarves at Bilbo's house - particularly Bofur's "oh, that would be a reference to Smaug..." Something about his delivery cracks me up every time. Laugh

Most like the book

Riddles in the Dark or Bilbo's conversation with Smaug.

Most imaginative

The design of the Stone Giants was pretty imaginative.

Thanks dormouse, this is fun. :-) [In reply to] Can't Post

Most memorable

Can I pick a scene from each movie?
AUJ - Riddles in the Dark
DOS - Flies and Spiders (sorry dormouse, I love the scene)
BO5A - Apart from all the bad things I remember ... Gandalf and Bilbo after the battle sat in (almost) silence. Very moving.

Most moving

I still get goosebumps when the eagles rescue the Dwarves in An Unexpected Journey. If we are going for tears then it would have to be Balin and Thorin entering Erebor in The Desolation of Smaug or when Bilbo is back in is Hobbit-hole in The Battle of the Five Armies. The last 5/10 minutes of BO5A (after Thorin is dead) are pretty moving.

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't)

As some might have guessed from my recent thread in the Pollantir, I do not understand why the charm and the whimsy fairty-tale elements of the book (which would have been just as visually and physically comical/entertaining) were replaced with over-the-top, nonsensical, and frankly embarrassing visual and physical humour ... I'm looking at you Alfrid, the kamikaze Trolls and Legolas.

Give me the Talking Purse over Alfrid any day.

Most appealing visually

The one that sticks out for me is Mackenzie Country and the lupin fields which appear in The Desolation of Smaug. Beautiful. And the eagles flying over the Misty Mountains.

Most puzzling

The inclusion of Azog. It doesn't make any sense at all to have Bolg and Azog. It confuses the storyline. Saying that, I do like Azog. I have always been an advocate for Azog's CGI; it is splendid.

There are other things that puzzle me (has anyone explained why Elrond, Galadriel and Gandalf turned up at Sauron's gaff with the Three Elven Rings yet?), but that certainly is the most puzzling addition.

Most amusing

An Unexpected Party. It tends to go downhill after that ...

Most like the book

The movies do very well at keeping close to the books. Riddles in the Dark is the obvious contender, as is the "Good Morning" conversation.

Most unlike the book

The Battle of the Five Armies (the movie and scene). Tolkien went for brevity in the battle details, but at least explained the outcome of the story. PJ and co. went the opposite way round and forgot to explain the outcome of the story while beefing up the battle.

Most unexpected

The prologue to An Unexpected Journey. I could watch it over and over again.

(Or my lack of interest in BO5A. But I want to remain positive for you dormouse Smile)

Most imaginative

Barrels out of Bond. It certainly takes an imagination to dream that up, and bring it to screen. A lot of hard work went into it - everything from the surrounding environment to the water molecules in the river. It is imaginative. It just doesn't work for me.

Good one! [In reply to] Can't Post

Most moving
Everything that Balin says ever, especially when he's telling Bilbo about gold sickness

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't)
I really wanted to see Gandalf sitting with green rings of smoke above his head looking "wizardly". And Thorin's funeral.

Most appealing visually
The return journey of Bilbo and Gandalf. Despite it's short length I love it more than many things. Everything about it looks real and Middle Earth-y

Most puzzling
Beorn's hair

Most amusing
To this day I don't know if it was meant to be funny or exciting or both, but Legolas shooting arrows while balancing on Dwarf heads had me in tears. I was surprised that nothing in BOTFA topped it in terms of sheer lunacy.

Most like the book
Riddles in the dark is pretty amazing. And Martin Freeman as Bilbo was an inspired decision.

Most unlike the book
Azog as a character never felt right to me in any context.

Most unexpected
Bilbo's confusion after the barrels were released

Most imaginative
Don't know why this sticks out to me, but using Bilbo's fading blue sword to show to show that Gollum had finally killed the Goblin was simple and ingenious.

Most memorable:

Quite a few – perhaps Smaug and Laketown in BoFA. Cheating: Eagles in AUJ; Thorin in gold hall.

Most moving:

Thorin and Bilbo in BoFA.

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't):

Beorn, Beorn, Beorn.

Most appealing visually:

Ever so difficult to choose. So many beautiful scenes.

Most amusing:

At the end of the film, on the borders of the Shire, when Gandalf was parting from Bilbo, the way the horses changed position three times (in one shot they disappeared entirely).

Most like the book:

Bilbo.

Most unlike the book:

Dol Guldur. DoS and BoFA. Also Tauriel and Legolas.

Most unexpected:

The brilliant acting and characterisation of Thorin and Bilbo. (Especially BoFA; also AUJ.)

Most imaginative:

Thorin and the golden hall. The way the bell was used, as a kind of pealing door heralding the emergence of the Dwarves. Both BoFA.

Sly

P.S. I reserve the right to change my mind about some these at a future date.Wink

Ooh ooh! [In reply to] Can't Post

I love threads like this! Laugh BotFA is still fresh in my mind so these might change in the coming months, but for now these are my answers, and without having read anyone else's.

Most memorable
An unexpected party

Most moving
Bilbo crying after Thorin's death, followed by his verge-of-tears speech to the Dwarves as he's leaving.

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't)
I don't know actually. Maybe Balin coming to tea, maybe the Wood Elves' feasts.

Most appealing visually
*coughThranduilcough* Probably the Eagles' flight at the end of the first film :p

Most puzzling
Nothing springs to mind. I might have an answer after reading what others say!

Most amusing
Bilbo's nope-faint, then his crouch as Smaug is waking up, then his 'yessss' when Thranduil realises who he is. Martin Freeman is outstanding at the little things.

Most like the book
The unexpected party

Most unlike the book
Hmm..I'm going to say Thorin standing on Smaug's snout.

Most unexpected
Elves jumping into battle! I loved it so much, and wasn't prepared for it at all!

Most imaginative
I guess the barrels, they really had fun with how they decided to play it out.

My thoughts [In reply to] Can't Post

Most memorable

Riddles in the Dark. Though I could pick a few others as well.

Most moving

A couple for me from BOFTA I'll go with. Bilbo and Thorin talking about the Acorn. I also really love Bilbo's goodbye to the Dwarves at the end.

Honestly though there are 1-2 from each movie. I'm going BOFTA with this one.

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't)

Thorin's funereal.

Most appealing visually

Seeing Hobbiton in AUJ. I've gotten the chance to meet the man who runs it and someday I'd love to see it up close.

Most puzzling

Why the need for stuff like the belching or bird poop. A close second is the "love story" getting too heavy handed in film three.

Most amusing

The whole unexpected party.

Most like the book

A good part of AUJ as a whole.

Most unlike the book

The love story.

Most unexpected

How good Bilbos conversations with Gollum and Smaug were.

Most imaginative

I love Smaug's death with the light in his eyes going out.

Most appealing visually

AUJ Eagles
DOS Smaug
BOFA Smaug Bard

Most puzzling

Why no was made attempt to finish plot lines in BOFA T E

Most amusing

Most memorable

AUJ, Bilbo choosing not to kill Gollum.

Most moving

Thorin's death scene.

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't)

Funeral scene details of Thranduil and Bard presenting the deceased Thorin with Orcrist and the Arkenstone. Not in the sense that the lack affected my enjoyment of Bo5A, but in the sense that if I had listed pre-Bo5A scenes I looked forward to seeing, this one would have been on the list. No other scene on my personal lists failed to make it in to the TEs.

Most appealing visually

Oh, that one is easy. Smaug, spinning in the air and shedding a rain of molten gold. (DoS).

Most puzzling

Hmm. No nominee, will have to see what others picked for some ideas.

Most amusing

Bilbo in Thranduil's wine cellar, recognizing the flaw in his escape plan.

Most like the book

Good morning.

Most unlike the book

The climactic scenes of DoS. (Mostly in a good way).

Most unexpected "Into the Fire" through to the end of AUJ.

Most imaginative Stone Giants!

Most memorable
I'd have to go with the "Misty Mountains" song in the first film. Gave me chills in the trailer and in the film!

Most moving
The music in the "Feast of Starlight" scene in DOS with Tauriel. That music is some of THE most moving music in all six films, in my opinion.

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't)
Hmm. Probably Thorin's funeral and a proper epilogue to BOFA with Bard, Dain, etc.

Most appealing visually
Smaug in his lair. Also, Rivendell is always glorious!

Most puzzling
Old Bilbo's hair. How difficult would it have been to make it match the hair in LOTR?

Most amusing
I really liked the Extended Cut of the dwarves meeting Beorn.

Most like the book

The TORnies! (or would that be the Kimmies?) [In reply to] Can't Post

Most memorable: Misty Mountains Cold (AUJ). The first teaser trailer had me at the moment this started, and it's been my most re-watched scene over the last 2 years.

Most moving: Thorin's death.
First runner up: Thorin entering the secret door and remembering his home (DOS). Beautifully played by Richard Armitage.

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't): Thorin's funeral (although this was more of an expectation than a hope).

Most appealing visually: I don't know that I can pick just one, I just love the visuals from these movies. They're all so beautifully shot, it's a total visual feast. I'll go with one from each movie:
  • The White Council (AUJ): absolutely beautiful setting and lighting - I always find it mesmerizing.
  • Thorin v. Thranduil (DOS): I was watching this last night and was really struck by the beauty of the Woodland Realm, for some reason it never really had as much of an impact on me before. Probably because I was fixated on the beauty of the participants in the scene. Wink
  • Thorin v. Azog (BOFA): the setting on the ice really made it unique
  • First runner up: every other scene with Thorin

Most puzzling: what happened to the dwarves at the end? (BOFA)

Most amusing: Bombur's barrel ride! (DOS)

Most like the book: Riddles in the Dark (AUJ). Practically perfect in every way.

Most unlike the book: Dwarves v. Smaug (DOS). I liked the fact that they fought instead of hiding away.

Most unexpected: Acorn scene (DOS). This scene was out of the blue, so unexpected yet so perfect. Such a small gem with such a big impact.
First runner up: finding the dead dwarves in the western guardroom (DOS).

Most imaginative: the forges scene and creation of the golden statue (DOS). That involved some major choreography and plotting out.

Thanks dormouse! Just so many great moments in these movies!

Most moving: Bilbo taking leave of the Dwarves
Most missed: the fairytale parts, as DanielLB said.
Most appealing visually... ... ... ... Smaug's attack on Lake-town
Most puzzling: use of "wereworms"
Most amusing: Blunt the Knives song - and "If Baggins loses, we eats it whole!"
Most like the book: Riddles in the Dark
Most unlike the book: There's so much that's just added, rather than changed, that this is a hard question. I'll just say the spider sequence in DOS.
Most unexpected: Gollum saying he had nine teeth instead of six (grr Tongue)

My response [In reply to] Can't Post

Most memorable
The entire climax of AUJ, the battle with Azog through the eagles sequence, which was just perfect and as good as anything in the LOTR movies.
Most moving

Thorin's Death

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't)

Thorin's funeral. No excuse that this was not part of the theatrical cut and it better be in the extended cut!Mad
Most appealing visually
Eagle sequence at the end of AUJ

Most puzzling

A way too goofy Radagast and his horrible bunny sled. More Narnia then Middle Earth.
Most amusing
Entire dwarf arrival sequence in AUJ

Most like the book

Riddles In The Dark
Most unlike the book

The battle in BOTFA. And a good thing too. WAY TOO SHORT in the book. It needed to be expanded and it was great in the movie. I hope there is even more of it in the extended cut, especially the extra violence that PJ had to cut out to get the PG-13 rating.
Most unexpected

How brilliant movie Thorin would be. I liked him in the book, but Richard Armitage just nailed it in the movie, especially his all out King Lear moments in BOTFA.

Most imaginative
The design of Smaug, which was just perfect

O.K. : [In reply to] Can't Post

Most Memorable: Thorin faces his worst fear and challenges Azog head-on at the end of AUJ.

Most Moving: The Dwarfs song after the Unexpected Party at Bilbo's, as Bilbo and Gandalf listen from different rooms.

Most Missed: Beorn tearing orcs to pieces and then delivering Thorin's broken body to the mountain so it is not desecrated by orcs.

Most appealing visually: The Eagles rescue Thorin and Co. and deliver them to safety.

Most Puzzling: Why no battle winner was indicated at the end of BO5A.

Most Amusing: The Dwarves dinner clean-up song at the Unexpected Party.

Most Like the Book: Riddles in the Dark.

Most Unlike the Book: The death of Thorin, Fili and Kili

Most Unexpected: Dwarf songs were included in AUJ.

Most Imaginative: The Thorin facing Azog / Eagle sequence at the end of AUJ.

Who Sir? Me Sir? *Looks innocent* [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh OK - I was just trying not to plant subliminal ideas... Angelic But here you go:

Most memorable
Almost impossible because there are so many, but I think it has to be Bilbo's first meeting with Smaug.
(Or the destruction of Laketown. Or 'Misty Mountains')

Most moving
The whole of Thorin's death scene, including Bilbo and Gandalf sitting together afterwards

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't)
The Elvenking at Thorin's funeral

Most appealing visually
Oh crumbs, I can't choose one... The sparks flying from Bilbo's chimney-Smaug admiring the golden statue-the golden rain falling from Smaug as he flew (If I say them quickly they're all one, aren't they? Angelic But then there's the interior of Thranduil's realm, and the Eagles in AUJ, and..... *ducks back into teapot, confused*

Most puzzling
Hmmm.... probably the necklace, because it needed the tie-in book to explain it

Most amusing
"Is he a great wizard, or is he more like you?"; "It's a small town, Alfrid, eveyone knows where everyone lives", "I don't think they'd ask you to stand, Sire".. and so on. There's an unobtrusively funny thread running right through the script. Oh - that, and Bombur - both the barrel, and escaping the Bear

Most like the book
Riddles in the dark

Most unlike the book
The orc hunt that begins early in the story and ratchets up the sense of danger

Most unexpected
Feast of Starlight - not Tolkien and yet so very Tolkien

Most imaginative

Bain as an improvised crossbow. "Look at me" - so powerful, that scene.

OK, Voronwe - over to you! Wink

My list & nomination for "dumbest scene" [In reply to] Can't Post

Most memorable - Thorin singing in Bag End

Most moving - Thorin's death scene

Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't) - Thorin's funeral, among others

Most appealing visually - Smaug attacking Laketown

Most puzzling - The whole "kill the dragon with molten gold" scene

Most amusing - Bombur's bouncing barrel

Most like the book - probably the "Blunt the knives" song

Most unlike the book - this one is tough. It's not just Tauriel, it's leaving 4 dwarves behind in Laketown

Most unexpected - Dwalin confronting Thorin - last dwarf I would have thought would do that

Most imaginative - probably the battle rams, now if only we'd actually SEEN them!

And now for the dumbest scene - Legolas running up a collapsing building. I mean, COME ON! Even I can't suspend my disbelief on that oneFrown

Why yes, I DO look like Anna Friel!
